I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Barbara Walters interviewed President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama for a Barbara Walters Special to air Wednesday night at 10pm. The interview covered, among other things, a potential bailout of the auto industry, bonuses for bank executives, and Obama's negotiations to retain his BlackBerry.

Watch a preview from "Good Morning America" below. Barbara Walters shares her thoughts on the Obamas — "They're very...I don't know how to put it, I don't want to gush. They're very cute, and they're very funny in this interview together" — with Robin Roberts as well:

When asked what was his "biggest fear," Obama said "there are a lot of things that keep me up at night."

"One of the concerns I have is that the economy is so weakened that the next 60 days are going to be difficult because we've got a president who, even though he may mean well, is now sort of in lame-duck status [and] Congress isn't in [session]."

"And I don't have the reins of power," Obama added.

Read excerpts from the interview below.

BARBARA WALTERS: How did you feel when you read about the three heads of the auto companies taking private planes to Washington?

BARACK OBAMA: Well, I thought maybe they're a little tone deaf to what's happening in America right now. And this has been a chronic problem, not just for the auto industry, I mean, we're sort of focused on them. But I think it's been a problem for the captains of industry generally. When people are pulling down hundred million dollar bonuses on Wall Street, and taking enormous risks with other people's money, that indicates a sense that you don't have any perspective on what's happening to ordinary Americans. When the auto makers are getting paid far more than their counterparts at Toyota, or at Honda, and yet they're losing money a lot faster than Japanese auto makers are, that tell me that they're not seeing what's going on out there, and one of the things I hope my presidency helps to usher in is a, a return to an ethic of responsibility. That if you're placed in a position of power, then you've got responsibilities to your workers. You've got a responsibility to your community. Your share holders. That if -- there's got to be a point where you say, 'You know what, I have enough, and now I'm in this position of responsibility, let me make sure that I'm doing right by people, and, and acting in a way that is responsible.' And that's true, by the way, for members of congress, that's true for the president, that's true for cabinet members, that's true for parents. I want all of us to start thinking a little bit more, not just about what's good for me, but let's start thinking about what's good for our children, what's good for our country. The more we do that, the better off we're going to be.

WALTERS: Should bank executives -- it's almost Christmas time -- forgo their bonuses?

OBAMA: I think they should. That's an example of taking responsibility. I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers, the least you can do is say, I'm willing to make some sacrifice as well, because I recognize that there are people who are a lot less well off, who are going through some pretty tough times.

WALTERS: How are you going to get along without your Blackberry?

OBAMA: (Laughs). This is a problem. I, you know, one of the things that I'm going to have to work through is how to break through the isolation ... the bubble that exists around the president. And I'm in the process of negotiating with the Secret Service, with lawyers, with White House staff ...

WALTERS: You might have a Blackberry?

OBAMA: Well, I'm, I'm negotiating to figure out how can I get information from outside of the 10 or 12 people who surround my office in the White House. Because, one of the worst things I think that could happen to a president is losing touch with what people are going through day to day.

Thank God that we are blessed with The Obamas as the next First Family, they have know poverty and how to work to overcome it and yet treasure scholarship and common decency to other people.

I hope that President Obama and Michelle can continue to "re-distribute" their compassion for others, their value of intelligency and science, their value of community-reliance and love of the least amongs us.

The world is lucky to be led by "That One" who is extremey smart, deeply caring for the people, respectful of his wife, handsome, and yet very comfortable to be surrounded by others who may know better than him on different subjects.

I am looking foward to the next eight years

When I go to bed tonight I wish when I get up that it is Jan. 20th! I can't wait for PE Obama can take the reins and start getting to work of fixing all the messes we are in. Obviously Bush's parents never taught him to work at his job until the end and not just go thru the motions for 6mos. what a joke. After Bush I can't believe that some Rep think that Palin could do the job and that they would want to go back to what we have now, incompetence.

Yeah, Stuck... Running the economy, building infrastructure - all jobs we turn over to the private sector.

Oh yeah, we did. For eight years.

Experiment unsuccessful. Back to Plan A. Ever consider that the US had it's longest run of prosperity (1946-1968) when taxes at the top tax rates were three times what they are now and the government exerted far more control over banks, industries and mergers and acquisitions?

The Republican view now seems to be that, apart from the wars, the wrecked economy, tearing up Constitutional protections, destroying American scientific research, having Big Oil rewriting environmental rules, the overstressed military, having the highest unemployment rate in decades, watching millions of people losing their homes, banks failing, the big three automakers about to go bankrupt and that whole Katrina episode that showed that the "Homeland Security" emperor really had no clothes, things are going swimmingly.

