Barack Obama is leaning towards appointing former deputy national security adviser Jim Steinberg as his Deputy Secretary of State, a well-connected Democratic source tells the Huffington Post.

The potential appointment of Steinberg -- an Obama adviser during the campaign, respected voice on international affairs, and Clinton-era national security official -- is significant for a variety of reasons, none more so than what it could mean for the department as a whole.

With Sen. Hillary Clinton reportedly set to accept the job of Secretary of State, questions have surrounded which other figures would fill out the staff. Steinberg is not a Clinton loyalist -- like, say, Richard Holbrooke -- having counseled Obama during the primary. He is well regarded throughout the party, known, as his former Brookings Institute colleague Michael O'Hanlon put it, as "an incredible networker, but someone who masters the substance as well." According to the New York Times, Clinton had been "reassured" by Obama that she "could select her own staff" as Secretary of State.

Steinberg has been rumored to be in the running for the post of national security adviser. Should he end up at State, that would almost certainly clear the NSA path for retired four-star general and former Marine commandant Jim Jones, who has been discussed as the frontrunner for the spot regardless.

Two other names that were once floated for that post no longer appear to be in the running. Greg Craig has taken the job of counsel to the president. Susan Rice, one of Obama's chief foreign policy aides on the campaign trail, has been thought to being heading towards an advisory role, a deputy position at the National Security Council, or the post of ambassador to the United Nations.

A former Clinton aide, discussing the construct of an Obama cabinet, noted that Craig and Rice were two of the most vocal critics of Sen. Clinton's foreign policy capacity and gravitas during the Democratic primary. It didn't seem coincidental, the source said, that they would not be working alongside Clinton in the future administration.

There are still many questions that surround Clinton's appointment to State, not least of which include when she will formally accept the appointment. On Sunday, the New York Times filled in some of the blanks, reporting that Clinton would be given direct access to the president if she went to Foggy Bottom -- a vital sticking point for the New York Democrat. What type of agreements Bill Clinton had to make during the vetting process still remain hazy, as does the question of what role (if any) he would play with his wife as the nation's chief diplomat.

Why does every article begin with "A well connected source says" or "an un-named source says."

It makes little difference who else Obama appoints to the state department if he appoints Hillary. It is simply a bad choice that will overshadow his entire Presidency.

It's such a disappointment (and to many a slap in the face) to those who worked so hard to elect him.

If they started it with "We just pulled this out of our (blank)," people might be suspicious... even if that's the case.

I will never forget the look on Barack face during his rally in Florida with Bill Clinton last month.Bill went off script and said Barack asked his economic advisers tell him what the problem is and he will "sell it" plus it was too complicated for him. That told me more than any thing I wouldnt have this guy with in shouting distance of any thing I cared for.But Barack I am sure is weighing the plus/minus of this 2 for 1 with Hillary and decided to take a chance.

What you call a** kissing is actually diplomacy. Obama is doing EXACTLY what he said he was going to do. Can't figure out why so many of you are whining this early in the game. Your pessimism is so NOT productive! Can't figure out what you expected and where you expected him to get his staff. It sounds like your disappointed that he hasn't contacted you personally for your recommendations. Just get over yourselves.

susan Rice is an ace who has earned a position in the new Administration. She is very smart and a sharp advocate whose many appearances on news shows as an Obama surrogate punctured holes into Hillary's experience narrative.

On another matter, Samantha Power should get a position somewhere and that her calling Hillary a monster will not be used to keep her out of the Obama administration. Both Rice and Power would fill out the team of people in the Foreign Policy team no matter who is at the top.

There is enough interventionists, neo-cons, and plain out militarists on either side. None of the people who were right for the last eight years are even within site of being selected. No one who doesn't have blood on their hands for their shameless advocacy of genocidal wars. This is not just disappointing but a straight up betrayal. Obama is combining the worst of Clinton and Bush on economic and military matters.

The Empire marches on. How sad, but not surprising.

They are converts to him. One of the biggest reasons I supported Barack in the primaries is because all the people who knew the Clintons best, the people who had worked closely with them, were choosing Obama.

Al-Quaeda is in Afghanistan; that is where Obama intends to concentrate our forces. What part of this do you have a problem with?

For that matter, let's impeach, indict, and punish Dick Cheney for sending all East Coast air defense into war games on Sept 11, after, less than a month earlier, he and Shrub had seen a memo telling them what Bin Laden was going to do.

Iraq had nothing to do with 9 11 and everything to do with Halliburton getting in there to steal oil. Do your homework.

I am sorry O's foreign policy team is a bunch of rubbish. Deniss Ross, James Steinberg, Hillary Clinton, a bunch of hawkish, genocidal people. If he keeps current Rice's team it would be more dovish. It is as if people's vote did not matter, and perpetual war will go on.

Change not only comes from the outside, but also the inside, meaning our own attitude towards change and how we define it. From some of the comments I surmised that change means something "brand new" or who they perceive define change for them. They willingly negate any personal re-evaluation, growth, or possible new influence on held positions or views from anyone deemed part of the "old" or "same" as change. Instead they continue to use their same rules and ideas held for or against the person based on who was in this position or that, and what they did then. So you are right as long as people hold onto who was associated with who and have no personal openness of self change in how they view and define other.

You guys on the hard left projected your pacifist beliefs onto Obama when he never had them. When he opposed the Iraq war in 2002, he said that "he wasn't opposed to all wars, just dumb ones." During the campaign he supported military action against Al Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan. You might not like it, but he was very clear about it, so get used to it.

And by the way, Dennis Ross got very close to an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord in the final days of the Clinton presidency. He's the right guy to try to get it back on track.

I hope this means all those foreign policy folks who supported Obama---some at a risk to having no career if Clintons won the Presidency---are not being dumped to take on Hillary. She is famous for maintaining her clique of followers, valuing loyalty over talent, and prefering flattery to honesty. She also is a very poor manager and a bit disorganized.

I had hoped to see a newer direction a la Susan Rice and Samantha Powers. What are their chances and those of all the others who have supported Obama? Do they face having the door to a Clinton fiefdom slammed in their faces?

I had hoped we would have a professional foreign service, not one that is dominated by the beneficiaries of Clinton patronage.

President Obama is going to go with moderates in his cabinet, keep increasing defense spending, and have a Clinton Cabinet Version 2.0. President Obama will let the Bush tax custs phase out instead of changing them immediately, will not close Gitmo for at least 2 years, keep troops in Iraq, add a few more troops to Afghanastan, stay with status quo on gay marriage (remember he is against it), let Detroit automakers go into bankruptcy (because that is what is best) and scatter appointments to appease his liberal base in less than critical areas. And this is all a good thing.
