ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sarah Palin is juggling offers to write books, appear in films and sit on dozens of interview couches at a rate astonishing for most Hollywood stars, let alone a first-term governor.

Oprah wants her. So do Letterman and Leno.

The failed Republican vice presidential candidate crunched state budget numbers this past week in her 17th-floor office as tumbling oil prices hit Alaska's revenues. Her staff, meanwhile, fielded television requests seeking the 44-year-old Palin for late-night banter and Sunday morning Washington policy.

Agents from the William Morris Agency and elsewhere, have come knocking. There even has been an offer to host a TV show.

"Tomorrow, Governor Palin could do an interview with any news media on the planet," said her spokesman, Bill McAllister. "Tomorrow, she could probably sign any one of a dozen book deals. She could start talking to people about a documentary or a movie on her life. That's the level we are at here."

"Barbara Walters called me. George Stephanopoulos called me," McAllister said. "I've had multiple conversations with producers for Oprah, Letterman, Leno and 'The Daily Show.'"

Asked whether Winfrey was pursuing Palin for a sit-down, Michelle McIntyre, a spokeswoman for Winfrey's Chicago-based Harpo Productions Inc., said she was "unable to confirm any future plans" for the show.

Palin may have emerged from the campaign politically wounded, with questions about her preparedness for higher office and reports of an expensive wardrobe. But she has returned to Alaska with an expanded, if unofficial, title _ international celebrity.

John McCain plucked Palin out of relative obscurity in late August and put her on the national GOP ticket. Now, she has to decide how and where to spend her time, which could have implications for her political future and her bank account, with possible land mines of legal and ethical rules.

Palin is considering about 800 requests for appearances from December through 2009, with 75 percent coming from out of state. A year ago, just a sprinkle of requests came from beyond Alaska's borders. They range from invitations to speak at The Chief Executives' Club of Boston to attend a 5-year-old's birthday party, from a prayer breakfast in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to a business conference in Britain.

Michael Steele, the former Maryland lieutenant governor who wants to be the next chairman of the Republican National Committee, is seeking face time.

She has invitations to make appearances in 20 foreign countries, typically with all expenses paid, McAllister said. She has more than 200 requests for media interviews, again from around the globe.

"She has to pace herself," suggested veteran Hollywood publicist Howard Bragman. "She wants a career made in a Crock-Pot, not a microwave."

In her two months on the national stage, Palin energized the Republican base but turned off moderates and independents, according to some surveys. Flubbed answers in national television interviews raised questions about her competence. She was embarrassed by the disclosure the RNC spent at least $150,000 for designer clothing, accessories and beauty services for her and her family.

The right book or movie deal could help Palin reintroduce herself to the nation, on terms she could dictate.

While books and movie deals could be worth millions of dollars, it's not clear if Palin would be able to legally earn it. State rules say she cannot accept outside employment for compensation. But there appears to be little in the way of precedent left by former governors to judge if book deals or lucrative speaking appearances amount to "employment."

Palin has sent unmistakable signals she is open to running for president in 2012, but to advance her political ambitions she must stay in the public eye in the lower 48 states. As with any celebrity, there is the risk of overexposure. At the same time, she'll be under pressure to attend to governing her home state, which is thousands of miles from the rest of the nation.

"She has to deal with the perception that she bobbled her debut," said Claremont McKenna College political scientist John Pitney. "She needs to stay home for a while. If she wants a future in national politics, her No. 1 job is doing a good job as governor."

Just this past week, shortly after conducting a string of national TV interviews and skipping a state education conference, she was scolded by the Anchorage Daily News. "There are ... low graduation rates, plummeting North Slope oil prices, proposals to build alternative energy projects, the gas pipeline," the paper said in an editorial. "It's time for the governor to refocus on Alaska's needs."

DanNo13 - last thoughts: Lots were elected as reformers, but once in, either got on the gravy train, were marginalized or ... scared off. When you're talking hundreds of millions of dollars, well ... the Big Boys play for keeps. It wasn't so much that Alaskans "put up with it" (although there's some truth to that), but that no one ever had the cojones to actually take them on before Palin. [And once they learned that she couldn't be bought or bullied, they sort of shrugged and started negotiating like civilized people. (Rather than leave the state in a huff like people warned.)] She now has a good working relationship with the oil companies. AND their respect. They just don't own her chair.

