Ann Coulter may be completely silenced, at least for a while.

If the New York Post's Page Six report is true, Coulter broke her jaw and her mouth is wired shut:

WE HEAR...THAT although we didn't think it would be possible to silence Ann Coulter, the leggy reaction- ary broke her jaw and the mouth that roared has been wired shut...

I do have to wonder----supposedly she sells large numbers of copies of her "books" (they are mostly just ad nauseum anti-liberal rants) each time she comes out with one---but I have asked my conservative friends and family members if they have any of her books---- none of them have ever bought any of her books--they do say they have read them--but did so by checking out a copy at their local library----I know I am only asking a limited number of people--but out of those I know that I asked or checked out their bookshelves, you would think at least one of them had bought at least one of her books--some of them do have books by O'Reilly, Rush and Hannity----- but none have her books--so my question is: who does buy her books??? Even among my conservative family and friends---everyone pretty much thinks she is pretty well inconsequential.

Rumors have abounded for years that righ wing think tanks and other orgainzations buy this trash in bulk, and books by Han-insanity and O'Really and the rest of this loathsome crowd, and articficially inflate sales to convince everyone there's a wave of support for their "ideas". It's baloney.

Ponderus,
I've bought and read three of her books. (In anticipation of your question: yes, conservatives can read.) I find them to be occasionally irresponsible and sometimes illogical--in other words, kind of like NPR. But someone like Thomas Sowell or Dinesh D'Souza--they can (and do) run rings around liberal inanity. Maybe you should try them.

I have read her books, only bought two (1 paperback and 1 book on tape for the car rride). I find her arguments to be interesting, and she tells a great story....

On that note, Great story tellers are few and far between. Theres a sports talk personality in Philadelphia named Angelo Cataldi, and while i don't agree with many of his positions on football/baseball (philly is a football/baseball town and he doesnt know too much) he tells an amazing story, which is his niche, much like Ann

Coulter is not the problem. She's just another slimy televangelist, in it for the money and willing to do damage to society in the process. The problem is our lack of courage in calling a lie a lie when we hear someone parroting her. The most effective response would be a sharp smack with a rolled up newspaper, accompanied by a strong verbal "NO". However, in keeping with political correctness, a polite "You are incorrect." would be a good start.

Not surprisingly, the Page Six story (and the link to it from Drudge), is little more than a press release for her upcoming screed. Did you know that liberals are bad?

I think it's telling that after being posted for several days, this post has only generated a few hundred--mostly quite civil--comments. This is the woman we used to love to hate...now she generates a huge yawn. At least among those of us whose jaw isn't wired shut...

Well, people on both side's of the political spectrum make many millions of dollars by speeches, interviews, books, newspaper columns etc.

Coulter may be restricted from using her voice, but I bet she may still publish books and write articles for newspapers, magazines, and online sites. Therefore, she will still make money by using her point of view while not even moving her lips, and people will buy it up.

It goes both ways, talking heads are all too prevalent and spew their viewpoints and try to use every moment they can to indoctrinate viewers, or cheap shot someone they don't like.

Unfortunately, this woman will still have a voice (metaphorically) beyond her actual voice.

Keep in mind. A pundit is nothing without an audience. Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity...they're in business only as long as their public wants them to be, and if one of them disappears, he or she will be immediately replaced so long as the target listeners exist.

Ann Coulter, herself, is of no importance whatever. Her importance is entirely supplied by those who are gratified by the things she says. You want her to go away? So do I. Talk to your friends. Talk to your parents. Talk to the very people in your life who have the most repellent opinions. Set them straight...or at least straighter. The hate begins and ends with us.

Your words ring so true and so clear without a political spin... your call to action could just as well be to the supporters of rush, etc. It is really important, in my view, that people understand their role in what is on the radio and television. Thank you for your post.

Very well put! I've become a fan of Year Zero.

We *must* muster the courage to say to others, "That's hateful", "That's unacceptable", "That's out of my comfort zone", "That's not Christian", or whatever else we must say to declare *our* values and put limits on those who would marginalize them.

Proposition 8 is Unconstitutional and completely wrong. So is Sectarian school prayer. Racially motivated crimes are wrong. Placing constraints on women's reproductive choices is wrong. Waterboarding, torturing war prisoners, golden parachutes for incompetent CEO''s on Wall Street are immoral and UnAmerican. Exxon's windfall profits in these difficult times are pornographic.

Coulter has built a career by appealing to the meanest, lowest common denominator in our society. That is wrong. She is irrelevant unless we empower her. Same for Hannity and Limbaugh. They are bottom feeders who, vampire-like, nourish themselves by sucking the blood of our Democracy for their own aggrandizement.

Although I would defend their right to express their ideas, their public posturing borders on the treasonous, as one who cries, "Fire!" in a crowded theater.

Wasn't it Ben Franklin who said, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately"? Let's support the President-Elect, at least until after the Inauguration and maybe for a little honeymoon afterwards, and let's give him and his Cabinet a chance to bail us out of the awful mess we're in.

The hate begins and ends with us. Well put.

You presuppose that she has "ideas" that merit a "thoughtful" response.

This is a true example of the logical fallacy of "begging the question," a phrase misused repeatedly by talking heads in the MSM.

