Barack Obama

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday outlined his plan to create 2.5 million jobs in coming years to rebuild roads and bridges and modernize schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis; these are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address. The economic recovery plan being developed by his staff aims to create 2.5 million jobs by January 2011, and he wants to get it through Congress quickly and sign it soon after taking office.

He called the plan "big enough to meet the challenges we face" and said that it will jump-start job creation but also "lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy."

Aides said the economic plan outlined Saturday went further that the president-elect has gone before.

WATCH WEEKLY ADDRESS:

A trio of crises _ housing, credit and financial _ have badly damaged the economy, and financial analysts have projected the country's economic hardships will continue through much of 2009.

Obama acknowledged Saturday that evidence is growing the country is "facing an economic crisis of historic proportions." He noted turmoil on Wall Street, a decrease in new home purchases, growing jobless claims and the menacing problem of deflation.

Story continues below

He said he was pleased Congress passed an extension of unemployment benefits this week, but added, "We must do more to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."

Figures out this week showed new claims for jobless aid had reached a 16-year high. "If we don't act swiftly and boldly, most experts now believe that we could lose millions of jobs next year," Obama said.

He cautioned, "There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better." But Obama said Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, "is our chance to begin anew."

Obama said getting congressional approval for his broad economic plan will not be easy.

"I will need and seek support from Republicans and Democrats, and I'll be welcome to ideas and suggestions from both sides of the aisle," he said. "But what is not negotiable is the need for immediate action."

Across the country, Americans "are lying awake at night wondering if next week's paycheck will cover next month's bills," people are showing up at work to clear out their desks and retirees are watching their life savings disappear, Obama said.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to 542,000. That marked the highest level since July 1992 and provided fresh evidence of a rapidly weakening job market that is expected to get even worse next year.

In this country's darkest hours, the American people have risen above their divisions to solve their problems, he said.

"We have acted boldly, bravely, and above all, together," Obama said. "That is the chance our new beginning now offers us, and that is the challenge we must rise to in the days to come. It is time to act. As the next president of the United States, I will."

Obama's commitment to renewable energy is music to my ears.

America has the potential to be virtually energy independent through solar and wind power alone. It will require massive investments in infrastructure but isn't this what we need right now? It may lead to increased debt but this is "good" debt. It will give the United States the energy security it needs for the 21st century while creating millions of jobs. Unlike spending billions on jet fighters, this money will benefit future generations by reducing CO2 emissions and mitigating climate change. When you think about it, we are still living off our grandparents infrastructure projects. Most of the roads, bridges and electricity grid was built between the 1920s and the 1960s. What is unfortunate is the fact that the Repugs blew the budget surpluses and ran up huge deficits. Otherwise this infrastructure spending would be so much easier on the public purse.

Cut the pentagon budget in half or more and reinvest the rest in renewable energy now. The need to be in the Middle Eats will go away, employment will soar, the money will recirculate here, and the neocons will not have anyone to pre-emptively nuke for cause.

I have one simple question to all the haters out there.

Tell me what is so terrifying about a man [regardless of race, creed, color or political party] trying to do the right thing by "all" people?

That is "ALL" people regardless of race, creed, color or political party, etc.

"Explain this to me like I'm a 6 year old."

Why not give the man a chance? He is going to be the next president of the US and all of your railing against him isn't going to change that. If you seriously think that this country is headed in the wrong direction, even with Obama at the helm, get yourself elected and do something about it instead of posting insults on an anonymous blog.

If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

Ok, the plan is to blame bush through out 2009. Promise results for 2013, in the second term.
It will be interesting to see the results vs the rhetoric. We need results not blame and excuses.

However, it is encouraging to see the Clinton team being brought in, in force. The Clinton team did a good job with the economy, so we have hope. The Clinton team cleaned up the mess from Bush I, they should be able to clean up some of his sons mess.

It is disheartening to read some of these posts.

On one hand, people are complaining, stating Obama won't do anything. Then. . .when he proposes some action, people become cynical.

Let's give this leader a chance. We are all in this together and after eight miserable years under Bush, at least there are plans in place to rescue our troubled economy.

You could be right, but it is equally likely that the hopey movement is populated by people with meaningless little lives too, that are plein d'espoir that Pres Hopey is going to fix everything.
For example 2.5 million 'new' jobs? Why would we need so many new jobs? Unemployment is low still and we're going into a downturn. We can afford a bit more unemployment. Why now is it such a good idea to build infrastructure? Yes, it's an investment, but we're in a ton of debt already; why should we build up more?
Every time a 3rd world country gets in trouble like we're in, the World Bank advises fiscal austerity, not spending sprees.
This is just not a good idea and whether you 'believe' or not is irrelevant. Obama is going to make a mess of this and it's not clear that McCain would have done much better. If you want the real culprits, they're Barney Frank and Alan Greenspan and Obama is not about fixing the mess they made.

The negative, fearful, scornful, hateful comments all come from people who are dead-set against change, even as they watch their country swirl down the drain. It's just fear of change and the unknown, even though right now what's "known" is about as scary as it gets.

I find it really interesting that they like to hang out up here.... that tells me that part of them wants to be recognized by those of us with a positive outlook, and hopefully it can influence them and coax them out of their fearful little cubbyholes. It must be a nasty place to live.

This is no plan - what will creating 2.5M jobs do? Right you are, absolutely nothing. The thing to do is to pass midnight legislation to ease the crushing tax burden on he bedrock foundation of our economy, the wealthiest 2% - but don't get to close to the whirl of the trickle down job creation machine that will immediately follow, we don't need to further burden wealthy doctors with bogus emergency room visits or wealthy lawyers with frivolous law suits - just stand clear and let the money changers handle this.

In which land have you been living? Hasn't that been the Bush's record for the last eight years? And the Reagonomics theory of trickle down wealth finally failed! In this country, it is a falacy that the rich are being levied 35% tax burden as they would like you to believe. After all the tax loopholes designed to help the wealthy, they come close to paying something like no tax or 15% if they do pay.
The new economy, call is Obamanomics, is building the economy from the ground up. If nature teaches us anything, you would have known that you erect any structure from the ground up. If the ground is strong, the top has nothing to flail for.

Bush is a dummy. He didn't think about creating 2.5 million jobs because he was busy choking on pretzels. If he had been paying attention to the "little guy" he would have seen the need to create 2.5 million jobs. Simple as that. I'm hoping Obama doesn't just create 2.5 million jobs, but he creates 2.5 million jobs making 250k plus a year. That way he can really lay on the taxes, and reduce the debt. Pretty darn simple when you think about it.

He is filling his Cabinet with intelligent, experienced people, not just a bunch of political hacks. He is moving faster with that than any president in modern history.

Well, what do you propose that he say, for instance? Not to mention that in 8 years, GW Bush never once mentioned investing in the future of the country. GW Bush, as all Republicans do, saw government as the means for helping the private corporate sector. At the very least, no one will be able to accuse Obama of putting the coproratocracy before the "people". But, please, share with us what you'd have liked Obama to say in respect to the economy?