I said I wasn't a Republican - don't blame me for the national windfalls profits tax not passing! :-) [And no, I'm not psychic, the tax might pass. But especially given the economy I'd say the chances are zilch that the government is going to give the cash to the people!]

I'm not a kool-aid drinker and am not easily fooled - too old and cynical :-) Palin is flat wrong on many things. And I have *no* problem with someone as informed as you being adverse to her. But you had to seek out that knowledge (congratulations!). You didn't find it in the national media. Backwoods

DanNo13 - I believe you ... or would if you'd said "me" instead of "us" :-) I'm relieved that you showed up in fact! I know there are some folks who have dug deep enough to understand more than the media has told them. Perhaps I said nothing that you didn't know, but I think you are giving many of your fellow posters vastly too much credit.

I could argue point by point but I'm talked out on this subject. (Although I really appreciate someone who seems intelligent and knowledgeable to debate with on this. I think you would be amazed at how many people believe ... oh, anything the press has told them! I'll bet if you ran a survey here you'd find that the large majority of people thought that Sarah said she could see Russia from her house! [For those not as skookum as Dan13, that was Tina Fey :-)] There are places in Alaska from where you can see Russia, but Palin's house isn't one of them and she never said that. That was just one of dozens, probably hundreds, of examples.)

I must quit. These "continued" posts are a pain! But drop on by. You're the sort of loyal opposition (or on many things, we probably agree!) that is fun to have around. Thanks for your response! Backwoods. http://www.alaskanwoulds.blogspot.com/

Last thoughts! [Honest :-)]

Sarah Palin is NOTHING like you believe her to be. She's exceedingly smart. She's tough as nails. She's absolutely fearless. She singlehandedly took back our state from Big Oil by tackling them head-on and winning. Lots of people going to jail because of her. Oil Boys who could buy our entire state prison system out of their checking account will be spending their retirement looking out from the inside of that prison system. Even Ted Stevens wouldn't have gotten busted but for probes she got the FBI to start!

She pushed through a windfalls profits tax on Big Oil and then, since she believed the resources belonged to the people not the government, she gave it to us. Exactly what Obama says he wants to do ... but won't. Palin already did it.

Actually she dealt more with the Dems than the Republicans on much of the "house-cleaning" [and, uh, senate-cleaning] - seems there were more Republicans on the take than Democrats :-)

She had over a 90% favorability rating in this state at one point. And she earned every point. Yet virtually every Alaskan you've heard quoted says horrible things about her. That, in itself should be enough to make any thinking person realize that the smear was on.

I''ve talked too much. (And cut a bunch at that! :-) Lots more at http://www.alaskanwoulds.blogspot.com/ . Drop on by. I'll put the coffee on.

Trust me, Backwoods, you are not telling any of us anything we don't already know.

Yes, she put through a windfall profits tax on oil. Which is what Obama and many of the Democrats have wanted to do and suggested we do. But it never gets done. Why? Because the Republicans constantly stop it! Because every time the subject gets brought up, the Repubs start screaming "Communism! Socialism!" That's what was so infuriatingly absurd about that subject during the campaign. The Republicans were harshly criticizing Obama for policies that were considered the high points of Palin's career!

(And btw, the way you phrase you comment about President Elect Obama--"Exactly what Obama says he wants to do ... but won't" begs for comment. Just how do you know he won't? Are you some sort of psychic?)

Yes, she got rid of a huge crony network in Alaska (one the citizens of your state seemed to have supported and maintained for many, many years). Then she installed her own network of cronies! Her favorability ratings dropped because her shenanigans were finally being exposed. Not because of some sort of smear campaign.

The woman is a con artist. Her only talents are selling herself. She talks in nothing more than platitudes designed to sound good. You (and many others) have fallen for it and are too damn proud to admit that you've been taken.

