LOS ANGELES — An Oregon man who was fatally shot as he wielded samurai swords and tried to attack guests at a landmark Scientology building was a former follower of the religion who had made at least a dozen previous threats against the church, officials said Monday.

Mario Majorski, 48, was shot once by a security guard as he tried to use the swords to attack guests Sunday at the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Hollywood, police said. Hundreds of people were eating brunch or doing other activities at the time, said Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis.

Majorski had threatened the church in incidents dating to at least 2005 that were reported to the Los Angeles Police Department, the FBI and Oregon authorities, Davis said. The threats were allegedly made through faxes and telephone calls, but police and the FBI could not immediately confirm how many were made.

"He was clearly disturbed," Davis said. "It's just a tragic incident. Our condolences go out to his family or friends."

Majorski had been a Scientologist in the early 1990s but appeared to have left the church about 15 years ago, Davis said.

The shooting will be reviewed by the district attorney's office, but police were treating the killing as justifiable.

"The security guard had to take action to prevent the deceased from killing or maiming people on the premises," Los Angeles police Detective Wendi Berndt said.

Security surveillance tape showed Majorski arriving around noon in a red convertible, then approaching the guards with a sword in each hand before he was shot, Berndt said. No other weapons were found in the car, which Berndt said she thought was a rental.

Majorski was pronounced dead at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

Public records show he was born in Los Angeles County and was associated with a string of addresses there and in Oregon, most recently living in Florence, Ore. He filed for bankruptcy in 2000.

Majorski called AAA after running out of gas on the road where he lived, Florence police reports show. The AAA driver, Doug Bushwar, described toy lined up in a row behind Majorski's truck, according to the police report.

When Bushwar approached, Majorski allegedly threatened him with an ax. He later threatened to shoot approaching police officers before running to his house, claiming there were hostages and explosives inside, according to the police report.

The two officers later arrested Majorski and found no hostages or explosives.

On Nov. 2, Majorski disrupted a Mormon church service in Florence by "cursing and moving around a lot," Florence police spokeswoman Sarah Huff said. Police arrested him on charges of disorderly conduct and criminal trespass.

Other Oregon arrest reports show Majorski was arrested for criminal trespass by the Eugene Police Department in May 2007, and the next month the Lane County Sheriff's Department arrested him for unlawful use of a weapon.

In 1993, Majorski and another man sued a University of California, Los Angeles, professor who had been speaking out against Scientology, Davis said. He said the men felt the professor was discriminating against them, but the case was found to have no standing and was dropped.

The Celebrity Centre is a turreted, castle-like landmark in Hollywood that serves as "a home for the artist, a place where he can come and learn, attend seminars, meet other artists and even perform at our many showcases and events," according to the Centre's Web site.

The Church of Scientology was established in 1945 by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard and claims 10 million members around the world. It likes to cultivate celebrity followers and among its more famed acolytes are Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

So RaisingAwareness isn't here today to ignore our questions about how much he paid to become superhuman after only one scientology session?

It's not often where a massacre gets thwarted that you actually find some people who seem a bit upset that it was. Wonder if someone should call the FBI.

Wonder if someone should point out that this commenter is a CoS drone

Maybe he went nuts just trying to get them to quit mailing him crap. Has anyone ever succeeded in getting off of the Church of Scientology's mailing list? They've been filling my recycle bin for 25 years...

When they have a self addressed stamped envelope, just send it back empty or better yet, send OT3 . they pay the postage afterall.

No OT3s answer the mail so now the lowly staff reader there will have to report to Ethics. And he/she will wonder forever if that really is OT3 ... which it is.

Let's see, hmmmm- how many church security guards have semi-automatic handguns.....Not any accept scientology- gee I wonder why no one has brought up this issue? Maybe because Sheriff Lee Baca is an uber-friendly scientology buddy. Probably no charges will be filed nor an investigation. This is BS!!

Raising Awarness will be in shortly. He is probably being Sec Checked ... again.

I guess tasering the guy was not an option when one has bullets.

Getting involved in Scientology did Mario a lot of good didn't it?

Celebrity Centre is a kind of creepy place at times. Just a phoney vibe going on there ... many wannabees and forced smiles.

I think you are right about Raising Awareness being sec checked. Scientology actually has a course and drills its followers on how to deal with the media. If RA was doing this on his own he probably got hauled into ethics. That is probably a good thing-maybe he will get a clue and jump ship.

Where is Raising Awareness? Yesterday, he wouldn't shut up; today, not one comment. Maybe he is busy on another OAS assignment or hasn't David Miscaviage told him what to post today.

It is clear that this individual was not a member of the current church. Before all of Hubbard's works were re-written, a lot of people spent a lot of money doing things the wrong way. Now with the GAT (Golden Age of Technology) these problems have been fixed and no one can be hurt or go crazy by applying their technology. When the technology fails it is not the fault of the technology; this individual must have had misunderstood words.

That's a joke, right? Not a very funny one either, Mr. "Miscav".

Say it ain't so since this site runs their ads. They must pay a pretty good chunk of change. What surprises me is that the so-called church hasn't demanded that this story be removed immediately or face the wrath of the so-church removing it's ad from this site.

Why would the church want the story removed? The church didn't kill him, he committed suicide. I don't see a problem with the church's security guards killing a wacked-out ex-member.

Hell, there might be a movie in this one.

Gotta be a Whole Lot More to this story.

I wanna know why the guy wasn't just tasered?

What was his beef? Why the swords? Just how involved was he with the CO$? Yup ... stay tuned ... someone is gonna spill some beans.

Movie? Dude, when I saw that headline, I thought Tom Cruise had gone nuts, taken his Last Samurai props down off the wall and gone on a rampage. Now THAT would make a great movie.

There's gonna be lots more info about this to come out over the next week or two.

Turns out Majorski was still active in mindbending cult in 2004.

In the early 1990's Majorski worked for the OSA (Office of Special Affairs) and cult lawyer Moxon had him enroll at USC in order to bring a lawsuit against the now deceased professor Dr. Jolly. The cult lawsuit was dismissed.

What did scientology and OSA do this poor fellow to push him over the edge? We know how much scientology hates pyschs and meds. :-(

Stay tuned and grab your popcorn.

He probably quit the silly organization and said some bad things about them and they in turn took him to court for some insignificant reason and brought him to financial ruin. That's how they operate. He was probably looking for revenge. Sad.

LOL That's a lot of probablys ... maybe he was just a nutter

He did some of the expensive L's Rundowns and was a member of IAS at one time.

They knew him well. Like so many who've quit the Cult, he realized he had been cheated but couldn't let it go more than likely. And CO$ ain't givin' no money back!

NO member can read this book ... written by L R Hubbard Jr who was there at the begining with his dad. Great data! Entire book is here and its free!
