Clinton

In the New York Review of Books, Elizabeth Drew sheds some more light on the behind-the-scenes wrangling between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama over the Secretary of State post:

Obama's meetings with Hillary Clinton and John McCain about playing important roles in his presidency indicated his imagination and his shrewdness, although sources close to Obama say he did not offer her the job of secretary of state when they met. He had said during the campaign that he wanted various views in his government, and in turning to his own former competitors, Obama was at the same time magnanimous and seeking to keep them close. Both were in a position to cause him difficulty in the Senate--Clinton, in particular, had kept her constituency intact (through HillPAC) and was planning her own Senate agenda, including her own health care program, no matter what Obama proposed. But Clinton lacks the seniority, and therefore a committee position from which to get her proposals taken up by the Senate. (She tried to get a special subcommittee appointed, but Edward M. Kennedy, who has his own health care plan and is chairman of the committee with jurisdiction over the issue, blocked her, offering her later a role concerning health insurance.) McCain had indicated that he wanted to help Obama in the Senate, and by taking him up on it, Obama has both flattered and coopted him.

Mrs. Clinton's and her closest advisers' turning a suggestion by the President-elect that she might, among other things, head the State Department into an "offer" and reports that she was agonizing over whether to accept it, did not please officials in Chicago, some of whom hoped that issues over disclosure of Bill Clinton's post-presidential record might block the appointment. But the former president's camp blocked that by promising to cooperate with requests for information and to accept limits on his activities, including clearance of speaking engagements abroad. Statements by the Hilary camp on November 21 saying that "she's ready" for the position but then backtracking, saying that some matters were "under discussion," typified the whole mess, the only snag thus far in an otherwise unusually smooth transition involving impressive choices--an object lesson to Obama (which he had reason to know already) that getting involved with the Clintons is rarely uncomplicated.

Obama has shown himself to be incredibly naive in handling the clinton clasterfak.

Too bad she's constitutionally unable to fill the position.

All she has to do is accept a salary equal to her current and she will be in. Shouldn't be a big issue considering WJC's income.

It appears that the “slant” of Clinton articles largely portray them as villains not worthy of any kind of dignity. This, in turn, incites bloggers to amp up the ferocity of attacks upon the Clintons. At a time when we should ALL be focused upon the issues, instead we are focused upon character assassinations. These character assassinations feel no different than the hate that is spewed from the lips of the right-wing religious zealots who feel they are "entitled" to speak not just for themselves but for everyone else as well.

When we should come together, we are instead divisive. This is a chasm that will not be easily united. As much as my hope has been for a new beginning, I only see hate filling up that hope. It's a sad day when many of us who were willing to work for the betterment of our country are starting to become disillusioned. Who wants to support an agenda of hate? You say you don’t “hate” the Clintons but just want them to go away? Well, you speak from a dark side of the human condition—casting stones as if it was your calling in life—judging their every action over many, many years. Who among you is perfect? Obama is not perfect either, but he at least knows that none of us is infallible.

There were great discussions regarding universal health care, among other issues. Can’t we elevate to a higher road and stop this denigration of the Clintons?

no doubt in my mind that obama does not disrespect hillary but he does not want her in his cabinet. this this the media circus going on. there's no talk from vallerie garret, axelrod,or gibbs they all skirt around the issue. it a parlor game for the punits to guess who obama selects. the match with obama & hillary just does not fit they do not think alike for where he wants to the diplomacy. yes she campaigned for him she should have after all the damage she did to him during the primaries. i have no ill feelings for hillary but secretary of state that position does not have her name on it. obama will not let the clintons put him in a box . when he made an appearence with bill in fla he stated where he would put hillary.

Whether republican or democrat the media loves a story and they are trying to fill the time between now and the Inaguration festivities. So they go about creating drama. Hillary vs. anyone is always a fight that sells tickets.

Re: “Sure, HRC leaked the stories about the Daschle, Holder and Napolitano picks too?! All that insider access to the Obama team's decisions right?! And you know for a fact that she is a liar apparently! So it looks like a green light to continue to attack her”!

No I don't think she leaked stories about Dascle, Holder, Napolitano and maybe not even this one....But she's still a l* i a r . Her behavior throughout her campaign revealed that much ....it revealed her character in general (her willingness to fan the flames of racism at the expense of placing O's life at risk for a job regardless of how prestigious was unforgivable). It's old news now but it will never be forgotten...at least not by me.

Re” “How in the heck do you KNOW she lied/lies? Do you know her personally? Where do you get this information that you apparently believe wholeheartedly? Where's your proof?”....

How in the heck DON"T you KNOW? Wheree were you when the videos of her claiming to be under sniper were released and the actual footage of no sniper fire shown. Even SHE admitted that she "misspoke"....several times. How much daggone PROOF do you need? People's stubborn refusal to see the character of folks when it's right before their eyes is one of the reasons we've had Bush for 8 years!!!

Hmmmm, another hatchet job on Hillary. And Huffington Post puts this canard on top, and the lemmings are in full force with their anti-Hillary spears. Just who is this Elizabeth Drew? Could someone enlighten me on this because this Ms. Drew might be a big troll.

28 consecutive years of Bush/Clinton have led us to where we are today. Obama picking so many Clinton people along with old gaurd Republican military people signals no change at all. If he caps it off with Hillary as SoS you can just forget about it. We're toast. It's my hope someone pulls Obama aside finally and says "you don't have to be so nice to these people it's okay to win".

"Mrs. Clinton's and her closest advisers' turning a suggestion by the President-elect that she might, among other things, head the State Department into an "offer"

This headline makes it sound like she made it up. The degree between sugestion and offer seem minimal.
Why try and fan the flames of Dem infighting. We've got crucial work to do

Now this sounds more like the truth. I figured that she or her staff had put the word out prematurely. Somehow I doubt that trying to corner Obama into choosing her will work out well for Hill and co.
