Sidwell Friends School in northwest Washington,Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008. Michelle Obama and her daughters Sasha and Malia visited their top choices for schools "to make sure we find the right fit." WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama and his wife have chosen Sidwell Friends School for their two daughters, opting for a private institution that another White House child, Chelsea Clinton, attended a decade ago.

"A number of great schools were considered," said Katie McCormick Lelyveld, a spokeswoman for Michelle Obama. "In the end, the Obamas selected the school that was the best fit for what their daughters need right now."

She said Sidwell can provide the security and privacy that Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, will need as part of the new first family and Sidwell can help with that. She also said that Sasha and Malia had become good friends with Vice President-elect Joe Biden's grandchildren, who go to the school.

Sidwell is a private Quaker school with a campus in northwest Washington for grades 5-12 and another in suburban Bethesda, Md., for kindergarten through fourth grade. Malia is in fifth grade and Sasha is in second grade, suggesting that the girls would attend schools at different locations.

Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Sidwell and another elite private school, Georgetown Day, earlier this week. The soon-to-be first lady visited both schools last week, without her daughters.

Lelyveld said that while public schools were considered, the Obamas felt that a private school was in the best interest of their children. The two girls currently attend the private University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, where Michelle Obama is on the board.

Michelle Obama went to public schools on Chicago's South Side, and understands the importance of strong public schools, Lelyveld said, and the administration plans to work hard on that issue.

Jimmy Carter's daughter, Amy, went to a public school, but Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton chose Sidwell for Chelsea. Hillary Clinton later said she received "unfortunately, good advice" that the press would bother Chelsea if she attended public school.

Sidwell Friends has already proven protective of the Obamas' privacy, refusing earlier this week to say whether the girls had visited the school after a motorcade was seen outside.

Messages left with school administrators on Friday were not immediately returned. A woman who answered the phone at the home of Bruce Stewart, Sidwell's head of school, said he was not home. But she said the school would not release a statement before Monday.

Al Gore III, the son of former Vice President Al Gore, also attended Sidwell, where tuition is $28,442 at the lower school and $29,442 at the middle and upper schools.

The quality of the school and its extra security make Sidwell Friends a good choice, said Letitia Baldrige, who was Jackie Kennedy's social secretary and chief of staff during the Kennedy administration. Caroline Kennedy attended first grade in a makeshift third-floor classroom inside the White House.

"The children are under enormous pressure from the press and their fellow students and especially the mommies of their fellow students," who are eager for their children to attend sleepovers, Baldrige said.

"I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy."

Rob Lippincott, a member of the board of trustees at Sidwell, where his daughter is a high school senior, said he could not confirm whether the Obama girls had chosen the school. But he said if so, students and parents will be excited.

"We're obviously delighted if that is the case. I have not heard anything officially," said Lippincott, senior vice president for education at PBS. "I'm certainly aware they came and visited. From everything I understand, they'd be a great addition to the school."

Smart move. With the threats against Obama already flying, the extra security is needed. And that should allow the girls to spend more time LEARNING - which is what this is all about, right?

Remember the very old SNL during the Carter administration - recurring skit when Amy was in school. Hillarious! SS agents would give her test answers, pound kids who told on her, etc. It was great! Gilda Radner and Laraine Newman - the best!

I am thrilled that the Obama girls will be attending a Quaker school. The legacy of contemplation, speaking truth from insightful inspiration, and seeking peace in the world is a powerful blessing in life - let alone in the education of children of world leaders.

I only wish that all the children in the world could have such an excellent education. That is a goal that I hope the Obama girls come to yearn and work for in their own lives as they grow into adults.

I was going to comment on the peace-making aspect as well. American Friends Service Committee is responsible for bringing to the attention of the American people the magnitude of the cost of war even if the Bush administration would like us to pretend it is neat and clean and no one is harmed.

Watch for the traveling exhibit of the boots display near you. It is heart breaking it its stark realism. A pair of empty boots to signify each soldiers, airman, or marine killed.

As for the complainers...imagine for a minute how intrusive the secret service would have to be in order to provide first-family level security in the middle of a public school. It wouldn't just be the Obama's children that would be denied a normal childhood but every other child in the school as well.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:41 PM on 11/21/2008

Well, doesn't the same argument hold in a private school as well. I mean, unless the girls are home schooled and not around other children, intrusion by the secret service will happen anywhere, public or private.