The government, Stuck, is us. We pay for it, and we have been encouraged not to demand value for the money paid, even as billionaires get huge tax breaks that inevitably shifted the tax burden more onto the folks who weren't already sheltering their funds offshore. The American people are back, they're pissed, and we want our country back.

We tried it your way, and it didn't work. Now live with the result.

We love Obama; we adore him. And I mean this sincerely. I have felt such euphoria over the election. What I worry about is that as a nation, we have been so starved for decency and intellect in our leaders, that he is now our savior. The subject of so much collective projection. How unrealistic are we being in our expectations? Will reality make cynics out of the hopeful?

Belief.

I believe.

So yes, it starts with a simple belief in self for he will not be able to accomplish anything alone. It will take a village to raise this nation.

"Cute and funny?" Barbara Walters summation of President-elect Barack Obama & his wife Michelle. I've never heard Ms. Walters refer to any other couple (much less the future president & wife) as "cute and funny." I'm just not sure why some people seem to think blacks are supposed to be "cute and funny." Barack and Michelle are a nice-looking couple, a loving couple, a dynamic couple, an intellectual couple. Is that the best description she could come up with? I think it's offensive and she could have done better. I'm disappointed in her, but, then again, I shouldn't be. It's par for the course.

There is nothing wrong with being described as cute and funny. You guys need to check your own reasons for blowing this out of proportion.

Some people look for anything to bit ch about.

chill out. cute and funny is not offensive. at least not the way she said it. i could not sense any intention to be derogatory which i think is what you are implying. please reserve the bile for halperin and coulter. comments like this lend credence to belief among the wingnuts that obama is being deified by some people.

i don't mind being described as cute and funny and i'm black.

Perhaps! I personally don't want the description of "cute and funny" attached to the Obama's going into the White House, lighthearted would have been better. Serious times call for serious descriptions. It might be okay with you, you're not the president.

I made this same comment a while back and got hammered for it.

I feel "cute and funny" disparaged and demeaned what these two people represent.....they may be cute and funny it's true, but that is w-a-a-a-a-y-y-y-y down on the list of their attributes, not primary attributes ascribed to them by Walters. When was the last time a president or former senator has been described by Walters or anyone else in the media as "cute"??

Kids and pets are cute, not this high powered couple.

It's not that Obama seems too good to be true, it's that we can't believe there is a really a truly decent and intelligent man that's about to become our new President and we're still in disbelief about it. In fact, I think Obama's probably too good to be our President. I wouldn't wish the job he has ahead of him on my worst enemy.

Of all the things he's said in this interview this is the most important:

"one of the worst things I think that could happen to a president is losing touch with what people are going through day to day."

Does anyone realize just how smart that comment was? A President who has the self-awareness to be afraid that his White House isolation may threaten his sense of reality? Amazing.

I don't care what any of you naysayers write about him. He's a remarkable person and I think we should all just cut him some slack and let him TRY to clean-up some of the carnage the Bush Administration left behind.

Isn't it a shame that we are amazed at a president-elect who actually has our country and its people in his heart and mind when making decisions as president? That issue aside, however, I feel that Obama and his staff can work miracles. What we've forgotten is that a nation like ours that is governed through intelligence, competence and goodwill versus corruption and incompetence, is truly the most powerful nation on earth.

We can overcome the hateful, Obama's win has already revealed that point. If people want to stay in their cesspool, let them. They are not happy people anyway. They want something to hate. It fuels them.

They are in the minority. Their voices are merely amplified through Fox and AM Radio. They need to learn that their policies have failed. Their hatefulness has not been vindicated.

They are scared and greedy, opps, I mean greedy and/or scared.

Obama is very organized and intelligent. He sees the small and big picture and wants to have the complete picture to understand how he should govern.

Obama actually is incredible. I pray for him and his family and this country. I'm not normally a very prayerful person. I believe he can rally this country to do great things. Things we've needed for decades.

He might actually save US from ourselves.

Thank you for putting it so clearly, sawdust.

Undoubtedly Obama feels in his heart all the pain of the country, we needn't worry about his motives and his intentions.
He is going to do what a good man would do.
He is going to do the right thing.
He knows the truth just as well as we do. Thats why he's there.
Upon Jan 20th, we'll open the Obama box and he will go to work. They are "going to hit the ground running" so we can expect 100 days of Reality News that we are going to be glued to.
You're right sawdust, a tremendous amount can be done once you cut away the cobwebs and let in the sunlight.

I thought the same thing about his concerns about losing touch with the people. But the fact that he's worried about it says to me that he won't let it happen. It's what makes him so special. His connection to real people and the real world is what sets him apart from the super-rich that have been running our country. The Obamas are ordinary people you might live near, work with or see at a PTA meeting.
