WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Sidwell is a private Quaker school with a campus in northwest Washington for grades 5-12 and another in suburban Bethesda, Md., for kindergarten through fourth grade. Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second grade, suggesting that the girls would attend schools at different locations.

Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Sidwell and another elite private school, Georgetown Day, earlier this week. The soon-to-be first lady visited both schools last week, without her daughters.

Lelyveld said that while public schools were considered, the Obamas felt that a private school was in the best interest of their children. The two girls currently attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Michelle Obama is on the board.

Michelle Obama went to public schools on Chicago's South Side, and understands the importance of strong public schools, Lelyveld said, and the administration plans to work hard on that issue.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, went to a public school, but Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton chose Sidwell for Chelsea. Hillary Clinton later said she received "unfortunately, good advice" that the press would bother Chelsea if she attended public school.

Sidwell Friends has already proven protective of the Obamas' privacy, refusing earlier this week to say whether the girls had visited the school after a motorcade was seen outside.

Messages left with school administrators on Friday were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bruce Stewart, Sidwell's head of school, said he was not home. But she said the school would not release a statement before Monday.

Al Gore III, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, also attended Sidwell, where tuition is $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 at the middle and upper schools.

The quality of the school and its extra security make Sidwell Friends a good choice, said Letitia Baldrige, who was Jackie Kennedy's social secretary and chief of staff during the Kennedy administration. Caroline Kennedy attended first grade in a makeshift third-floor classroom inside the White House.

"The children are under enormous pressure from the press and their fellow students and especially the mommies of their fellow students," who are eager for their children to attend sleepovers, Baldrige said.

"I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy."

Rob Lippincott, a member of the board of trustees at Sidwell, where his daughter is a high school senior, said he could not confirm whether the Obama girls had chosen the school. But he said if so, students and parents will be excited.

"We're obviously delighted if that is the case. I have not heard anything officially," said Lippincott, senior vice president for education at PBS. "I'm certainly aware they came and visited. From everything I understand, they'd be a great addition to the school."

I don't know the answer-Did they go to public school in Chicago?

my dear, no, they didn't. As has been posted several times on this thread and others, they have been going to the Lab School (run by the University of Chicago, I think), a private, progressive school.

As a staff member at U of C, Michelle Obama also gets/got reduced tuition at the Lab School. I knew people who taught there. You would be NUTS not to take the opportunity.

At the end of the day school choice is belongs to the parents. The parent decided. I respect it. Lets wish them the best and move on

Oh please. I grew up with friends who went to Sidwell. I have adult friends who sent their children there. You don't have to be rich. Sidwell gives out many scholarships for those families who can't afford the school. Also, FYI any THINKING person wants the best education for their children. The schools in DC need a lot of work. If I had a choice, I wouldn't send my kids to DC schools, either. I attended DC public schools back in the 60's. Then the schools were much better.

Also, why don't you stop with the negative BS? Or are you the tr0// that you appear to be?

My parents were far from rich but they sacrificed and worked hard to send all five of their children to Catholic schools.

Perhaps your parents should have insisted you stay in school.

Obama opposes school choice. He says it weakens public education. He says this while he exercises that choice, sending his girls to private school.

Last year the D.C. public school system spent an average of $13,500 per child, the third-highest per-pupil allotment in the nation. Yet its national test scores remained at the bottom. If parents could take half of that $13,500 and spend it at a private school, everyone would win. More kids would get educated, and the school system would be left with more money to spend on reform.

But Obama remains steadfastly opposed. As he has said, he "owes" his political career to unions. Keeping another generation of inner-city kids locked in the grip of teachers unions is how he intends to repay them. Just as long as his own kids are not among this next lost generation, that is.

The kids in DC would not be saved by private schools. They would have the same parents and the myriad of social problems that contribute to a culture that does not cherish education.

Grow up!

The safety of his children has to be one of the first considerations and this
Quaker school can offer what others can't in this regard.

Obama will help to bring about good changes in our educational system.
Also do you know anything about private schools? Do you really think there is
room for all school age children?

Meanwhile what are you doing to bring about changes in your own
state's educational system?

You may want to do a little more reading before you hang that association on Quakers. Quakers are well known as pacifists. Nixon, obviously, not so much.