The chosen school has experience, etc to make sure those girls and everyone else are safe. They know what they are doing.

Have you actually -seen- Sidwell? It's quite well suited to security enforcement.

The same cannot be said for DC public schools--or even Georgetown Day.

The Obama girls attended private schools in Chicago. Of course the girls will be in private schools in D.C. If I could afford it so would mine. You give your children the best you can afford.

I"m sure the girls could excel in public or private school. This isn't a commentary of the school system, it's a matter of security. People who think otherwise should get a life.

I currently attend a different Friends School, one where every other private school in the area is an "elite" school. The Friends' schools are the exact opposite. Money means nothing, and often times the rich kids--the one's with CEOs for fathers--dress like they are the poorest, and some of the poorest dress as if they have the most wealth. This doesn't sound elite to me. The schools preach tolerance, something that our nation badly needs right now. Good choice Barack.

They can send their kids wherever they want to. I put my son through private school in NYC because the public schools here are awful.

I send my kids to private school in NYC also, and I shudder to think that we might move in the same circles.

I have many friends who attended public NYC schools. They turned out okay.

Quaker school! Excellent choice. Best of both worlds. I am sure they give out scholarships as they value diversity and, if you have not noticing, have been one of the strongholds of protesting this Iraq war. (Quakers that is) Public school isn't even an option because of security, even though my son goes to a public school...

but this line: "I'm sure they'll both be athletically inclined and play on all the sports teams, and they'll have a lot of fun," Baldrige said. "But it won't be easy." WTF??? Profiling or what??

Do they have a history of this? That is not indicated by her words of "athletically inclined" (that would be more "we know they enjoy sports..." Geesh. At least it is someone's secretary and not the school! ARG! My son is darker than either of those kids and he HATES sports.

Remember Obama went home during the campaign and stopped in at one of the girls' soccer game?? Both parents are sports-oriented and I suspect the kids are too. Maybe Michelle asked about the sports programs when she toured.

How does this work financially? Will taxpayers be paying the school bills or the Obamas?

Obama isn't just any president. There are a lot of threats out there by people who wish him harm. I'm sure he'd rather be called an elitist any day by the neocons rather than neglect to fully protect his children at all cost. I wouldn't care what people thought as long as my children were safe.

Also, it's also about keeping them from the media which they can't do in public school. Public school is public, you can't restrict access.

I love how everyone on this site thinks that they are Sasha and Malia's parents and knows what's best for them. DC has some of the WORST public schools in the country. You didn't honestly think that they were going to attend there, did you? They have security concerns considering their father will be President. And Biden's granddaughters attend, whom they have made friends with. They attend a private school now. Stop pretending that if you could afford a private school, you would still send them to public, because most of us wouldn't.

Okay, for those of you who feel that Obama should send his girls to a public school. Ask yourself this:

If the SS told you that they had received more than 500 death threats, would you send your children to a public school when you are more than capable of sending them to a private school just to prove a point. Now, I am not a mother, but from what I hear about mothers and their broods, the answer should be obvious. To hell with trying to prove anything to the masses or the NEA, NTA, or any other agency.

Secondly, prior to Obama become our next POTUS, his children were attending private school. So, should he take them out of private school just to placate his supporters and detractors. H E L L NO! I wouldn't.

The man ran from POTUS. He did not run in order to make sacrificial lambs of his children by putting them into harm's way. There are a lot of people out there who want Obama to disappear. I live in Georgia. There are a lot of H A T E groups in our country--any of which are more than capable to bring harm to the President or his family.

So, the next time you question Obama's decisions. Ask yourself...under the same circumstances...would I send my children to a public school in a major metro area? I think your answer would be a resounding "NO."

These kids are not for making political statements. Even if PE Obama wanted to send them to a public school to make a political statement, Michelle would not permit it. She wants the best available choice for the well-being of her kids. They can afford a private school. They want to improve public schools for people who cannot afford the private schools.

It is not like the kids were going to public school in Chicago.

Barack will come out for firing bad teachers and merit pay? This would be going against the unions but Barack is above politics. I hope he does it for the kids.

My mom is a teacher and a union member. She wouldn't have gotten cost of living raises without the union.

She has worked in special ed for 20 years. The problem, she says, is not bad teachers. There are not very many bad teachers. The problem is the parents. We cannot expect a teacher to raise the children in her class. If parents don't take an active interest in their children's learning process, no teacher, no matter how good, will be able to help a troubled student.
