Most people have forgotten, but a number of years ago, the IRS foreclosed on the Mustang Ranch
for failure to pay back taxes. They put a lady IRS agent in charge until a buyer could be found.
The girls were happier, and the Ranch was making money hand over fist. Congress intervened,
in that they were embarrassed that the best run government enterprise was a whorehouse.

If a brothel fails signs which say, "Closed due to the Economy. Beat It." will be posted in addition to "Closed" & "No Trespassing" signs since the brothel will fail because far too few will be willing & able to pay the ladies enough to make trespassing profitable or fun for any body.

"Beat it." That's a pretty good pun. About the only funny thing about this exploitative industry.

Prostitution is unusual in that everyone involved in prostitution is a victim brothel keeper, pimp, prostitute, John or customer, officials from beat cop on up who ask for & take bribes, a society which tacitly or overtly tolerates or encourages prostitution. Everbody loses in this tawdry game. The illicit drug trade is also a victim rich environment. Everybody involved in that enterprise is a victim too.
A trade which involves trading on human weakness is always a no win situation.

"World's Oldest Procession"? Is that a combo word of profession and recession? Or are we talking some other sort of line of in-step humans? Or a typo no one here will ever correct?

Politically speaking, I guess you could say, prostitution has taken it in the Bush.

So what is needed is a bailout of Mustang Ranch? This is the thinking of Republican ideologists who believe in supply-side economics. There is no evidence either in economic models or in real life that supply-side economics (Adam Smith) works. In fact, it can be argued that supply-side economics helped to destroy the British empire. The problem, right now, is a lack of demand because the clients of Mustang Ranch have lost their jobs or fear a worsening of the economy, so they are hesitant to spend their money. Without good wages and a stable economy, above all, one not modeled on supply and greed, problems will only get worse for Mustang Ranch -- and by implication, the American economy. The solution is simple. Stop supply-side thinking. Start rebuilding the manufacturing base of the American economy that was gutted by free-trade (offshoring and labor arbitraging). Tax the rich who have proven to be tax dodgers, enact the revenue tariff (5 to 10%) -- and cut the military budget in half.

You would be wrong, as supply side economics does work, the problem is we only really tried it for 6 years.

I think history shows that our supply-siders have been wrong for a long time -- at least going back to 1981. Despite the optimistic belief that tax rate reductions might actually increase tax revenues since the economy would be liberated from nasty big government, GNP actually declined while, instead, the tax loophole industry benefited. Since 1981, supply-side economics, the dream of every deluded Republican, has brought the American people offshoring, outsourcing, labor arbitraging, several bubbles and a huge National Debt.

Erdgeist is right. Supply side economics killed prostitution in New York in the early '90s. Women would ply their trade and a quicky would cost about $15 to $25 dollars. Then the crack hookers came in, offering everything and for 50 cents. No prostitute with safety in mind could compete with that.
