In the New York Review of Books, Elizabeth Drew sheds some more light on the behind-the-scenes wrangling between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over the Secretary of State post:

Obama's meetings with Hillary Clinton and John McCain about playing important roles in his presidency indicated his imagination and his shrewdness, although sources close to Obama say he did not offer her the job of secretary of state when they met. He had said during the campaign that he wanted various views in his government, and in turning to his own former competitors, Obama was at the same time magnanimous and seeking to keep them close. Both were in a position to cause him difficulty in the Senate--Clinton, in particular, had kept her constituency intact (through HillPAC) and was planning her own Senate agenda, including her own health care program, no matter what Obama proposed. But Clinton lacks the seniority, and therefore a committee position from which to get her proposals taken up by the Senate. (She tried to get a special subcommittee appointed, but Edward M. Kennedy, who has his own health care plan and is chairman of the committee with jurisdiction over the issue, blocked her, offering her later a role concerning health insurance.) McCain had indicated that he wanted to help Obama in the Senate, and by taking him up on it, Obama has both flattered and coopted him.

Mrs. Clinton's and her closest advisers' turning a suggestion by the President-elect that she might, among other things, head the State Department into an "offer" and reports that she was agonizing over whether to accept it, did not please officials in Chicago, some of whom hoped that issues over disclosure of Bill Clinton's post-presidential record might block the appointment. But the former president's camp blocked that by promising to cooperate with requests for information and to accept limits on his activities, including clearance of speaking engagements abroad. Statements by the Hilary camp on November 21 saying that "she's ready" for the position but then backtracking, saying that some matters were "under discussion," typified the whole mess, the only snag thus far in an otherwise unusually smooth transition involving impressive choices--an object lesson to Obama (which he had reason to know already) that getting involved with the Clintons is rarely uncomplicated.

Is it too late to take back the offer?

If it takes this long to solidify Clinton's appointment, how will anything ever get done in the State Department?

So the Huffington Post is denigrating Obama now, painting him as a patsy, not his own man, incapable of releasing a simple statement to the effect that no offer has been made, incapable of understanding that inviting Senator Clinton to Chicago would be taken as a public signal that the rumors were true. It's all a diabolical scheme of "the Clintons."

People ask what Clinton hatred is-- this is what it looks like.

Bingo. My exact thoughts - obviously the people around here care so much about putting the Clintons down with unsourced rumors that it doesn't matter that they make Obama look dumber than Dubya.

When did pointing out a piece of information ever become denigration?

Oh yeah, after you a Democrat got elected.

How ignorant and partisan of you.

Not all "pieces of information" are credible. Journalists can spin events that took place out of the public eye. Their accounts are often filled with rumor, misunderstandings, and willful distortion. The choice to carry this particular "piece of information" reveals a hatred of the Clintons so deep that it is willing to denigrate Obama as a patsy, so long as Clinton can be portrayed as a villainess.
The most powerful man in the world is helpless because someone supposedly put out false information? The President-elect is "forced" to appoint someone Secretary of State simply because the rumor is out ther? That claim is a denigration. It implies that the man in question is a weakling, unable to make his own decisions, the pawn of mere rumor mongers!
Thankfully it is evident that Obama is not a weakling. He is a TRUE strategic thinker, because his words and actions are based on careful thought and analysis, rather than being the product of ignorance and partisanship.

The piece of information you must be referring to is the phrase "although sources close to Obama say he did not offer her the job of secretary of state when they met."

1. That statement is not credible because it gives no source and likely is used to support the Clint*n-hating HufP*'s overall goal of riling people like us up for traffic which equals ad revenue for HufP*

2. Even if true, the meeting could have easily been just for information gathering about her possibility of having the job, without officially offering her the job. That is a far reach to the tone and point of the article above that HRC fabricated an offer. Besides, now that we know an official offer has been made, we can be sure that her in the role of SOS was indeed discussed at the meeting in Chicago and not just a need to keep her close since they have met countless times and she has campaigned heavily for him.

3. No one knows who leaked a possible offer. What we do know is that BO has to vet hundreds of people around each candidate he is looking to appointment. THAT is most likely where the leak came from.

4. Almost all the other appointments have been leaked as well and no one is alleging that those candidates were trying to FORCE BO to appointment them. Double standard be is sexism or simple irrational Clinton-hating.

The media is trying to sell newspapers and there is nothing to talk about until January 20, so they are going to create these dramas. First the McCain and Palin camps were fighting and now the Obama and Clinton camps are fighting. Let's not let the media punk us. Let's keep out party united and cooperative. That is the only way that we won this time and it will be the only way we will maintain control of this country.

