STUART, Fla. — A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities said he was "passing gas" and turning off his classmates' computers. According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 13-year-old boy "continually disrupted his classroom environment" by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

The Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested Nov. 4.

A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

When a story like this comes along, I'm reminded of how much I miss George Carlin. He could have done 15 minutes on this without even trying.

It's not George Carlin, but try using your imagination. In honor of George, here ya go:

"So does this mean when he grows up and applies for a job, and the application asks 'Have you ever been convicted of a crime' the kid has to answer: 'Yes. Farting.'"

"When the police arrest him in the future and phone in to check his rap sheet, will they decide 'maybe we shouldn't put him in the back seat of our squad car after all.'"

"And is this one of those 'gateway' criminal activities? He starts with misdemeanor farting and then moves on to felony crapping his pants?" ;-)

We miss George.

International flatulation club (PHART) sent their president, Vladimir Putin (poot - in), to review the case. He made a few recomendations-

1. Lay off the sauerkraut and pork and beans for breakfast.
2. Paddle the crap out the little brat, his parents, the teacher and the arresting cop (KGB style).
3. Next time the kid has gas, learn how to keep it quiet (code name SBD) and blame it on the prettiest girl in class.

In other news, the world is headed to heck and a handbasket....

While this site is famous for misleading headlines, this does not seem to be one of them.

Very 1984ish title

descriptive of nothing

A school resource officer is a COP at the school. Only cops can file charges. Minors are usually released to their parents after arrest for minor charges.

"School resource officers" are real police officers. They are sworn in, carry a badge, weapon, and can and do arrest just like any other police officer.

And that's what makes this story so insane. There's actually a signed criminal report from the arresting officer filed with the Martin County Sheriff's office.

The kid was charged with "Disruption of a School Function" apparently by using a bodily function.

And yet those who are looting the U.S. treasury, even as we speak, will go free (provided they refrain from tooting in Martin County that is).

I don't think "arrested" means the same thing in this context as it does in the usual context, or else it wouldn't be followed with "and was released to his mother."

Just sounds like bad reporting is inflating "kid gets kicked out of class for being disruptive" (not news) to "child arrested for farting" (news.)

Okay, let me get this straight. A CHILD is disruptive in school. That CHILD is ARRESTED, that means cuffed, booked, fingerprinted. That CHILD has a record for . . . passing wind and misbehaving. I am old enough to remember when that kind of behavior meant DETENTION of the after school variety. What on earth is going on with schools that being a kid is criminal behavior.

I shouldn't be surprised, this is the same state where a 6 year old was arrested for tearing down decorations at school and "frightening" her adult teacher with a tantrum.

Sometimes, home schooling doesn't seem like such a bad idea when these types of decision makers are what pass for educators in Florida!

Uhh....

Where in the article did it say the kid was cuffed, booked, and fingerprinted? This kind of thing happens all the time in schools to scare exceptionally bad kids. They basically took him to a police office in the school and called his parents. Relax, it happened to me once in high school, no charges are filed, and there is no criminal record.

Instead of attacking the school and educators, maybe some of the blame should be focused on the parents.

Your correct it starts with the parents but even they may not know what is happening at school. The point is that there are so many more pressing matters that need attention at school that this is a little hard to agree with.

I am constantly surprised by peoples idiocy. To arrest a boy for being a boy granted a disruptive one, anyway for these things is idiocy. What the school should have done is take him out of class and have a in school supension, also talk to his parents and get some respect taught. I just do not understand where the country is at this point, we have lost our way. When I was a kid they would have called my mother and she would have delt with it severly. I would never have disrupted the class again. To arrest this boy is stupid. What will they do if he gets in a fight or takes a book with out permision?

the headline is a tad misleading...anyways, the mother of the child should sue...this is total bs

Is there such a law? Why didn't the teacher and principal suspend the student or something? Why would the police even want to deal with this? People have become strange. I remember my days in school, we did much worse than this. What would they do if he was fighting in school, arrest him for attempted murder?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:08 PM on 11/25/2008

This happened in Florida, eh? I am kind of surprised, nothing moronic ever has happened in the past 8 years in Florida.

I could tell you that my 7th grader was suspended for passing wind last year, and there would be some truth in it, but it would not be the whole truth. The whole truth was that he did it repeatedly and then laughed every time, thus disrupting the class. On top of that he routinely neglected his assignments, talked too much, didn't pay attention and was generally disruptive (though never overtly disrespectful or destructive). I thought his school was a bit suspension happy, but what the heck, I was home and he certainly would not be harmed by extra time with his parent..

It could be that the school knew from experience that suspending the child would simply mean that he would be left home without parents and that the arrest was an effort to get the parents to wake up and take notice. This is the kind of story that makes for sintilating headlines and easy outrage--none of which helps the child, the classmates who must endure his conduct or anyone else.

The best solution is always in school suspension. Unfortunately, there is seldom money enough for those sorts of programs.
