Georgia Dem Senate Candidate Attacked On Family Safety, Even Though His Daughter Was Once Kidnapped

Martin

There is an eerie familiarity taking hold in Georgia's runoff Senate race. The same tone that defined the much lamented 2002 contest -- in which challenger Saxby Chambliss questioned the patriotism of triple-amputee, Vietnam vet Max Cleland -- is resurfacing in the current go-around.

This time, Chambliss and other Republican groups are going after Democratic challenger Jim Martin for being soft on crime and a danger to children, even though Martin's daughter was kidnapped at the age of eight and, subsequently, the Georgia Democrat introduced a wide-variety of legislation to protect families from crime.

It's a classic thread of political thought that suggests the best line of attack is to go after your opponent's character strength. And it's a meme that defined Chambliss' past run for office. In 2002, the Georgia Republican (who never served in Vietnam) was widely rebuked for running an advertisement that featured a picture of Cleland alongside one of Saddam Hussein and then Osama bin Laden.

This time around, the Chambliss campaign has put out an ad saying that the Martin was fired from a government position "after children die[d]." The reference was to Martin's 2003 resignation from the post of commissioner of the Department of Human Resources after two toddlers passed away under state supervision -- hardly the implicit involvement that the charge suggests.

But the more controversial attack comes by way of the group Freedom's Watch, which put out an ad that accuses Martin of being a danger to "your family's safety."

"You need to know, one public leader failed to look out for Georgia families: Jim Martin," goes the script. "First he actually helped block stiffer penalties for drunk drivers. And then, Martin voted against tougher sentences for domestic abuse."

Martin's campaign has been quick to push back against the line. The former General Assembly member and Vietnam vet put out an ad of his own, telling the tale of how his eight-year-old daughter, Becky, was kidnapped in 1980 while walking home from school.

"We were blessed that she got away but I never forgot the way she trembled when she faced her kidnapper in court," Martin says, directly into the camera. "That's why I fought so hard to crack down on violent crime and lockup violent criminals."

Martin's response is a good one, in that it doesn't overtly denounce the attacks being launched his way, but rather makes the case that he is the one who is serious about tackling crime -- after all, he knows from personal experience.

Whether Republicans in Georgia can win a second straight Senate race by going after their opponent's personal stories and character strengths remains to be seen. The runoff election is on December 2.

Look, there are 9,554,750 people in the State of Georgia. Of that, some 6 to 7 million are complete halfwits that will believe anything a republican tells them. Uh, Newt Gingrich is from Georgia, people! And Saxby's recent altercation with a news camera, rednecks idiots in Georgia love that stuff. It would be nice if Martin wins, but dont hold your breath. The black vote in Georgia on November 4 was abysmal and shameful. Dont look to that sect for help. And with the overwhelming population being born again religious zealots, dont look for the remaining logical voters to feel like it would even matter if they voted or not.

Pessimistic? Not really. Born and raised in south Georgia, so i know first hand what they are like. Even went to college there, and typically you'd think a university campus would be a center of higher learning and activism....LOL, not in Georgia universities by god! Just more church and republican line towing.

Martin wont win, just write Georgia off as a permanent repube state.

Not if I have anything to do about it Bluecoast. I worked my butt off volunteering for Barack and I'm volunteering for Jim Martin too. Everyone I've called is enthusiastically FOR Jim Martin. Two yrs ago you'd have thought there was no way and no hope that Barack would win the Presidency. We couldn't deliver GA for Barack, but dang it, we're taking that Senate seat!

Remember, this is a runoff election. There are a lot of voters in Georgia who voted for Chambliss the first time. He is no different now than he was in 2002, or the election of 2008. What is wrong with people, how could so many vote for a person like this?

Nothing is wrong 'with people'; this is just Americans being 'the way they are':
A veteran with amputations loses to a non-veteran for lack of patriotism, and now
another victim problem will. There's nothing wrong with America.

