LOS ANGELES — The Screen Actors Guild said Saturday it will ask its members to authorize a strike after its first contract talks in four months with Hollywood studios failed despite the help of a federal mediator.

Federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez adjourned the talks between SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers shortly before 1 a.m. after two marathon sessions failed to produce an agreement. No new talks are scheduled.

The SAG, representing more than 120,000 actors in movies, television and other media, said in a statement that it will launch a "full-scale education campaign in support of a strike authorization."

Talks broke down after the studios sought the right to create productions for new media, such as the Internet, using nonunion actors and without paying residuals, said Doug Allen, SAG national executive director and chief negotiator.

Residuals are payments to actors that are made every time a production airs, such as TV reruns. Many SAG members rely on residuals for more than half of their income, Allen said.

"They're asking us to bless a system we believe would be the beginning of the end of residuals, and that's a very scary thought for working actors," he said.

The producers' alliance condemned the SAG decision and said it remains the only major Hollywood guild without a labor deal this year.

"Now, SAG is bizarrely asking its members to bail out the failed negotiating strategy with a strike vote _ at a time of historic economic crisis," a producers' statement said. "The tone-deafness of SAG is stunning."

SAG's national board has already authorized its negotiating committee to call for a strike authorization vote if mediation failed. The vote would take more than a month and require more than 75 percent approval to pass.

SAG wants union coverage for all Internet-only productions regardless of budget and residual payments for Internet productions replayed online, as well as continued actor protections during work stoppages.

But the AMPTP said it was untenable for SAG to demand a better deal than what writers, directors and another actors union accepted earlier in the year, especially now that the economy has worsened.

The producers' group this week said it had reached its sixth labor deal this year, a tentative agreement on a three-year contract with the local branches of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, accounting for 35,000 workers.

The stagehands alliance accepted Internet provisions that were modeled on agreements with other unions, the producers group said.

Actors in prime-time television shows and movies have been working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30, with the hope of avoiding a repeat of the 100-day writers strike which shut down production of dozens of TV shows and cost the Los Angeles area economy an estimated $2.5 billion.

One has to give SAG President Alan Rosenberg credit for a "put one foot in front of the other" tenaciousness. His march forward in the face of challenges within his own union and from the rest of the union movement and external opposition is not dissimilar to the Obama campaign.

Thursday Rosenberg brought to the bargaining table WGA's request for arbitration about the subject Rosenberg has been arguing. The WGA just now discovered they screwed up when eight months ago they signed an agreement with the AMPTP. As Rosenberg kept pointing out, the DGA/WGA contract provisions for new media residuals were flawed.

It's not complicated to understand. If a pre-2008 release owned by GE (all the NBC Universal related studios) or News Corp (all the Fox related studios) in 2010 is being purchased mostly as a download, the corporation gets the money that historically went to writers, directors, and actors. It’s a big win for GE and News Corp.

In the middle of the writers strike, the DGA, a middle management union, sold out the creative workers causing unprecedented pressure on the WGA to settle.

As I have noted in my blog http://thelostscripts.blogspot.com/ rank and file of the Hollywood union movement failed to back the writers. After being out of work for several months and under pressure from some GE subsidiary for debt paymentst, they pressured the writers to settle, with GE.

Now we'll see if SAG members also want to accept WalMart compensation.

i was right there with you until the last sentence - next time don't kill a good argument by ending on an overstatement - and if you doubt what I'm writing, go work at WalMart.

I think Alan Rosenberg should be ousted as president. He is stike happy. It is easy for him to say "let's strike" when his wife earns over 5 million a season on CSI. SO he lives the good life and can afford to sit out for a while. In this time of economic turmoil it is irresponsible to ask the membership to strike. Yes the actors deserve what they want but the other unions agreed to deals and if SAG wants to place blame it should be with their friends at those unions as they set the mark.

hahaha, I'm sorry. But it is near impossible to take this seriously with names like SAG and Alliance of Motion Pictures. You make movies, not policy and war. Noobs.

