LOS ANGELES — The Screen Actors Guild said Saturday it will ask its members to authorize a strike after its first contract talks in four months with Hollywood studios failed despite the help of a federal mediator.

Federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez adjourned the talks between SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers shortly before 1 a.m. after two marathon sessions failed to produce an agreement. No new talks are scheduled.

The SAG, representing more than 120,000 actors in movies, television and other media, said in a statement that it will launch a "full-scale education campaign in support of a strike authorization."

Talks broke down after the studios sought the right to create productions for new media, such as the Internet, using nonunion actors and without paying residuals, said Doug Allen, SAG national executive director and chief negotiator.

Residuals are payments to actors that are made every time a production airs, such as TV reruns. Many SAG members rely on residuals for more than half of their income, Allen said.

"They're asking us to bless a system we believe would be the beginning of the end of residuals, and that's a very scary thought for working actors," he said.

The producers' alliance condemned the SAG decision and said it remains the only major Hollywood guild without a labor deal this year.

"Now, SAG is bizarrely asking its members to bail out the failed negotiating strategy with a strike vote _ at a time of historic economic crisis," a producers' statement said. "The tone-deafness of SAG is stunning."

SAG's national board has already authorized its negotiating committee to call for a strike authorization vote if mediation failed. The vote would take more than a month and require more than 75 percent approval to pass.

SAG wants union coverage for all Internet-only productions regardless of budget and residual payments for Internet productions replayed online, as well as continued actor protections during work stoppages.

But the AMPTP said it was untenable for SAG to demand a better deal than what writers, directors and another actors union accepted earlier in the year, especially now that the economy has worsened.

The producers' group this week said it had reached its sixth labor deal this year, a tentative agreement on a three-year contract with the local branches of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, accounting for 35,000 workers.

The stagehands alliance accepted Internet provisions that were modeled on agreements with other unions, the producers group said.

Actors in prime-time television shows and movies have been working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30, with the hope of avoiding a repeat of the 100-day writers strike which shut down production of dozens of TV shows and cost the Los Angeles area economy an estimated $2.5 billion.

This is the most irresponsible thing I've heard in ages. The California economy is already in the toilet. The film industry is trying to regain its footing from the writers strike. Actors who vote for this should be ashamed of themselves. They should vote their leadership out of office for suggesting it.

Good idea SAG!

You can, no doubt, count on the support of the American people. You know we can feel your pain. Every member of SAG works so hard and gets paid so little that the SAG member's plight dwarfs that of, oh, say an automotive worker (we all know how greedy those people are).

Yes indeed SAG, you go out on strike. And stay out too until you get every last thing you beautiful people want.

I grew up in LA and, believe me, this will affect an enormous number of people who are not actors and who will be hit with a double whammy: the worst economic crisis in 80 years and the regional economic crisis that will occur with yet another strike. I am sympathetic with their concerns, but this is a really, really bad idea. Take the deal the writers got and wait for better times.

TO THE GUILD: YOU ARE UNBELIEVABLY SELFISH, given these economic times. THOUSANDS of people in the movie and TV industry (you know, all those guys working on your crews) would be affected by you petulant, self-aggrandized BIGHEADS. Look around, you spoiled brats!! GET A GRIP and help out this country for a change!! I for one would never again see a movie in which any of these potential strikers starred. Small potatoes to you spoiled stars, but if a LOT of us started feeling that way...there would be clout. I call this strike move plainly "against the interests of the country", therefore, it is a threat to our economic security. BTW, I am by no means a right-wing fanatic. I'm as blue as you can get. Stop it! Go volunteer in a soup kitchen and quit thinking of yourselves for a change!!

Not again people. Please. The collateral damage is too overwhelming especially now with the state of our economy. You're going to put thousands out of work again. Two words for you.

Selfish bastards.

I'm a member of SAG and will vote NO on this. I think it's really arrogant of my union in times like these to even consider a strike. The number of people who will be out of work on the production end is unacceptable.
And here we all are struggling through a bad economy and SAG wants a strike?
I hope the membership votes no.

NO ONE in this industry deserves to be paid more than the average skilled worker in any other industry.

Idiots. ABC just announced the cancellation of "Pushing Daisies" a show that you can argue didn't recover from the strike. There are others. The economy is terrible. A strike would absolutely devestate the economy in that area further. Total idiots.

I'm sick of hearing about the struggling 95%. I'm reserving my sympathy for those who keep buying lottery tickets but never win.

I'm generally for unions in principle, but SAG just seems to be going way out of line here. First, the economy sucks for everyone, and this will make it even worse. Second, another massive entertainment strike in the same year would be suicide for the business. Will anyone watch their shows after another months-long hiatus? Third, why on earth should SAG get a BETTER deal than the writers, directors, and other actors have agreed to already? They should be happy with the same terms, period. If they want more than that, I have no sympathy for them. They need a serious reality check.

Fine, at a time when Americans cannot afford much but a movie or even a good program/movie on TV....when We are in dire straights emotionally, for the SAG to even consider taking away what little stress relief we get from entertainment too, is unconscionable.

For me, the Writers strike nearly caused me to completely, once and for all shut off all Sat Services, this will def do it.

Even for "caring, liberal" hollywood, its All about the money...the timing of this sure says a lot, eh?

One serious comment on this:

The last time they struck it was a huge blessing for the film production business in Canada (particularly), Spain, South Africa and Australia. And it didn't helpthe actors in this country very much. having been in the production business for 25 years, much of whicvh in Canada, I can assure you it is so, so easy to move production to Vancouver or Toronto.

There's a lot of talent out of this country and, if heard the interview on NPR the other day about actors from other countries who perform as Americans in popular TV shows (think House), it's getting bigger. The reasoning of the producers and directors -- the actors are better-trained and more versatile. So there really is not much of a reason to be tied to SAG actors, anyway. Get over yourselves, SAG and Hollywood, you're not the be-all-and-end-all anymore.

Have Alec Baldwin and the Film Actor's Guild (F.A.G.) weighed in on this yet?!
