I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Barbara Walters interviewed President-elect Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama for a Barbara Walters Special to air Wednesday night at 10pm. The interview covered, among other things, a potential bailout of the auto industry, bonuses for bank executives, and Obama's negotiations to retain his BlackBerry.

Watch a preview from "Good Morning America" below. Barbara Walters shares her thoughts on the Obamas — "They're very...I don't know how to put it, I don't want to gush. They're very cute, and they're very funny in this interview together" — with Robin Roberts as well:

When asked what was his "biggest fear," Obama said "there are a lot of things that keep me up at night."

"One of the concerns I have is that the economy is so weakened that the next 60 days are going to be difficult because we've got a president who, even though he may mean well, is now sort of in lame-duck status [and] Congress isn't in [session]."

"And I don't have the reins of power," Obama added.

Read excerpts from the interview below.

BARBARA WALTERS: How did you feel when you read about the three heads of the auto companies taking private planes to Washington?

BARACK OBAMA: Well, I thought maybe they're a little tone deaf to what's happening in America right now. And this has been a chronic problem, not just for the auto industry, I mean, we're sort of focused on them. But I think it's been a problem for the captains of industry generally. When people are pulling down hundred million dollar bonuses on Wall Street, and taking enormous risks with other people's money, that indicates a sense that you don't have any perspective on what's happening to ordinary Americans. When the auto makers are getting paid far more than their counterparts at Toyota, or at Honda, and yet they're losing money a lot faster than Japanese auto makers are, that tell me that they're not seeing what's going on out there, and one of the things I hope my presidency helps to usher in is a, a return to an ethic of responsibility. That if you're placed in a position of power, then you've got responsibilities to your workers. You've got a responsibility to your community. Your share holders. That if -- there's got to be a point where you say, 'You know what, I have enough, and now I'm in this position of responsibility, let me make sure that I'm doing right by people, and, and acting in a way that is responsible.' And that's true, by the way, for members of congress, that's true for the president, that's true for cabinet members, that's true for parents. I want all of us to start thinking a little bit more, not just about what's good for me, but let's start thinking about what's good for our children, what's good for our country. The more we do that, the better off we're going to be.

Story continues below

WALTERS: Should bank executives -- it's almost Christmas time -- forgo their bonuses?

OBAMA: I think they should. That's an example of taking responsibility. I think that if you are already worth tens of millions of dollars, and you are having to lay off workers, the least you can do is say, I'm willing to make some sacrifice as well, because I recognize that there are people who are a lot less well off, who are going through some pretty tough times.

WALTERS: How are you going to get along without your Blackberry?

OBAMA: (Laughs). This is a problem. I, you know, one of the things that I'm going to have to work through is how to break through the isolation ... the bubble that exists around the president. And I'm in the process of negotiating with the Secret Service, with lawyers, with White House staff ...

WALTERS: You might have a Blackberry?

OBAMA: Well, I'm, I'm negotiating to figure out how can I get information from outside of the 10 or 12 people who surround my office in the White House. Because, one of the worst things I think that could happen to a president is losing touch with what people are going through day to day.

Generalizations about a centrist shift, or worse a rightie shift, don't help a lot. Specifics are more important. So here are two. First, it appears from Obama and Emanuel interviews that there may not be the immediate repeal of the Bush tax cuts for the rich. Second, there is now back pedaling on Justice Dept. investigations, and possible prosecutions, with respect to the flood of Bush/Cheney administration crimes. This makes me wonder: if the Bush tax cuts were not a rip-off of middle America, what is?; and, if those apparent administration crimes do not warrant a prosecutorial investigation, what does? This smells like Reid and Pelosi all over again. Will the Bushies reign forever?

I read this post and then i laughed, and laughed and laughed some more... this poor fo.ol wants more "experience".

Like the kind of experience D.ick Che.ney, Don.ald Rums.feld, Rich.ard Pearle and Paul Wol.fowitz have? A lifetime in government, and still hopelessly clueless. Responsible for the worst foreign and domestic policy decisions in a generation.

Please, mcarmaniac, please keep posting. It's so refreshing (and entertaining) to stumble across someone so willing to make a complete fo.ol of him (or herself) for the amusement of others...

Thanks for my morning laugh! This will probably keep my chuckling all day...

What should keep him up at night is losing the support of his Progressive base should his policies shift away from the theme of Change (that got him elected) to the theme of Republican-Lite. If that happens, it will be a very short honeymoon. I'm not passing judgment yet, and he still has my support (the fact that he actually COMMUNICATES is very refreshing, and definitely a change), but after 100 days in office there should be a clear picture of how far to the right he will shift.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:34 AM on 11/27/2008

And this is why Democrats lose so many elections. Why are we so afraid of our own shadows? He just got elected 3 weeks ago, and we're already complaining he may be "Republican-Lite"? Unreal. he wants universal health insurance, an end to the war in Iraq, and a new energy economy based on renewable sources that will help stop global warming. That sounds so very "Republican," doesn't it?

I disagree. A bigger reason Democrats lose "so many" elections is because since Reagan, they have been afraid to be Democrats. People like Reid, Pelosi and various "Blue Dogs" have allowed the party to be (rightfully) branded with the label of cowardice and capitulation to the big Republican bullies. Not to mention people like Lieberman who smirkingly betray their own party and get rewarded for it. Being "Centrist" and appealing to all people has never worked and it never will work. Once the honeymoon is over, Republicans are going to hate Obama just as much as they did Clinton, who also played the Centrist strategy.

