STUART, Fla. — A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities said he was "passing gas" and turning off his classmates' computers. According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 13-year-old boy "continually disrupted his classroom environment" by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

The Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested Nov. 4.

A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

Arrested? Jeez, can someone just put the kid in detention? That principle needs to get that stick out of his butt.

He'll get off on a technicality. They questioned a minor without a parent present and they probably didn't read him his 'Miranda' rights. However under the 'Patriuot Act' they could declare him a 'terror suspect' for terrorizing his classmates and rendition him to Guantanamo or Syria where they REALLY torture and keep him forever. Are these people freakin' real? Why not eject him from school. suspend him and get on. Nothing like using a sledge hammer when a tack hammer will do.

They don't have to read him his rights in this case.
"Arrests can occur without questioning and without the Miranda warning—although if the police do change their mind and decide to interrogate the suspect, the warning must then be given."

Well if I had three wishes...the first two would be that Florida and Texas would revert back to Spain.

Lets sell Texas back to Mexico or Spain and pay off our national debt.

I'de like to see GA added to the list, but there are no takers.
"Deliverence" comes to mind, after two other posts on Hufpo today.

My vote is that the rest of the US secedes to form a brand new country, leaving Florida, Texas and Georgia with the national debt.

He was obviously wanting attention. He just didn't get the kind he was hoping for.

Don't you just know that the school has run the gambit of the different forms of non-corporal punishment. I wonder how many times his mother was called about his disruptive behavior and how many times she just replied, "There's nothing I can do." She's probably getting calls from Maury or Springer or someother freakshow host.

I wonder if his arrest could have been prevented if the school had been allowed to swat his rear-end with the kinds of paddles we had 30 years ago. And don't flame me over the paddling -- I'm not talking about bonking the kid on the head or giving him the kind of beat-down an angry parent would give. In the principal's office, (s)he explains why your getting a consequence and then you're told to assume the position. After getting your pops, you're told the next level of consquences if you don' correct the behavior. When it's administered this way, it is not considered child abuse.

Here's hoping he'll receive a fine and the mother will have to pay it. I'll bet she's slapping her forehead over not trucking him to Nebraska last week.

I think they should have taped his buttocks closed - now THAT would have taught him a lesson...:)

I am sorry but if somebody tried paddling me for passing gas, then I prolly would end up doing something to that person to get me arrested for a legitimate reason.

I don't know what kind of "paddling" you were subjected to, but I assume that it was intended to cause pain. No pain, no lesson, right? What lesson is really taught to a child when violence is used on them?

And don't try to say it was innocent "paddling." There is nothing innocent about an adult in a position of power over a child inflicting pain to make a "point." The point made is very clear. Do what I say or I will hurt you.

What type of future behavior would you expect from children who learn this lesson?

So, let's get this straight. The kid intentionally passed gas and turned off other students' PC's. Did the pungent cloud(s) turn off the PCs or were these two unrelated events? How did the authorities determine intention? So, many, many questions! An inquiring mind wants to know.

Humm.... Florida a state with the largest population of Senior Citizen population should hardly be worrying about and arresting people for passing gas.

That school is in Tim Mahoney's district ... you know the dude that pays his mistress with tax$$ ... maybe he should do his job so kids are not arrested for farting in school. Next thing ya know kids won't be allowed to blink at school.

sheeeesh, OK, disruption via "turning off computers" is bad...a bit of extra homework, janitorial work or even detention...but arrest? NO! gimme a break...

Passing wind...It is UN healthy to hold it...so have some chamomile tea or beano on hand...both stop the "unintentional wind turbulence"...I mean..It is the "force of gravity" defense, right?

"A bit of extra homework"? Excuse me that this is an example of why homework is seen as a negative to most students. Let's get this straight...from the teacher's perceptive ( I was a teacher for 34 years) homework is given as an extension of the classroom studies, not as a punishment. Completing the work outside the classroom in preparation for the next meeting,or as a means of assessing whether one's understanding the concept(s) taught during the class is the purpose of work assigned to be completed at some time other than during the time frame of the scheduled class.
I frowned on homework being assigned by a substitute teacher for unrudely behavior...a common practice. I would rather the student's name be left for me to deal with the problem. I might take some of my time but I know from my educational background that there are more effective punishments.
I agree " being arrested" is a bit harsh. I can think of a particular former student who would have been behind bars. Maybe I should include his name on one of those insult website now that he has graduated from college and in a professional position. I could refer to it as "delayed punishment." LOL
