STUART, Fla. — A student at a Florida school has been arrested after authorities said he was "passing gas" and turning off his classmates' computers. According to a report released Friday by the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the 13-year-old boy "continually disrupted his classroom environment" by intentionally breaking wind. He then shut off some computers other students were using.

The Spectrum Junior-Senior High School was arrested Nov. 4.

A school resource officer placed the boy under arrest after he confessed about his behavior, according to the report. He was charged with disruption of school function and released to his mother.

Thank God smoking is not allowed or the whole school might have been leveled.

How does one "intentionally" break wind? Burping, yes. But farting?

Any teacher should have the ability to handle a farting, disruptive kid w/out calling the police.

Yeah...with the state of our education system...THIS is important!
It is called.... "send him to the office",
for shutting down computers students are working off, and/or "dentention".
Call the parents in w/ the student and explain what their child was doing...
wasting time and interrupting other students education.
If the behavior continues....after a reprimand....then it's called..."suspension".
If the adults in the situation had handle this....GEE like ADULTS (??)
then 13 yr. old KID might not have a criminal record....for a 13 yr. old age appropriate PRANK!
Good god the people in charge are idiots!
which brings me back to the state of our education system.
Do you think that supposed educated teaching professionals
with this kind of intelligence....or lack of it...
problem solving skills or lack of them...
should be entrusted to TEACH our children???
And we wonder why johnny can't read?
unbelievable

Here is the problem with your little tirade. First of all people with attitudes like yours toward teachers are the reasons children do not respect teachers or any adults for that matter. Too many parents take this attitude toward teachers and they instill it in their children with their hateful comments such as the one you made. Then, when the child commits a minor classroom infraction, and the teacher calls the parent, nothing is done to discipline that child so he or she learns they have no boundaries. If teachers send children to the office, again nothing happens because these days you put a child in in-school suspension, the parents threaten the school. Don't even think about out-of-school suspension because parents will inevitably claim you are punishing them instead of the child and again threaten to go to the board. School boards are typically made up of parents who believe their children do no wrong instead of being made up of educators who know how a child should be disciplined in a classroom so sadly boards typically side with parents instead of educators. To me, it's not a prank when my child is unable to take advantage of free public education because some ill-mannered punk is constantly disrupting class. Johnny can't read because he doesn't want to try, he doesn't respect educators and his parents encourage it and they attack anyone who attempts to discipline him.

Let's hear more about this - or maybe let's not. But if we do, what else did the kid do? A kid farting in class for kicks to disrupt the class and turning off computers is grounds for a trip to the principal's office and detention. But, what if the kid refused to go to the office? What if the principal and teachers were ignored by the kid and he continued to disrupt the class? It happens and then what? Jerry Springer time all day long for everyone? No thanks.

Many schools have a police officer in the building, and if the kid ignored all other adults, the officer takes him out of the room. I've seen kids in school act like they're trying to make the Springer Show. Parents come in and act the same way, at times.

Let's hear the whole story before busting on the school admin and teachers.

unless this kid's farts were so toxic that the farts were turning off the computers there is no excuse for this idiocy. these teaching staff need to be shuffled off to the unemployment line.

what's next? detention for burps and sneezing?

that school must be a sad pathetic joke.

Unless the kid was committing an offense that could be classified as a crime, there's no reason I can think of to call the police. EXCEPT, some of the ludicrous laws that have been passed in recent years that prevent teachers from physically removing students from the class room if necessary. I don't mean beating or hitting them, but being able to grab them by the elbow, hand, belt or whatever is necessary to remove a disruptive student--take them to a detention room and call parents.

The no touch laws have made it impossible to handle students, because these kids know they have the upper hand. Sometimes the only alternative is to call someone who does have the authority to touch students.

(Notice, I started out disagreeing with you and ended up saying almost the same thing. We have painted ourselves into a corner with these stupid school rules and the extremely lax parenting that goes on these days. Too many kids are running the house in American families. Watch one of those Nanny shows. If our kids are allowed to act like that at home, how do you think they act at school?)

Great! We can arrest a 13-year-old for farting, but we can't impeach an imperialist president for dismantling the Constitution, allowing a great American city to die, torturing prisoners, and other sundry crimes.

You can blame both of these problems on Florida....

Come to think of it, Florida is just like this kid in some ways.

Only in Florida. It gets more ridicules by the day. We've become a police state. Cops are everywhere just waiting to arrest the petty offender. What I'd like to know is where are they when you need them, just off the top of my head I can think of about 500 politicians who should be arrested and thrown in the klinker right now.

What happened to an in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension before issuing an arrest warrant for a non-violent offense? Farting is an arrestable offense now? If so, they're gonna drag my husband out by his ankles

I was in a country & western dance hall when two guys either side of me kept smoking and blowing their exhaust my way. I squinted one eye and let one of those hot ones caused by popcorn and sauerkraut. Never had the first compunction about it. Cleared the hall of smokers, I'll say.

Police presence on school campuses keeps resulting in these incidents where minors are arrested for offenses best handled by school officials. If the officers are going to stay on the campuses they need to be better trained to show restraint in how minors are treated. Farting might be disruptive but its no crime.

If we can't get Bush for w.ar cr.imes, maybe we can nail him for that. Apparently, one of his little tricks used to be to slip into a crowded room, lay a "silent k.iller", and then sneakily exit....

Say that when you are next so someone that lets out one of those 'silent but d.ea.dl.y' farts. Also when a computer is shut off right when you are in the middle of writing an important paper. Yea yea, save your work. But its like the guy who never does anything about someone who keeps spiting on him... saying its the spitter who has the problem.