Those of us who are still struggling against Hillary being included, need to relax and go with it, rather than fight against it. Hillary and Bill Clinton are going to be on the scene, no matter what. So let her be SoS, where I think she will be effective. Hillary is a seasoned, tough politician and we shouldn't want to throw away her years of experience on the world stage.

Obama is not stupid and he knows the challenges he faces when dealing with the Clintons. But, dismiss her he can't. She would be a far worse adversary is he were to dismiss her than she would as a member of his inner circle. Outside the circle she would try to make sure Obama looked bad so her 2012 run would gain momentum. This way, as SoS, if she makes Obama look bad then the Republicans win in 2012 and she's out also. I think she might have a plan to run for POTUS again in 2016.

Sorry but I just don't think that Obama would take kindly to being bullied into anything. Especially something as important as his Sec. of State pick. I don't buy it. I think this story is bogus.

If this story is true, and sadly it's totally believable, then Clinton has basically painted Obama into a corner and put him on the spot. How scary is it that she would continue to use her old tactics to manipulate her way into a SECSTATE job. I don't know what to think about this one.

It sounds pretty dubious to me. Obama's a pretty savvy politician himself. He doesn't sound like someone who could get duped like that into giving the most important cabinet position to someone he doesn't want.

And if he is, then maybe we do need Hillary up there with him.

Obama is the decider, he cant be "painted" in to a corner, a lot of this is conspiratorial nonsense. Obama will be in control of his White House and his team-of-rivals will wear his collars; they will work at the pleasure of the president.

Well said.

Hu*po wants ratings and there is nothing like a riling up the Clinton haters and Clinton defenders to blog, increase their blog ratings and increase the advertising dollars they can make.

This...we get a drummed up bs story based on NO journalistic evidence. Additionally, the only groups creating drama is the media to make $ and the Clinton haters.

Finally, almost ALL appointments have been leaked but only HRC is villified and the people leaking are the may people AROUND the candidates that have to be vetted--NOT BOs team and NOT Clinton's team in this case. They have to vet hundres and thousands of people around the candidate and that's how this stuff gets out.

That's why it's President Elect Barack Obama and not President Elect Hillary Clinton.

Article One, Section Six of the U.S. Constitution says:

No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.

Nonetheless, it has happened several times in the pasted; there is precedent. If she is confirmed by the Senate she will be Secretary of State and not a potential rival in the senate.

Obama doesn't strike me as the type to go against the Constitution. He said he would overrule the actions of Bush that were against the Constitution so would it make any sense that a person toss out constitutional violations of another, and commit violations himself?

If there is a clause that prohibits Hillary from serving, then she is prohibited from serving. You can't turn a saucer into a plate. No rules should be bent if she cannot serve.

I don't believe he offered her a position. I believe he was sitting down discussing things with her, and her make-believe mind ran away with the conversation and stated to others what she wanted them to "think" he said. If it were just Obama and Hillary, then that could only mean one thing

One of them LIED about what the meeting was about. We look at who has a history of lying and there you have it. Hillary Clinton is not a believable woman. No one would ever forget being shot at and running with their heads ducked. I'd remember it and so would everybody else. Who would forget their lives being in danger.

She simply lied and got caught. If Monica hadn't had that blue dress, then Bill would have stuck to his lie, and if the tape of that Bosnia trip wasn't available Hillary would have stuck to her lie. They only admit to lies when provided with undisputable proof of their lies.

...and Clinton's good buddy, Andrea Mitchell was an accomplice. And she lied about it being Obama's people.

Anyone that's been paying attention for the past 2 years, knows this was not the work of Obama personnel.

And, yet, they let it go unchecked for a week? David Axelrod all but confirmed that there had been serious talks.

Not only that, but are you telling me that we just elected a guy who basically got duped into giving away a top-level cabinet position?? I don't think so.

Obama and his personnel bested two of the toughest political machines. I think they are more than capable of handling themselves.

According to 0bama's"good buddy" KO, it was two 0bama advisors who "leaked the initial story, although he doesn't know about subsequent "leaks"..

"I'll emphasize again here that some of today's stuff could easily have leaked from the C/inton side of the equation, but yesterday's key reporting (Mitchell's story about the President-Elect considering Senator C/int0n for Secretary of State, and the possibility of meeting) was sourced very clearly: two advisors to 0bama."

I would be totally unsurprised if Clinton created it, leaked it, and thereby backed Obama into a corner about it.

Ridiculous... HRC would do well to talk to ALL former SOSs. That's a way BO plans to govern--get all viewpoints on the table in front of him and then make decisions. Did you miss that part of BO's campaign?