The only plan to fix public school system is to throw more money down the hole. No merit pay for good teachers and no getting rid of bad teachers. Kick ACLU out of schools-let teachers teach with discipline. Students with poor attitudes are gone-why do they get to hurt other students education. If teachers are professionals-no unions are needed. Vouchers follow student-to another public school or private school. Good riddance bad schools!

I like the appropriateness of this, since the Quakers were abolitionists.

Why is it being announced nationally what school the girls will attend?? That is a huge security issue the Obamas just created for themselves. Maybe I just don't understand but if I were President, I wouldn't make a public announcement about what school my children are attending.

Duh! No.

The Obamas didn't "create" a security issue for themselves by this announcement.
Security has always been a concern which is one of the reasons why this school
was chosen.

In case you haven't been following the news, the press has been following this
topic for weeks. The news was going to be made public at some point.

You have to ignore these people. I believe that every decision Obama makes will be ridiculed. The bottomline is security. As someone mention previously, the Obama's has received numerous death threats, more so than any other President. I am strong supporter of public schools, but if I were in the Obama's position there wouldn't be any second thoughts to enrolling my kids in a private school for their safety. To you individuals who believe it is necessary to object to the Obama's choice of school, you should put yourself in their shoes and think about what is best for your children. I'm really getting sick of these people not thinking objectively, it is getting to the point where it is not funny anymore, it is scary that we have that many people in the U.S. who are totally ignorant. They are so subjective to the right-wing garbage; it reminds of that movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers

I have always put my children first and that is why I do not want to send them to Government School. Let me keep my money and send my kids to the school of my choice.

No one should expect the Obamas to use their children to make a statement about the public schools. You can make a statement without USING your children or putting them in jeopardy.

"the Obama's has received numerous death threats, more so than any other President."

That's reason enough to put your kids at a school with a world class security team and world class academic standing.

Absolutely. As a former public school teacher and the child of public school teachers, I know that a public school would never be able to provide the privacy and security of a private school. Their decision is not an indictment on public education, unions or teachers. This is simply a question of practicality.

This is a good choice. I went to high school in the Georgetown part of DC, and some students from Sidwell Friends took afternoon arts classes at my school.

Sidwell Friends makes sense. Why? Threats against presidents make it unlikely that children of any president will ever attend a public school. Yes, President Carter's daughter attended a public school. But so much has happened in the world since then: World Trade Center bombing; Septmeber 11th; etc. And let's not forget, the daily threats against Obama, a black president, are certainly more intense and more numerous. So in this context, its not surprising that Malia and Sasha will be attending an elite private school with its own elite security team.

Folks seem so eager, so gleefully ready to attack Obama that they're not using your head on this one.

No, he's not sending his kids to a public school, but, he is on board with DC Mayor Fenty's ambitious effort to improve that city's public school system.

The Quaker philosophy should fit very well with the Obama's beliefs in service, education, modesty, etc.

It's also important that they already will have friends there in the Biden girls.

I'm especially glad about the security. Just curious though...I wonder how integrated Sidwell is?

it's at least 35% children of color, have seen 40% . Most Quaker schools work hard to be diverse (I work at one - great faculty, wonderful kids, parents from the most amazingly diverse backgrounds)

Do as I say, not as I do. How about letting me keep my money and send my kids to the school of my choice instead of the government telling me where I must send my kids. Progressive my ass!

Folks,

Bottom line that can end this thread once and for all ....

As long as Barack Obama helps fix the asinine education system we have in this country for the betterment of all people, I could give two s-h-i-t-s where he sends his kids to school.

I will be more pissed if Obama slacks on improving our education system BECAUSE his kids are in private school and he doesn't care.

Government screws up everything they touch-but we trust them to educate our kids. How about some competition from the private sector-government vouchers follow the student. Try it-it might work. But Libs say it can't work,so we can't try it. Talk about being openminded!

"Will taxpayers be paying the school bills or the Obamas?"

Umm...don't taxpayers pay for public schools? Seems like the Obamas will pay for their childrens' schools with the money he earns as president...similar to how he used money earned from his job as a Senator to pay for their schooling in IL.

Since when can't a person help public schools while sending their kids to private schools? That's like saying people with money can't help people without money because they aren't in the same income bracket.

I'm at a loss with your logic. If you live in a district, you pay taxes that go to public schools whether you have kids who go to the public schools or not. The Obama's will be paying for the daughter's education while the taxes they pay will go toward the public schools.