You may think it sounds weak. But people all over the world (and probably you too) watch TV and movies. The bottom line is, this is a huge industry. Many lives will be affected by a strike. We are all working for a living here. I hope we can continue to feed our children and keep paying our mortgages or rents.

90% of SAG's members don't even make their living by acting.

As a professional in the film industry, that DOES make a living at it, I highly resent that a bunch of Waiters, Waitresses and Bartenders have the ability to stop me from earning a living, just because their Union is a complete and utter mess.

The REAL problem is that SAG took in too many members that they ultimately can't provide work for. All they cared about was stuffing their coffers with membership dues. Start losing members through a program of attrition and be done with it. Stop making people like me suffer because of your own failed internal policies.

I'm sick of all this.

I will tell you Why they are doing it now, It is because the Economy is shot to hell! Everyone is suffering from some sort of Depression, So To try and hide from the Reality of our real worlds, we use TV as an escape. Everyone needs a Good laugh once in a while to relieve stress or sadness!

So They will take this opportunity when we are at our lowest & worst to try and get More Money. Which is A Selfish inconsiderate Move. They think we will be desperate!..lol..
No we figured it out during the writers strike! What they fail to realize is America is FED UP
Sorry guys, Just a little too late, Poor Planning, Try again!.

We now Begin to entertain ourselves, enjoy the agony of being around our Families
Such as Mother eek....lol..just kidding Ha!
Sitting down with family and friends and playing Cards! I miss a good game of Euchre, Spades or even Scrabble, or just simply reading a book.
Its Time we Americans start using our own imaginations !! Why count on someone else to make us Happy? We can Do it ourselves ! Yes We Can!!
Screw The Actors!! Thanks But no Thanks, We Got this covered.

SAG members who aren't beholden to or hoodwinked by the Membership First faction that still has control of the Hollywood chapter will vote against the strike. My money's on the anti-Membership Firsters who are simply tired of not auditioning, never mind not working. The MF crew have, in the past, leaked confidential contract negotiation details to the press, sent anti-SAG/AFTRA merger emails to the membership from servers belonging to producers ("the management side"), drove the union into at least one election recount that I can remember, and so on. There's much more...but I'm forgetting or trying to forget. I'm proud to be SAG...but there's probably a Pulitzer waiting for the journalist who can find the money trail flowing to some of the SAG members who are grinding this great organization into the dust. Yes, producers and advertisers are making money hand over fist from our work. Yes, we deserve to make more for the work we do and the wealth we create. But there's a time to pick your battles...and there's a time to lock in guarantees for a larger piece of the pie, especially when the economy's in the tank and nobody in our business is working, including actors, crew, caterers, and so on. Let's find a way to make a SAG/AFTRA Merger work, so we can present a strong, united front to the management, and we can set a great example for union workers everywhere.

That's some fascinating swill you're selling there rcbsfo.

Here's what you need to know: the "negotiations" that just happened? The "moderates" who were just voted in, yes, the big names - were IN THE ROOM. You'd think they'd walk out saying they voted not to send out the strike authorization and that the MF faction were hopelessly stubborn.

They didn't do that. And, they won't. You know why? Because THE "MODERATES" VOTED TO SEND OUT THE STRIKE AUTHORIZATION TOO.

Why? Because the AMPTP wouldn't negotiate on ANYTHING. Not ONE SINGLE THING. And SAG bent over so far backwards, they could kiss their own asses. Ask somebody who was there. Get informed before you vote my friend. The AMPTP is out for blood.

Lets not forget we are talking about the ARTS. They historically have not offered consistent pay. Your occupation is more like a hobby than a livelihood. Become a Stagehand or Gaffer or Propman if you want consistent work

Oh the old "your job is an avocation, not a vocation" argument.
As a teacher, I am familiar with this: you like your job, so why do you
want a decent wage?

People are addicted to TV, not ARTS. And TV is tremendously profitable,
for some.

It would be kinda boring if they all "Become a Stagehand or Gaffer or Propman",
who would they be prepping stages for?

