WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday outlined his plan to create 2.5 million jobs in coming years to rebuild roads and bridges and modernize schools while developing alternative energy sources and more efficient cars.

"These aren't just steps to pull ourselves out of this immediate crisis; these are the long-term investments in our economic future that have been ignored for far too long," Obama said in the weekly Democratic radio address. The economic recovery plan being developed by his staff aims to create 2.5 million jobs by January 2011, and he wants to get it through Congress quickly and sign it soon after taking office.

He called the plan "big enough to meet the challenges we face" and said that it will jump-start job creation but also "lay the foundation for a strong and growing economy."

Aides said the economic plan outlined Saturday went further that the president-elect has gone before.

WATCH WEEKLY ADDRESS:

A trio of crises _ housing, credit and financial _ have badly damaged the economy, and financial analysts have projected the country's economic hardships will continue through much of 2009.

Obama acknowledged Saturday that evidence is growing the country is "facing an economic crisis of historic proportions." He noted turmoil on Wall Street, a decrease in new home purchases, growing jobless claims and the menacing problem of deflation.

He said he was pleased Congress passed an extension of unemployment benefits this week, but added, "We must do more to put people back to work and get our economy moving again."

Figures out this week showed new claims for jobless aid had reached a 16-year high. "If we don't act swiftly and boldly, most experts now believe that we could lose millions of jobs next year," Obama said.

He cautioned, "There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis, which has been many years in the making, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better." But Obama said Inauguration Day, Jan. 20, "is our chance to begin anew."

Obama said getting congressional approval for his broad economic plan will not be easy.

"I will need and seek support from Republicans and Democrats, and I'll be welcome to ideas and suggestions from both sides of the aisle," he said. "But what is not negotiable is the need for immediate action."

Across the country, Americans "are lying awake at night wondering if next week's paycheck will cover next month's bills," people are showing up at work to clear out their desks and retirees are watching their life savings disappear, Obama said.

On Thursday, the Labor Department reported that claims for unemployment benefits jumped last week to 542,000. That marked the highest level since July 1992 and provided fresh evidence of a rapidly weakening job market that is expected to get even worse next year.

In this country's darkest hours, the American people have risen above their divisions to solve their problems, he said.

"We have acted boldly, bravely, and above all, together," Obama said. "That is the chance our new beginning now offers us, and that is the challenge we must rise to in the days to come. It is time to act. As the next president of the United States, I will."

Unless Mitch McConnel has his way. Don't you think that the Corruplicans are colluding to obstruct and undermine the healing of America? Don't you think that they're thanking their lucky stars that they did not eliminate the filibuster?

Our only hope is that Obama's popularity is so overwhelming that the minority obstructers view the clock ticking on their time if they obstruct. I see the American people as continuing to have an important voice in this Administration's success. We need to make it perfectly clear that we will not tolerate obstructionist legislators at such a critical time for America's future.

WE need to get back to WE THE PEOPLE and get away from the me, me, me, me Corruptlican mantra!

Hmmm maybe we should re-address eliminating the filibuster, it is clear they are obstructionists

Dick Durbin said in May 2008:

In the entire history of the Senate, the total number of filibusters in any 2-year period, the maximum, was 57. So far in this 2-year period, the Republicans have engaged in 71 filibusters, and, of course, we have another 6 or 7 months to go in this session of Congress

Let them try! All the Dems have to do is make them actually filibuster (instead of the recent faux filibusters) and alert the media. Don't forget, C-Span is there all of the time to record their hi-jinks.

The Republickers need to understand that their obstructing will only serve to keep then in the irrelevant minority, if they don't get it pretty soon then they do so at their own peril.

I'm sixty-one years old, and have been a political independent all my life. I'm almost embarassed to admit it, but watching Barack still brings tears to my eyes. I can hardly believe that America had the courage, and the vision, to elect not just a Black Man, but a man of such intelligence, compassion, and self-confidence. He doesn't have a magic wand, but he has the capacity to inspire, and to lead. Godspeed, President Obama.

2.5 million more jobs? And the American unemployment rate is what now....6.5%? and most experts predict it may rise to 10% within the next year? That's what, ...30 million people out of work? Maybe he should move the decimal place over and make it 25 million more jobs. That might make more of a difference.

And seriously, get over the whole "American Dream" thing. It's a myth. End of story.

Do these people really believe that President Obama wouldn't create more jobs if he could? This is a start, a beginning. What solutions did Bush and his cronies have, none!! This is the direction we need to go. Once we start creating jobs, the economy should begin to grow again on its own. The government is just priming the pump. In spite of the right wing, this is not socialism, it is just the same thing that we did in the 1930 depression and that eventually moved us forward. I hope we don't have to wait 9 years again, because some people took advantage of the situation and started WWII. I believe world leaders will join with us this time to keep us from facing that kind of outcome.

There is no real change coming! Look at all the Clinton era veterans Obama is bringing in. As Rev. Wright put it, Obama is a politician. This isn't change, this is recycling!

The war is coming home.Obama has to serve all the lawyers who support him. He will enforce more government regulations, more laws, to create business for the lawyers. Lawsuit galore!

Either way you look at it, politicians are out to create opportunities for their wealthiest supporters. Bush=oil and war. Obama=lawyers.

This is the first time I've noticed Obama reading from a teleprompter...I' m sure it's not the first time he's used one, but this time his eyes kept darting slightly to his left to read his speech.

I hope his staff can move the teleprompter a bit to make him look more like he's speaking directly into the camera. His strength has always been that he looks like he's talking directly at you.

Superficial to worry about such things, perhaps, but they do make a difference.

No, this is about a broadcast gig. The style actually matters as much as the content. The President-elect and the Obama team are intelligent and nothing if not media-savvy. They'll work on making these weekly video addresses warmer and less stilted.

I'm sure he's so busy right now that President-elect Obama doesn't have much time for rehearsal on these things. After he's been doing them every week for a few months it will probably become second-nature to him.

As it is, the content of the address was on-point for the concerns of most Americans. Staying in touch with the American people via Youtube every week is an INSPIRED decision. Seriously, it's almost scary-smart. I kinda like my President being scary-smart, it's been.... oh, about eight years since I had some of that.

I guess you paid very little attention during the primaries. It was patently obvious because his head went from one side to the other with no straight on looks to any audience that he almost always read from a teleprompter even when the camera shots would not be large enough for me to actually see the teleprompters on state. .It irritated the heck out of me, but the underlying message and the desire to be on message was far more important to him. I would rather have a thoughtful speech read from a teleprompter than a buffoon adlibbing with words like "Make my day" any time. It shows he cares enough about the nation to put some consideration into the words he chooses to use and that he knows words count not just here at home, but throughout the world. However, from the interview we saw last week on 60 minutes, it is clear that he puts thoughts into what he says even when speaking spontaneously. He is not going to give David Letterman much material, though, nor inflame our enemies by his off the cuff comments. How refreshing. It took a long time, but he has won my support and best wishes for accomplishing some of hte goals he expouses so eloquently.

We've lost a million jobs so far this year according to the Messiah, so he is actually only promising to add a net 1.5 million over 2 years? That comes out to about 60,000 per month which is less than a normal economy would creat with no stimulus. What a joke.

July 2006

Today, The Government Released New Jobs Figures – 121,000 Jobs Created In June. The economy has created about 1.85 million jobs over the past 12 months – and more than 5.4 million since August 2003.
