LOS ANGELES — The Screen Actors Guild said Saturday it will ask its members to authorize a strike after its first contract talks in four months with Hollywood studios failed despite the help of a federal mediator.

Federal mediator Juan Carlos Gonzalez adjourned the talks between SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers shortly before 1 a.m. after two marathon sessions failed to produce an agreement. No new talks are scheduled.

The SAG, representing more than 120,000 actors in movies, television and other media, said in a statement that it will launch a "full-scale education campaign in support of a strike authorization."

Talks broke down after the studios sought the right to create productions for new media, such as the Internet, using nonunion actors and without paying residuals, said Doug Allen, SAG national executive director and chief negotiator.

Residuals are payments to actors that are made every time a production airs, such as TV reruns. Many SAG members rely on residuals for more than half of their income, Allen said.

"They're asking us to bless a system we believe would be the beginning of the end of residuals, and that's a very scary thought for working actors," he said.

The producers' alliance condemned the SAG decision and said it remains the only major Hollywood guild without a labor deal this year.

"Now, SAG is bizarrely asking its members to bail out the failed negotiating strategy with a strike vote _ at a time of historic economic crisis," a producers' statement said. "The tone-deafness of SAG is stunning."

SAG's national board has already authorized its negotiating committee to call for a strike authorization vote if mediation failed. The vote would take more than a month and require more than 75 percent approval to pass.

SAG wants union coverage for all Internet-only productions regardless of budget and residual payments for Internet productions replayed online, as well as continued actor protections during work stoppages.

But the AMPTP said it was untenable for SAG to demand a better deal than what writers, directors and another actors union accepted earlier in the year, especially now that the economy has worsened.

The producers' group this week said it had reached its sixth labor deal this year, a tentative agreement on a three-year contract with the local branches of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, accounting for 35,000 workers.

The stagehands alliance accepted Internet provisions that were modeled on agreements with other unions, the producers group said.

Actors in prime-time television shows and movies have been working under the terms of a contract that expired June 30, with the hope of avoiding a repeat of the 100-day writers strike which shut down production of dozens of TV shows and cost the Los Angeles area economy an estimated $2.5 billion.

Oh dear, I'm in a panic. No movies, no TV. What could I possibly do with my nonexistent spare time. Read a book? Unthinkable.

It's much deeper than that. I will lose work. I won't be able to feed my children or keep a roof over our heads. We already suffered financially from the Writers' strike. And like everyone else, any college and/or retirement investments we may own have all been rocked already. I couldn't give a rats ass about a tv show. It's my livelihood that I am concerned about.

As if the economy isn't bad enough. The SAG leadership really needs to get their priorities in order. And if they can't, hopefully the membership can see that now is not the time to go on strike. Entertainment is a luxury not a necessity. The industry has yet to recover from the last strike when people realized they didn't need Hollywood entertainment as much as they once did. This would be a disaster for all SAG families and the families of the other union members involved in production.

Greed and stupidity knows no bounds. Striking in the mist of this horrendous financial crisis? Really? If the ASG pulls this stunt, they should pack their bags and never come back, taking all the overpaid primadonna actors with them. The studios and networks should start hiring non-union actors and tell the rest of them to go F themselves.

We can make do with old movies and reality shows.

Hey SAG leaders...do you not read the papers...ah there is an economic crisis going on. You aren't the only ones impacted by a strike. I live in LA, I know plenty of the little people that MAKE you actors successful that will be out of work when YOU go on strike. Already I personally know a set designer, lighting tech, and the gofers that get you food and clean up after that already have been layed off due to the economy. Now is not the time to strike, all that will happen is the movie/tv industry will expedite their move to Canada and other countries and take the industry support jobs with them. I gotta tell you, I stopped watching plenty of TV shows during the writers strike and never went back to many of them when it was over. The quality of TV and movies just continues to deteriorate....so go ahead, go on strike. I'll just read and go rent foreign films where the stories are not formula all the time, and it's actually not about the ACTORS, it's about the ENTERTAINMENT. Go on strike guys, it will be your nail in the coffin of Hollywood as far as I'm concerned.

The great part is that less than 5% of SAG members are even regularly working actors, and less than 1% are the famous millionaires, so the other 95% of members who only work on and off have absolutely no problem voting to strike and to picket! They lose nothing because they aren't working anyway!

It's a myth to think SAG is all rich Hollywood elites, I bet SAG has the lowest average salarly of any prominent union.

Anyone thinking of striking in this economy is crazy. And its gonna get worse before it get better. I don't even watch TV. Its like all of the plots come out of a big machine that splices up the stuff that I Love Lucy did. And then there is a second machine that mixes up who will be sleeping with whom for the next couple of weeks. New ideas? Only on HBO.

Already grossly overpaid actors asking for even more money during a recession.

What a disgrace.

Peering through your cryptic veil, I think I see an underappreciated actor. It's possible that your quest for fame and riches has been thwarted by your lack of talent.

But would you see any rise in income if SAG won the dispute?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:44 AM on 11/22/2008

Whoa, whoa. Youre misinformed. Much of SAG members consist of actors of things like commercials, PSAs, bit parts. That sort of stuff. People that squeak by without having to get a temp clerk job. This is MUCH less about hollywood porsche drivers (many of them don't need a union). Think blue collar actors and less like white collar actors---not exactly but a good way to look at it.

But let's not be concerned about the domino affect on those of us working stiffs. We are not actors. We will not benefit from your contract negotiations. But we will suffer from your strike.

SAG has acted recklessly during this whole negotiation process, they continue to think they can negotiate a better deal for themselves than every other labor union or guild has gotten so far. Quite simply, they are being unrealistic about their demands. They have too drama to this whole negotiation process and have not acted like smart professionals in resolving their differences. Negotiations are not all about what you want or demand, the other side has limits to what it can give too.
Although not grabbing many headlines currently, Hollywood and it's workers are already suffering. Since June feature production has been reduced to a mere trickle of what it normally is, the studios are reluctant to green light any feature productions which would be under a SAG contract for fear of a strike. As a result tens of thousands of industry workers are affected by a 'de facto' strike. The reality of an actual 'sanctioned' strike is the last thing that Hollywood or the greater LA community needs right now. It seems unlikely that SAG will be able to muster the support needed for a strike from it's members, similar to how it's SAG / AFTRA members voted against the SAG leadership in favor of ratifying the AFTRA / AMPTP deal earlier this year.
It's time for the SAG leaders to wake up, take a reading to the current economic climate and gracefully accept the fair deal that they have already been offered so we can ALL get back to

What's the point, people get attached to watching certain shows like Eli Stone, then you find out it's cancelled. Because the networks want a higher rating share shows aren't given enough time to find a audience. This show came about during the last strike and wasn't really advertised or pushed like the few chosen shows the industry wants to protect. Now they want to strike again??? What a way to really turn the public off. The whole industry is going down the tubes. The movies being put out aren't exactly major blockbusters material either. These people need to stop this and focus on putting out better product so that they can keep the public interested in investing in movies and tv. I find I watch Youtube more now than I watch TV. They need to get a clue quick.

Toally wreckless negotiating by SAG's board. This not only affects the actors, who for most of whom acting is a part time second job, but it also holds the members of 7 other unions hostage to their petty demands. Now is the worst time to strike and after last years disasterous 100 day strike by the WGA they will find NO SUPPORT from this Teamster or anyone else I kinow in the industry! Shame on SAG for going in without a realistic plan!
