Rachael Ray Denies Cancer Rumors, Talks About Upcoming Voice Surgery

Rachael Ray is known for her outsized personality, but the TV chef and talk show host is planning an uncharacteristically quiet Christmas celebration this year.

"I'm having voice surgery on Dec. 16, so we're going to celebrate very quietly," Ray, 40, confessed at Rosie's Gala, a charity event hosted by Rosie O'Donnell on Monday night.

And contrary to earlier reports, the surgery is not risky - or related to throat cancer. "It's fine, it's just a little bump," said Ray. "I need to get rid of it though."

In October, Ray's rep described the procedure as "very minor surgery to remove a benign cyst on her vocal cord."

Do you ever have those days when you talk a little more than you're used to, and the next day your throat feels strained? Rachael Ray talks too much every day of her life, to be sure. And laughs too much. The human throat was not designed for that type of abuse. Neither were my ears, but I digress.

She needs to tone down her constant stream of talking, cackling, etc. I don't mean to be unkind, but I bet this problem will recur if she doesn't make some kind of adjustments to her schedule, and especially to the amount of words she utters in a day.

For a while RR has been sounding like she's been up all night with a fifth of Jack and a carton of Pall Malls. I hope she will work with a vocal coach after her surgery to learn how to protect her voice.

Who knows what she is like off camera. But for someone who doesn't cook, I enjoy her show not because I learn a damn thing, but because she makes cooking fun to watch. Lord this sounds weird, but I do watch if I notice her program.

I like Rachel Ray, but enough with this dance. They aren't taking this bump off her vocal cords for fun. I think there is some chance that it might alter her voice, etc. So, its not routine. Knowing doctors, they are probably telling her its likely benign, even if they really think its cancer.

However, if it is cancer, I think she should say so. I'm not into her being hurt, but I am tired of people falling for the old axiom that cancer is some sort of character flaw. If she secretly smokes, well, just another example that we all should NOT be following. Not a sin - just a bad personal choice (and don't we all have those!).

We are SLOWLY beginning to talk about breast cancer without people snickering or getting flustered. Its a disease. Get over it. We are starting to have people live a normal lifespan as cancer survivors. One of these days we will move on to prostate cancer without men looking at the floor (at least I think that's what they're looking at). Everytime prominent people deny and hide they have cancer, we perpetuate the fear and disinformation about this diease.

It is a sad statement on the public and the media that these rumors are allowed to continue. She has a nodule from vocal abuse. Hands get them from hard work...when you do not vocalize properly over a long period of time you get this result. When children get them we call them screamers nodules.

Remember, after her surgery she will be required to have complete vocal rest for a couple of weeks then....she will have voice therapy to learn how to vocalize correctly. If she follows through yes indeed her voice will not be the same. It will become normal in pitch, quality, loudness levels and in the ability to sustain phonation. Right now all are way off. Voice problems are very difficult to correct only because people do not follow through. They have the surgery, all is well as the nodule/cyst is gone and.....they go right back to their pattern of vocal abuse and in time...wallllllla another nodule.

Sad that the media knows this (as the gal showed herself getting her evaluation to make the rumors go away) yet still reports such stories.

I really like Rachel I think shes a nice person but as far as her cooking thats a talent I really don't think that she has I think she was in the right place at the right time, If she could have a cooking show I should be able to have one I can cook very good and have been told so by many. She did a thing on her show about her surgery and it's not cancer and she's not denying anything. I've had two friends that had to have this same surgery and it works great.
