Report: Clinton Camp Fabricated Initial Obama "Offer"

In the New York Review of Books, Elizabeth Drew sheds some more light on the behind-the-scenes wrangling between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over the Secretary of State post:

Obama's meetings with Hillary Clinton and John McCain about playing important roles in his presidency indicated his imagination and his shrewdness, although sources close to Obama say he did not offer her the job of secretary of state when they met. He had said during the campaign that he wanted various views in his government, and in turning to his own former competitors, Obama was at the same time magnanimous and seeking to keep them close. Both were in a position to cause him difficulty in the Senate--Clinton, in particular, had kept her constituency intact (through HillPAC) and was planning her own Senate agenda, including her own health care program, no matter what Obama proposed. But Clinton lacks the seniority, and therefore a committee position from which to get her proposals taken up by the Senate. (She tried to get a special subcommittee appointed, but Edward M. Kennedy, who has his own health care plan and is chairman of the committee with jurisdiction over the issue, blocked her, offering her later a role concerning health insurance.) McCain had indicated that he wanted to help Obama in the Senate, and by taking him up on it, Obama has both flattered and coopted him.

Mrs. Clinton's and her closest advisers' turning a suggestion by the President-elect that she might, among other things, head the State Department into an "offer" and reports that she was agonizing over whether to accept it, did not please officials in Chicago, some of whom hoped that issues over disclosure of Bill Clinton's post-presidential record might block the appointment. But the former president's camp blocked that by promising to cooperate with requests for information and to accept limits on his activities, including clearance of speaking engagements abroad. Statements by the Hilary camp on November 21 saying that "she's ready" for the position but then backtracking, saying that some matters were "under discussion," typified the whole mess, the only snag thus far in an otherwise unusually smooth transition involving impressive choices--an object lesson to Obama (which he had reason to know already) that getting involved with the Clintons is rarely uncomplicated.

As usual the media has a slow day so lets jump the Clintons and lets make stuff up to make them look bad. Please state peoples names when making acusations like this. Oh you cant? I see how this works. My God, he has said several times now, that he had her in mind along time ago for SOS and that comes straight form Obama. See how easy that was.

That's right blame the media. Perhaps if they didn't give them things to report, they wouldn't have anything to report.

How many former presidents are still talking about the fact that they were president? They've moved on. But Bill apparently can't get over it and keeps tossing that in our faces. I can see Obama not being pleased with the leaks, and they know that the Clinton's cannot pass being vetted. They can BE vetted, but they cannot PASS it.

So, as the article said, to counter it Bill tosses out "to the media" that he is in compliance. Do they use the media when it's convenient for them, but when it's not, it's the media fault?

Obama said Hillary would work best in healthcare and Kennedy has a position for her THERE. How would it look to the world, that we send someone that said "Obliterate Iran" to talk on our behalf?

She wanted Bush to boycott the China Olympics! China? We do a lot of business with China, so send the person who was shot at in Bosnia (via her own lie); send the person who said do away with Iran; and send the person that wants to disrespect China. That's just great!! How would we look, behind something like that.

There are many people in the U.S. that are qualified to be SoS. Hillary isn't one of them because again, they cannot PASS being vetted. I know it, you know it, and the world knows it.

>"Bill apparently can't get over it and keeps tossing that in our faces."?

Solution: Never mention he was President (most recent Democrat, two terms, record expansion, budget surplus). That should relieve you of your obsession disorder.

>"We do a lot of business with China..."?

Solution: Ignore their human rights abuses... since they have us over the Junior Bush 'debt barrel', our butts raised to the sunlight. Yeah... just pretend. What's more important than money, anyway?

>"How would we look, behind something like that."?

Not as if we're cringing and willing to sell our souls... like you.

>"I can see Obama not being pleased with the leaks..."?

"Several news outlets reported last night that the New York senator was under consideration for secretary of state. The outlets ALL QUOTED UNNAMED OBAMA ADVISORS. The Clinton camp refused to comment on the possibility." -- Newsday.com, 11/14/08

> "Obliterate Iran"?

Repeat a LIE often enough... it's still a LIE.

"... asked what she would do if Iran attacked Israel with nuclear weapons... She replied: "[if] they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them"... both she and Obama have said on the campaign trail they would like to begin fresh negotiations with Tehran..."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/apr/23/hillaryclinton.iran

Clinton's statement was a conditional warning of U.S. CAPACITY to retaliate rather than a direct nuclear threat.

See how easy THAT was, Sparky?

I see a lot of people like to make stuff on this blog.

Do Obama supporters ever base any of their ridiculous claims on something called "fact"?

The Clintons are a greasy bunch....however Wild Bill was an excellent President. Despite the total lack of any character or morals Bill did do a "bang-up" job. Slight emphasis on the bang. I really wanted to see Hillary tackle health care.

"bang-up" job.

NIce way of trying to demean his presidency.

It will take a lot more than disrespectful jokes from a dolt on the HF Post to that.

Greasy bunch?

Once again poor Hill needed to try to steal the limelight .