Yeah, they make somewhere around $1,000.00 per day plus residuals. How much do they pay you as a teacher?

LOL!

Nice to see someone dancing around the edges. I love it when radio talk show people (a lot of them being right wing but I'm not going to peg entire groups) whine and bleat about people not working, and then their daily caller friend talks about their daily golf game, mater-of-factly as if everybody has the time to play golf.

And you're right; those other jobs are more consistent. And worthy of decent pay too.

I really feel sorry for the writers; told to write gibber or to dig up some dead show because creativity is even more fleeting than mannequin celebrities (who are NOT actors)...

I've worked in post production for the past 12 years. This year, my modest salary was reduced by $10,000 as a result of the WGA strike. They got about the equivalent of $160 extra a month for the next four years. I am left working paycheck to paycheck to support my family. Now SAG is asking for more than the WGA, DGA, IATSE, and AFTRA have already agreed to? This is the most asinine negotiating stance I've ever seen. It would be like the UAW going on strike right now as the big 3 are going bankrupt. Everyone is hurting right now. I've seen many job cuts to support staff jobs in post production, distribution, hell even studio janitors - they have yet to return since the end of the WGA strike. Taking the same deal the other four major entertainment industry unions already accepted is not weakness, it is the only prudent thing to do. It's not worth thousands of below the line employees losing their homes and health care for George Clooney to get an extra $300 a month. I hope the SAG rank and file have the courage to recognize this.

I agree it's a bad time to push for more compensation thru the new media.
BUT, come on, this doesn't have anything to do with Clooney getting an extra
$300 a month.

Look at the concessions that the WGA got after their 100 day strike. It added up to thousands of below the line crew losing work - many who have since left the industry since their jobs did not come back post-strike and a net gain of approximately $160/month per WGA member. The WGA strike was not worth the pain it inflicted on both writers and below the line crew - look at all the development deals that were cut and all the episodes that were not produced - $160/month over four years will never come close to making up the losses. $300/month is actually a gross exaggeration. With 120,000 members, a SAG strike would not result in anything close to that. Which is my point - the collateral damage caused by these strikes far outweigh any minor gains that would result.

Every strike in the last 10 years in hollywood was actors or writers. Commercial actors strike in the 90's sent commercial production overseas and to Canada. Wages went down because work went away all for %95 of the unions members who cannot get full time work so they want huge residuals so they only have to work 10-15 days a year. Its a pipe dream to expect royalties whenever their image appears on the internet. Actors are a small portion of the people involved in the entertainment industry yet their greed will stall a greater portion of the industry in BAD economic times, while Unions are in the gun sites of the greedy gop. Failure to bailout the big 3 is in hopes of ditching the UAW so as a union member (IATSE) a strike seems like suicide. Negotiate like the rest of us, take your 1 time flat fee buyout and hope people can afford TV and Internet in the years to come.

The timing is exactly the timing they waited for. It's almost award season, and this strike, since it threatens those awards shows, is, in essence, blackmail.

Great actors are fearless. There are so many moments of human dignity and frailty in his performances. One uncompromising scene stands out for me from "The Verdict:" His character, lawyer Frank Galvin, trying to hide the shame of his insecurity from Charlotte Rampling's "Laura," locking himself behind the bathroom door as the phobias run wild through him.

SKHactor - Unfortunately SAG has the unlucky timing of negotiating this contact during the worst economic times in years. I think it's great that you supported the grocery workers. If I could support SAG by driving a few extra miles every day - I'd do that. Asking me to risk losing my house is a tremendously greater sacrifice. I'm sorry - if times were better and I had more money in the bank I'd be much more willing to ride through the storm a bit for you. I honestly would.

I wish I was making $1,000 a day plus residuals. I bet most of America does too.

Here's a thought... why not find a job that provides more than 10-20 days per year of work, and stop your whining?

90% of SAG's membership are hobbyists. Stop making it so hard for those of us in the industry that DO make a living at.
