WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday outlined his plan to create 2.5 million jobs in coming years to rebuild roads and bridges and modernize schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis; these are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address. The economic recovery plan being developed by his staff aims to create 2.5 million jobs by January 2011, and he wants to get it through Congress quickly and sign it soon after taking office.

He called the plan "big enough to meet the challenges we face" and said that it will jump-start job creation but also "lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy."

Aides said the economic plan outlined Saturday went further that the president-elect has gone before.

WATCH WEEKLY ADDRESS:

A trio of crises _ housing, credit and financial _ have badly damaged the economy, and financial analysts have projected the country's economic hardships will continue through much of 2009.

Obama acknowledged Saturday that evidence is growing the country is "facing an economic crisis of historic proportions." He noted turmoil on Wall Street, a decrease in new home purchases, growing jobless claims and the menacing problem of deflation.

He said he was pleased Congress passed an extension of unemployment benefits this week, but added, "We must do more to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."

Figures out this week showed new claims for jobless aid had reached a 16-year high. "If we don't act swiftly and boldly, most experts now believe that we could lose millions of jobs next year," Obama said.

He cautioned, "There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better." But Obama said Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, "is our chance to begin anew."

Obama said getting congressional approval for his broad economic plan will not be easy.

"I will need and seek support from Republicans and Democrats, and I'll be welcome to ideas and suggestions from both sides of the aisle," he said. "But what is not negotiable is the need for immediate action."

Across the country, Americans "are lying awake at night wondering if next week's paycheck will cover next month's bills," people are showing up at work to clear out their desks and retirees are watching their life savings disappear, Obama said.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to 542,000. That marked the highest level since July 1992 and provided fresh evidence of a rapidly weakening job market that is expected to get even worse next year.

In this country's darkest hours, the American people have risen above their divisions to solve their problems, he said.

"We have acted boldly, bravely, and above all, together," Obama said. "That is the chance our new beginning now offers us, and that is the challenge we must rise to in the days to come. It is time to act. As the next president of the United States, I will."

When you get home (from trick or treating) President tarzan is going to take as much as your candy and give it to the kids that didn't want to walk to as many houses as you did, but still want as much candy as you.

------------------------------------

More accurately - The plan is to increase the number of houses giving out candy, so you don't have to walk so far and you score more...

Why not give the man a chance? He is going to be the next president of the US and all of your railing against him isn't going to change that. If you seriously think that this country is headed in the wrong direction, even with Obama at the helm, get yourself elected and do something about it instead of posting insults on an anonymous blog.

If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Building roads and other infrastructure is great and needs to be done but that is not the answer. Jobs that are paid paid for with tax money are just like service jobs. It is still just trading dollars. The only sustaining growth in economy is taking a raw material turning it into a finished product. It really is simple. Do it the way it was done when we had a healthy economy.
1. Reinstate protectionism.
2. Rebuild the labor code.
3. Reregulate the essential industries.

I am getting sick and tired of this BS anti-globalisation and anti-free trade. Its getting old. Protectionism will not only hurt us in the long run but hurt small countries who are trying to get out of poverty. That is beyond cruel to suggest starving another country because you can't manufacture socks anymore! We need to move on from these type of manufacturing industry and create new highly technological industries. Man, I seriously can't understand the rampant idiocy on this board

How is building roads and electric grids not turning out "finished products?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:52 PM on 11/22/2008

Building roads does not increase the value in Americans pockets because it only transfers value from the taxpayers pocket to the pockets of the roadbulders. The taxpayer loses just as much value as the road builder is increased. All you have done is swap dollars from one person to another. If you take iron ore and turn it into a car, the buyer of that car is out nothing because he still has the same value in the car itself. That is growth in economy.

Reinstating protectionism will only hurt the consumers. Give me a freaking break here.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:08 PM on 11/22/2008

Please explain how this will hurt consumers. I explained why we need protectionism. Our economy was healthy when we operated on the the basics of protectionism, a strong labor code, and government regulation of big business. It looks to me like a well paid work force(strong labor code) created the demand that allowed companies to prosper supplying that demand. Protective tariffs(protectionism) protected our companies from unfair competition from overseas factories who were exploiting cheap labor. Government regulation of essential industries kept the greed of the so called free market from running wild.
It has taken several years but we are just now seeing the results of failures in all three of those areas.
Please explain how protectionism hurts consumers.

I am finally hopeful about change in our country. Obama has tried to keep us informed of what he is planning. I wept when Bush was elected the second term. I have written for 10 years about problems I have witnessed and had to live with because of illness. I can see the team Obama is putting together there is hope. Because of my illness I have had nothing but time to read government reports and of people suffering, etc. Please give the man time to prove himself before making judgement. Linda

Wall Street enables you to be part owner in diverse business, and either realize monetary increases in the form of dividends, or stock price increases when a company is successful. You can actually go to some companies directly and bypass "Wall Street". What does your insurance provider "produce"?

"Despite the hopes of many human-rights advocates, the new Obama Justice Department is not likely to launch major new criminal probes of harsh interrogations and other alleged abuses by the Bush administration," Newsweek's Michael Isikoff reports. "But one idea that has currency among some top Obama advisers is setting up a 9/11-style commission that would investigate counterterrorism policies and make public as many details as possible."

sounds like something mccain would recommend.

he's setting up a good economic team, but, justice may lose it's relevance. sad that all those lives in iraq are gone, and noone will really be held accountable.