I think her provo.c.r.a.p..tive rants merit neither thought nor response, but I seem to remember Al Franken's _Lies (And the Lying Liars Who Tell Them)_ had a section on Coulter and her fabrication of "facts."

Yes....Ann writes several columns for Human Events. But beware......thoughtful responses do not always apply! Some Liberals are just as nutty as conservatives are. And lets just say that ones thought process is not put "in pending" like it is here....so it may be a bit tasteless for you!

YZ- As long as I am alive I will buy Anns books, listen to Rush, Hannity, Laura Ingrahm. Why may you ask? Because of FREE SPEECH that the Constitution has allowed us as Americans to practice. I find that if I listen to those like Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, then listen to Bill O'reilley, Coulter, Limbaugh etc......I can then think for myself and determine what I want to believe....and it may be a mixture of the two sides. But for one group allowed to influence my thought patterns I am flirting with disaster. Others may do as they wish and I respect them for their opinions, but it is my belief that posts like yours would bring the 'Fairness Doctrine' back into play which in turn would limit TRUE FREE speech. To say that Ann is of no importance would be like YOU being of no importance. But I personally think BOTH of you and all Americans are important and should be able to make up their OWN minds on what they want to listen to. If one does not like the talk show hosts.....there is an OFF button on their TV or radio.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:09 AM on 11/28/2008

Don't those that practice under their Constitutional rights to free speech deserve the same respect you do when posting here? I like the talk radio hosts. Some of what they say is a bit over-the-line, but isn't some of what Keith Olbermann says over the line as well? There are haters on both sides of the isle. To say she is of no importance would be like saying you or I are of no importance either.....and I believe that all Americans are important. If one does not perceive ones comments to be true or hateful...they have the right to change the channel on the television or radio they are listening to. I form my opinions on matters by listening to both sides not by what one side says only. The truth is often seen between the two.

I absolutely despise this excuse for a woman. She, along with Rush Limbaugh probably have the largest following of right wing nuts in this country. They spew out poison each and every day and get paid Millions for it. They seek to divide and destroy and not build. They have no answers for anything. They hide behind the freedom of speech amendment and do untold damage. As far as I'm concerned, people like these two should be carried to a cave on a distant island.

This whole business the Conservatives are making over the return of the Fairness Doctrine is nothing but
a Red Herring. I remember when the Fairness Doctrine was in effect and it didn't stop the likes of (on AM Radio)-Bob Grant, Barry Farber, John Gambling, & (on Television) Joe Pyne, Alan Burke etc. from spewing their right-wing bile over the public airwaves on a daily basis.

Uh, yeah... what about free bile speech... should we only listen to certain kinds of bile? Under the Fairness Doctrine, who gets to define the type of bile we're listening to? so counter-bile can be brought in to balance things out.

I can't bile-eve this idea is being sloshed around in 2008. Smells like something from Stalin's egalitarian Russia. Perhaps we should open some bile-cleansing camps up in northern Michigan to help our brethren know how to think.

Re: The Fairness Doctrine
I am as left wing as most of the rest of yall, but the fairness doctrine is a joke. Let the wing nuts have their AM radio for christ sakes, it's all they have to cling to at this point. It's already irrelevant and competes with countless other media. The more obsolete AM becomes the more desperate and pathetic the rantings will become, thereby hastening it's own demise. We still have NPR after all.

I've always wanted to ask someone this:

Let's say NPR is left wing, or perhaps just left of center. Yet they project the institution as an objective news source, with objective journalists... what do people think about the ethics of this in terms of advocating a political view / platform?

Don't get me wrong, I love NPR... It just seems that the right has no trouble coming out and saying 'we are the right'... yet NPR will not go that far. If they do, it's called 'air america' or 'pacifica' and then no one listens to it.

I agree...I think each media outlet shoud just come out and say what they are..the same way newspapers endorse candidates...
Why shouldn't they just say it?
What's wrong with that? People eventually figure it out anyway.

It goes like this: Rush's audience is the largest on record and growing. NPR, Pacifica, and Air America's collective audience does not come close in terms of size...

So the 'Fairness Doctrine' would force radio stations to play an opposing point of view that no one wants to listen to. Listeners would drop off, and the radio station would not be able to sell advertising time during the left's response to Rush.

The net effect is that radio stations would make less revenue by being forced to broadcast something nobody wants to listen to... which is why you find much of left wing radio on public stations that get govt subsidy. There's a reason Air America is failing... no public funding.

Cognitive dissidence.

From folks who claim to be nice, caring people, with tolerance for all of nature's creatures, it seems many are proud or unaware, of the the cruel and uncaring attitudes displayed towards others who simply do not share the same point of view.

Interesting.

When she called the Iraq war a "crusade" and said the following quote
"We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed too. Otherwise they will turn out to be outright traitors." -- Ann Coulter
Is when I stopped really caring. There is only so much someone can tolerate without thinking of that person as a hate-filled sociopath with nothing on her mind but sex and violence.

Well it is called by different names: Karma, "So as ye sow so shall ye reap", "Chickens coming home to roost", "what goes around comes around" etc.

But I am saddened at the possible loss of her vitriol in the sense that Coulter does for Repubs, neocons and Chickenhawks what Jaws I - III did for ocean bathing.
