I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Barbara Walters interviewed President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama for a Barbara Walters Special to air Wednesday night at 10pm. The interview covered, among other things, a potential bailout of the auto industry, bonuses for bank executives, and Obama's negotiations to retain his BlackBerry.

Watch a preview from "Good Morning America" below. Barbara Walters shares her thoughts on the Obamas — "They're very...I don't know how to put it, I don't want to gush. They're very cute, and they're very funny in this interview together" — with Robin Roberts as well:

When asked what was his "biggest fear," Obama said "there are a lot of things that keep me up at night."

"One of the concerns I have is that the economy is so weakened that the next 60 days are going to be difficult because we've got a president who, even though he may mean well, is now sort of in lame-duck status [and] Congress isn't in [session]."

"And I don't have the reins of power," Obama added.

Read excerpts from the interview below.

BARBARA WALTERS: How did you feel when you read about the three heads of the auto companies taking private planes to Washington?

BARACK OBAMA: Well, I thought maybe they're a little tone deaf to what's happening in America right now. And this has been a chronic problem, not just for the auto industry, I mean, we're sort of focused on them. But I think it's been a problem for the captains of industry generally. When people are pulling down hundred million dollar bonuses on Wall Street, and taking enormous risks with other people's money, that indicates a sense that you don't have any perspective on what's happening to ordinary Americans. When the auto makers are getting paid far more than their counterparts at Toyota, or at Honda, and yet they're losing money a lot faster than Japanese auto makers are, that tell me that they're not seeing what's going on out there, and one of the things I hope my presidency helps to usher in is a, a return to an ethic of responsibility. That if you're placed in a position of power, then you've got responsibilities to your workers. You've got a responsibility to your community. Your share holders. That if -- there's got to be a point where you say, 'You know what, I have enough, and now I'm in this position of responsibility, let me make sure that I'm doing right by people, and, and acting in a way that is responsible.' And that's true, by the way, for members of congress, that's true for the president, that's true for cabinet members, that's true for parents. I want all of us to start thinking a little bit more, not just about what's good for me, but let's start thinking about what's good for our children, what's good for our country. The more we do that, the better off we're going to be.

Story continues below

WALTERS: Should bank executives -- it's almost Christmas time -- forgo their bonuses?

OBAMA: I think they should. That's an example of taking responsibility. I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers, the least you can do is say, I'm willing to make some sacrifice as well, because I recognize that there are people who are a lot less well off, who are going through some pretty tough times.

WALTERS: How are you going to get along without your Blackberry?

OBAMA: (Laughs). This is a problem. I, you know, one of the things that I'm going to have to work through is how to break through the isolation ... the bubble that exists around the president. And I'm in the process of negotiating with the Secret Service, with lawyers, with White House staff ...

WALTERS: You might have a Blackberry?

OBAMA: Well, I'm, I'm negotiating to figure out how can I get information from outside of the 10 or 12 people who surround my office in the White House. Because, one of the worst things I think that could happen to a president is losing touch with what people are going through day to day.

How could someone not be excited about these two in the White House? After 8 years of hell, we're entitled to feel enthusiasm about competent leadership.

I just feel that all of the Federal officials are being hypocritical. Here they are, doling out hundreds of billions to the financial institutions, without telling them they need a "plan", and with hardly any critisizing of their executives. Yet when the auto execs are there, for LOANS, not bailouts like the banks are getting, and you have all these govt people lecturing them, while Congress can't even control it's own spending, in fact, they are running the govt worse that the auto companies are being run. I feel Obama is really being hypocritical. That is why I didn't vote for him, nor McCain, but gave my vote for Nader again. Nader would be a President who would actually care about, and look out for, the "common" people of this country, not just all the BIG MONEY, of which includes corporations as well as individuals.

The more people like barbara "gushes" when discussing Obama, the less people will be able to keep their heads about themselves and ask questions that really need to be asked. Grant it, he is not sworn in yet so these types of cutsie reviews might be acceptable but does get a little sickening. Not taking anything away from Obama, its the medias problem.

At some point being treated like a celeb will be demeaning to Obama and take away any cred he may have or gain in the position as president.

The media that gushes now may just be the ones who undermine his great leadership by treating him like a rockstar rather than the President. And what will Babs have to contribute then?

Hey, you guys voted for him based on his good looks, so you might as well stop complaining. If you had any sense, you might have tried harder to get Kucinninch or Nader into the White House.

thanks but we didnt want either of them, we wanted Obama.