Yet More!
Sorry, this is too long. But listen. I'm a life-long Alaskan on the gray side of 50 but I've managed to travel much of the world and get an advanced degree in a professional field from a prestigious University. And I know more about Palin than almost anyone on here.

Let me also say that I am not, ""nor have I ever been" [:-)] a Republican. I am strongly pro-choice. I was (loudly) opposed to the war in Iraq long before "shock & awe" when it was a very lonely position. And I believe that evolution does just fine on its own without divine guidance.

Obviously we disagree on many very basic issues. But the character assassination of Palin by the punditocracy is infuriating.

It is my absolute conviction that the national media has intentionally lied to you repreatedly and continually to make Sarah Palin look like an unethical ditz. They did this, in my belief, because they could sense the power of her charisma and realized that she was the one person that could actually haul McCain across the finish line ahead of Obama ... and that scared the liberal media and east coast blogosphere silly. So they pulled out all the stops.

Cont. again :-)
And the interest in Sarah continues to build ... it didn't slacken off after the election. It exploded. And once she was out from under the thumb of the McCain camp ... suddenly she could speak more freely and doesn't seem so dumb any longer [except to those who can't see past their preconceived notions]. She has the sort of charisma that comes along only very, very rarely. Obama has it. Reagan and Kennedy had it. But even at the very top of the heap ... the U.S. Presidency ... it is a rare commodity. [I remember being in a room when Reagan walked into it ... prior to his presidency. The effect was unreal ... it was electric. The entire room suddenly pulsed with incredible energy ... and that was before most people even noticed he had walked in!] Sarah has that. You can't learn it. You can't buy it. You can't create it. You either have it or you don't.

Does that mean she'll make a good president? Absolutely not! Doesn't mean she'll make a bad one either. It is sort of agnostic about such things. But might it lead her to the position? Oh yeah. Charisma of that caliber tends to lead to power. Unfortunately, Hitler probably had it also. Power isn't always good.

I confess ... I didn't read all the comments. All "30 pages" of comments. But the gist of what I did read suggests that most of you would just like Palin to go away. [Nothing personal Berkeleyan, you were just the handiest quote: "we don't want to see her face or hear anything about her any more".] Were there even a scintilla of truth to that ... why did you read the article? Moreover, why did you take the time and trouble to comment about it?

"Please Media ... save me from myself! Don't run any more articles about Palin because I can't help but read them!" Sounds just a tad on the silly side folks. She is rock star famous! I assure you it isn't the evangelical wingnuts who are begging her to show up on Oprah and Letterman and Leno (and everywhere else). Despite what appears to be deep DEEP denial ... people can't get enough of her. But they can't admit to it! :-)

I'm running out of space. I'll have more in a minute. Backwoods - http://www.alaskanwoulds.blogspot.com/

VP John Edwards can maybe help VP Palin run for president in 4 years.

Words of advice from PRESIDENTIAL candidate John Edwards:
1. Train Palin how to have an affair and raise 30 million in campaign money
2. spend millions of campaign funds as hush money to fly LOVER around country
3. try and switch to being a democrat so as to get MEDIA PASS for fools
4. Encourage Palin to have an affair while SPOUSE IS DYING
5. have a BABY with lover and meet lover at 2:00am in hotel while holding baby
6 repeatedly lie to media about having affair
7. have LOVER tape you while you fantasize about being president

UNPROFESSIONAL: Yeah, your right, turkey video is so much worse

I'm right wing, and hate is not something I'm very fond of..... and, you can't say that "hate" only exists on the right - I very much witnessed it on the left during the campaigning as well. "Both" sides have hate, and that's unfortunate, because without love and compassion for ourselves and others, we have nothing.

Make her like Paris Hilton. Make her like Britney Spears. Marginalize her to the max.
That way she can never hurt anyone by holding any important public office. She is no policy wonk, only a publicity she-hound.
The only thing she can do for America is be citizen Palin - former mayor of Wasilla - if that is the sum total of her public service, it would be to her credit. She can only be worse. Spare us all, including her, the inevitable grief.