Her whole campaign was a fabrication.
Still Praying for someone else for SOS !!!!!
I feel the Clintons are not the choice for this appointment !!!!!!!!!!!!

All I can say is that the Clintons could not force BO to take her as VP, and I doubt that he was force to take her as SOS, because BO is no fool.

I really think this story and especially the supposed "drama" is a media-invented story. Obama would not pick her if he didn't want to do it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:43 AM on 11/27/2008

I agree. I think, and have said this before, that this is all an effort to fill the void in the post-election period. The media is just stirring this up. Wonder why there is such a need to put every little sliver of a story under a microscope? Controversy does more to sell papers and magazines, and to bring traffic to a site than any thing else.

President-Elect Obama knows what he's doing, and everyone needs to let him do the job we "hired" him to do, and that job doesn't even start until 20 January 2009.

You know, it would be interesting to see what would happen if we weren't all at each other's throats for once. When are we all going to get with the idea that we're "Americans" and we're all in this together?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:23 AM on 11/27/2008

Clinton drama is not media-invented. This nation has lived with it for 20 years, a constant, needless distraction. Nothing the Clintons contribute to the nation compares in magnitude to the division, distortion and controversy they produce.

"Obama would not pick her if he didn't want to do it."

I haven't heard Obama say anything. Who said he picked her? Hillary? There were only two at the meeting and last time I checked, Obama said those who "LEAK" are out. If he didn't say it, and there's was just one other person at the meeting, then Hillary is the leak. As usual.

I think she lied to make herself look important. As usual.

I think she's trying to FRONT in front of those who saw her lose the election. She had her people thinking she was going to win. To save face, did she lie about being offered a position?

"One week ago the former primary rivals met to discuss the idea of Clinton becoming the nation's top diplomat.

and who is surprised by the political avarice of the Clintons?

it is a well documented fact that the Clintons will do what ever it takes to satiate their their thirst for political aggrandizement

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:42 PM on 11/26/2008

Think about this. How many politicians are there? Too many to count. And who's the ONLY ONE all tied up in drama? Hillary Clinton. What has happened is we have a couple who used to be important and the fact of the matter is, they no longer are.

In order to remain "somewhat" important, they MUST BE a part of the presidency they fought so hard to prevent. Nobody else is into all this drama. The first week Obama was naming people, all was quiet. He was moving along smoothly and then WHAM! Here comes Bill and Hillary and it's been drama ever since.

If I were Obama I'd remain silent too because if he speaks that means he's going along with their drama. He's president because of calmness not hyper ventilation. What we see is similar to a ship sinking. The Clinton's are of no more importance, Hillary thought for sure she'd be president, but wasn't.

On the way, she tore people down. She attacked families, she went after anybody that stood in her way. What I'm witnessing is a couple struggling to stay afloat, so much that they'd rather bow down to Obama, than keep what they have.

If they are a part of his presidency, then that means their names will get mentioned. Leave Hillary where she is, and nobody will hear much from her. I almost feel sorry for them, conjuring up an imaginary base that left when she lost the nomination.

She is good, I'll give her that. Those two are REALLY good at manipulation. Ruthless.
I think a lot of the "sexist attacks" on her during the campaign were B face stuff to manipulate women. Dirty, dirty.

Unfortunately, the Clinton quest for power has now become an international influence peddling business that has made them mega millionaires, and must be fed by controversies that keep them in the limelight. With the Dept of State as a power base, they have unlimited opportunity to sow discord, produce drama, and feed their greed.

Yeah... the Clinton camp "fabricated" the offer.

... if that makes the diehard whiners happy.

You are correct, HIllary's team leaked the news of the meeting, and morphed a preliminary discussion into a "job offer."

Any thinkiing person understands the difference in a "job interview" and a "job offer." Unless of course you are Hillary trying to manipulate an appointment to save face and recover stature from losing the primary and being passed over tor the VP.

Why has serving the Clintons' substantial egos become a national priority? We need to put the Clintons and Bushes in the past, and move on.

Sure, and other "reports" are saying that the Obama team leaked the offer and put Clinton in a PR bind where she would have looked bad declining his magnanimous offer, thus trapping her in a subordinate position at State. Wherever there are Clintons involved, there's bound to be at least two sides to the story, excluding the truth.

GOT BILL UNDER CONTROL, NOW THAT OBAMA'S TEAM HAS TO GIVE APPROVAL FOR ANYTHING BILL WANTS TO DO FROM NOW ON. OBAMA LET THEM KNOW THAT THE CLINTON'S ARE NOT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY----------HE IS!

This is a clear cut way to get Hillary out of the picture, once and for all. NICE GOING, OBAMA! :-)

Yes sir, President Obama. President Obama, what did you say you wanted me to do? Yes sir, I'll get on it right away.

Ahhhh. Justice is sweet! If I were Obama, I'd get rid of her after a week, and send her home with Bill, for good. There is no way I'd give up a guaranteed job to be suckering up to the person that beat me.

And they're so smart. Riiiiiight.