My only complaint with this Barbara Walters interview was her decision, in discussing threats on Obama's safety, to give national exposure to the reprehensible magazine cover (or whatever it was) depicting a rifle scope on Obama and the phrase "Shoot this N******" I mean, was it really necessary to expose thoughtful viewers, or even potential nutjobs, to such incendiary swill? It marred an otherwise great discussion and reminded me how Walters is never above presenting the sensationalistic, even in inappropriate contexts.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:22 PM on 11/28/2008

So would you rather that thoughtful viewers were never "exposed" to the swill? How else will they get an idea of how low the opposition will stoop? Obtaining such a perspective is critical, for taking your opponents seriously, which is the prerequisite for countering their hate-filled nonsense.

If we try to preserve an envelope of civility, by simply keeping such unpleasantness at arm's length, we fall into the very trap that's being laid out for us. We'll underestimate both the fear and hate being exploited by the fear and hate mongers, and we'll underestimate the willingness of the mongers to do their dirty work.

Propaganda grows in the dark. The best way to neutralize it, is to expose it on all levels. This means not only pointing out its flawed "logic" in detail, but also showing how hateful its practice is. Go Barbara!

Michelle and Barack will soon be on the Hottest Couple Lists if this adoration goes on. Fairly portrayed I think. Read: How Michelle O. and Beyonce Put A Ring On It - http://newsone.blackplanet.com/nation/opinion-how-michelle-o-and-beyonce-put-a-ring-on-it/

I just finished a book that was a real eye-opener for me. YOUR GOVERNMENT FAILED YOU by Richard A. Clarke, who has been in several administrations.

He tells of how the career military put 20-25 years into their careers, gained invaluable experience and tried to share it with Bush et al. If they or the CIA or others disagreed with Bush, they were canned. Promotions gone, stature gone...all for trying to show Bush, through their military expertise, that we should not go into Iraq without more troops and an exit plan.

I am encouraged that Obama seems to want to hear differing opinions. It makes perfect sense to me
to bring in experience. And the Pres calls the shots - if they don't stick to his vision, they will be gone.

I almost forgot the subject of this post - THEY ARE CUTE AND FUNNY!

Let's change the accountability rules for major news media. Fox won a 2003 Florida court ruling that permits them and other news broadcasters to disseminate misleading and untrue information in their news programming. We can fight back by pushing for a consumer oriented news quality rating system.

CeaseSPIN.org has an FCC News Quality Rating System petition that you can sign. It pushes for rules requiring newsmakers to rate their news and display on-air symbols that indicate whether they followed ethical journalistic guidelines or not. It's a non-partisan, anti-censorship alternative to the Fairness Doctrine.

I still remember how I was "on pins and needles" a few weeks before the election. For the first time in my adult life, I really wanted Obama to be our President (I never cared about any other Presidential elections). I could not do a thing. I am working all day Thankgivings Day to catch up and still happy. I told my husband before it would be funny if the US would elect a President with a middle name "Hussein"! I was worried, until I heard the joke from Obama about his middle name (was given by someone who did not think that he would run for President one day)! Now I am so happy. I believe in our great country because we voted for him and we believe in him. I pray that God will protect him and his family for 8 years (being selfish here for myself, the country, and the world) and throughout their life, so that he can help us rebuild America. A talent and a good heart like Obama is rare. As a mother, I could feel that he truly cares! Even after Obama finishes his 2x4-year Presidency terms, he will continue to positively contribute to America and the world. How exciting is our time with Obama.

From what we have seen of Bush over the past week, Obama is already the president, at least unofficially. W seems to be on vacation again, and Barack has already held more news conferences than Bush has managed in a couple of years. He shows a genuine work ethic, something we have not seen in the past eight years. It's nice to have a full-time president again.

You should have cared about 2004.

We wouldn't be in this mess if Kerry had been elected.

It was obvious Bush had us halfway in a ditch with Iraq and the deficit, and he only needed another four years to complete the job.

I am just so happy that my 7-year old son has President Barack Obama to look up to when he grows up. Just pure happiness. He did not have to learn in history books about a great US President. He is seeing his great President with his very own eyes, and hear his voices, and can judge his talent, too. With Barack, we can leave our son a great future in 8 years! I am also happy that all children will benefit from the Obama presidency.

Damn if you do, Damn if you don't. What is clear from reading this blog is that #1- the majority of Americans are fair and objective. #2- From reading the comments of those critical of the interview it is clear that there are some people that lack the capacity to be objective.

It is important that We the People listen to what Obama has to say and NOT what the media has to say about Obama. Every time we listen to the media they spin his words into something unrecognizable. Gratefully Obama has been speaking to the public in some capacity every day. WTP have the opportunity to decide for ourselves just what is being said. The Walters interview was a good one and I heard to of his pressers. We have a President Elect who is talking to WTP.