In a group of sad, sorry individuals in Washington, Saxby Chambliss stands out. Imagine how barren his life is. Winning an election is so important that he would resort to any tactic to win. I don't wish him ill because nothing bad I could think of would be worse than being Saby Chambliss. He must have all the mirrors in his home covered.

Is it any wonder that people detest, loathe and despise the GOP?

This is why, even though the Republicans may win some of these battles, that they will stay a minority party.

Chambliss is a do.uchebag. What he did during the campaign with Max Clelland was despicable and this is just the SSDD.

I cannot wait until this hateful bunch are voted into retirement.

Sad to say, for whatevery (great) qualifcations he may have, Georgia Dem. senate canidate does not have a very good media (TV) presence.

He needs to be able to GET ON POINT, and HIT the Democratic TALKING POINTS, one, two, three, NOW!

Minnesota Dem. congressional candidate Elwyn Ticklenberg had the same problem, even after his Republican right-wing caricature of an opponent, Michelle Bachman, triggered a ONE MILLION DOLLAR BONANZA to Ticklenberg's campaign when Demoratic voters, donors, and activists were outraged by Bachmann's calls for "investigations" into whether Democrats were patriotic Americans or not.

Hopefully there is SOMEONE in the Democratic Senate constellation (DSCC) who can get candidate Martin up to speed, but if Dem gurus can't think of anything better, see if you can get Big Ed Schultz to come down and host one of his "Town Hall Meetings" somewhere in Georgia.... !

Big Ed is of course a hunting, fishing, former "jockstrap" sports announcer who now has a successful "Liberal talk-radio" show, but more importantly, Ed is AN EXPERT on COMMUNICATING to rural, "heartland" voters just how Republicans are OBSTRUCTION to the FARM BILL, ALTERNATIVE ENERGY, health care, and so many other issues that CONCERN GEORGIA rural VOTERS GREATLY, but the exact sort of issues that the Democrat message & communication has been WEAK in the Deep South (until this election, when the Bush administration has put the entire US economy in the trash can.)

My wife and I have already voted for Jim Martin in an early vote. I got a Robo call from "Obama" today urging all of us to go and vote for Jim Martin. I wish I can go vote for Jim Martin for a second time.

I cannot stand Saxy Chambliss and his Republican party.

Thank you! I wish I could vote for Jim but I don't live in Georgia, so I have to trust that many more good people come out to do the right thing!

It is time for Martin to attack Chambliss for his COWARDICE in dodging the draft! He needs to hammer this time and again. Georgians will not take kindly to a guy who claimed a medical deferment and then got better once the shooting was over. A good ad would contrast their actual records of service to our country in wartime.

Boy, this Chambliss character is so low. That John McCain is in Georgia campaigning for him is, well, pretty telling about McCain's true colors. Sad.

This is almost as low as branding Max Cleland as being "soft" on national security and terrorism.. Will Georgians fall for this BS hypocrisy AGAIN??? Stay tuned.

Hey folks, your reputation is at stake and you now have a chance to redeem yourselves. Please don't blow it.

Not just Georgia, but TN, WV and Alabama. They look like beautiful places to visit and I'm sure that not all the people are horrible, southern hospitality is supposed to be famous, but you won't catch me spending what little money I have traveling to those parts of the country. I have some integrity left.

Hey moderator! Given that my last posting was comparable to many here and definitely not offensive or abusive, why was not posted? Is there some sort of new rule here that I have missed?

The ad about Cleland voting against Pres. Bush now backfires on Chambliss (although it doesn't matter now) because one of the biggest claims against John McCain and the reason he lost was because he voted with Bush 90% of the time.

Now the ad against Martin that claims that he is soft on criminals backfires as Martin comes forward and is forced to have to explain his stance on crime by reliving a horrible incident that involved his little girl. Chambliss continually sets himself up for this. He's got a worse campaign staff than McCain IMO.