Americans overwhelmingly want to be OUT of Iraq (not by some cautious, overextended timetable). Americans overwhelmingly want Universal Health Care. Americans don't want to see the banks who brought our country to near-financial ruin bailed out. Obama ran on a platform of change, and he has an overwhelmingly Democratic Congress. There'd better be no backpedalling now about "change".

I think what's confusing to so many people is that he doesn't fit any mold; left, right, center, progressive, libertarian, conservative, liberal, etc., ad nauseum.

That's the change. He's listening to the people. ALL of them.

Some progressive ideas will win. Some conservative ideas may carry the day. In the end, it's about leadership for the diversity of 306 million people. All Americans.

As he has pointed out 53% of the people voted for him. He will be president of 100% and isn't going to ignore people because of their ideology or political affiliation.

I totally agree with your post. People (some) are having a hard time trying to fit him into the mold that they want him to fit in and it's just not the case. You want someone that can listen to all ideas, all people.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:12 AM on 11/27/2008

sure, he says he's listening. I hear that word a lot. I also hear "reasonable" and "Common Sense" and "change" and all of this good stuff

He's also voted FOR the Patriot act extension
He's also voted FOR the FISA warrantless wiretapping bill
He's also voted FOR the 7 Billion bailout, which is actually now 5 Trillion

He hasn't indicated any sort of progressive thinking with his cabinet picks.

He has a WARHAWK as a Chief of Staff. This guy wants to Bomb Iran, Expand Afghanistan, and invade Pakistan.

His Attorney General wants to censor the internet.

He has called for a million man civillian "army". One that would spy on neighbors and families.

How is this progressive. HOW?!?!!??

He is just the charismatic celebrity spokesman of a machine that has no intention of changing course. WAKE UP

As someone who is progressive who bothered to read Obama's books I don't get all the pontificating I am seeing by some on the left. The change Obama talked about was how politics are conducted and building consensus so something gets done. He never promised to be Ralph Nader.

The Audacity of Hope makes this clear. Obama is very progressive in some of his thinking but the overriding vision is one of competence and respect and finding common ground. Anyone who thought differently was projecting.

I am thrilled with the guy. I think he is exactly as advertised and he makes me hopeful that all opinions and voices will be heard in this administration; that he will be president of all the United States instead of behaving like the nutjob Bush administration who thought they were president of their base.

As one who considers myself a Progressive, I believe his Progressive base is intact, at least if Progressive means one who wants to move the country forward. If, on the other hand, you interpret Progressive to mean far left-wing, then perhaps you will be disappointed because President-Elect Obama has never presented himself as a far left-wing candidate nor as one who will be a far left-wing President.

For 8 years, President Bush led our nation under a far right-wing agenda, and it was a disaster! Yet, it would be no less of a disaster if Obama led our nation under a far left-wing agenda. Bush's agenda drove us into the ditch on the right side, and a far left-wing agenda would merely drive us into the ditch on the left side, and neither of these agendas will move us forward.

Obama has not shifted to the left or right. He's been consistent in his agenda and his vision for America. It's not his appointees who will make the difference in his administration; it will be President-Elect Obama who will make the difference. HE will set the tone and the agenda for his administration, and they'll serve HIM at HIS pleasure. Those who either expect him to appoint only far-left people to his cabinet, or question him when he appoints people with right-leaning views, didn't understand his theme of Change when he was running and/or don't understand it now.

First off, "Progressive" does not mean "Left". It means someone who looks to the future and is not beholding to the failed policies of the past. Second, the appointment of Timothy Geithner is deeply troubling to anyone who knows anything at all about Timothy Geithner. He was one of the individuals MOST responsible for the crisis we are in. Geithner was a terrible pick and obviously not a stupid pick because Obama's not stupid. Geither is a crook. So WHY did Obama pick him? If anyone else replies to this, I'd like to hear a clear answer to that specific question and not a "You are a Leftist and hate Obama" spiel.

That's funny, it seems to be Hillary who is setting the tone for who gets to be Secretary of State. She's got him in a corner now. After her people intentionally leaked false information that she "had the nod" to be SOS, his hands seem to be tied on the matter and it's inevitable that she will get the position. I'm not saying she would be a bad SOS, but it's interesting how this worked out.

And as for the "serve HIM at HIS pleasure" crap, please leave it outside the door. One "royal" Presidency has been enough, and I'm sure Obama is well aware that he has been chosen to serve US, not himself.

What contrast between the Obamas and the Bushes. There is a certain tranquility with a lack of the nervous, twitchy, uncertainty that we always saw in W and Laura. She was a bit more grounded than he was (is). She is definitely the brains of the couple.
The interaction between Barak and Michelle is so real and sweet that you can't help but feel that they are wonderful caring, people. I watch them like many people watched Princess Di and other curiosities. Watching the Obamas gives me a sense of a tomorrow will be better than today and we finally have a real leader, not a DICKtator.
It's going to be alright, now. I can feel it.
We have a lot to be thankful, this year.
I'm very proud of the Obama Administration, already.
Hail to the Chief!

I haven't seen anyone post anything close to Princess Di....I have to say every since election night (if not before) I have often thought of them in the royal way of Princess Di and her two sons...I get this feeling that the Obamas are our new royal family and that we love them for years to come even after his time in office. I just absolutely love this couple. They seem so common but yet he is going to in control of this country.
