The Bush Administration is engaged in a last-minute flurry of efforts to open up environmentally sensitive and protected wilderness in Utah to drilling for oil and gas. Renowned actor, director and environmental activist Robert Redford appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show to denounce these final attempts to relax environmental regulations, an issue about which he recently blogged for the Huffington Post.

One crisis at a time, please. The environment affects ALL of us. Bush and Cheney need to be impeached ASAP. If not, at least pursue criminal charges against them and the rest of their administration.
They intentionally put these plans into motion early enough so that Obama would have his hands tied and be powerless to stop them.
The American people should have the right to demand and pursue justice since we are the ones whose lives have been put in danger. Bush is a traitor to his country, a murderer and a thief and now he's attempting to "silence" all of the witnesses...us.
There simply are no words that adequately describe how despicable Bush, Cheney and their toadies are.

No wonder they hated each other, they were so much alike...!

What is with these far left environwackos, they won't be happy until we are living in friggin huts and we have taxed business until they cannot survive.

Economic success and environmentalism cannot succeed together, one has to fail.

I guess that is why some of the largest corporations, like GE, are implementing environmentally friendly programs after finding it is actually more profitable to go green. Eh???

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:32 PM on 11/25/2008

So is GE being so profitable why we are now on the hook for $140 billion with a B from them?

Cutting energy costs and going "green" are two very different things.

If your closing statement is true, then the choice becomes clear, doesn't it?
If the economy fails (turn on your tv), new policies are implemented. The brunt of the pain is carried by those on the lower rungs of the economic ladder.
If the environment fails past a certain degree, we're all dead. That degree is rapidly approaching.

Go ahead and wake up whenever you're ready.

Exactly. That is why we still run raw sewage down the street, burn coal for heat and cooking, and dump toxic chemicals into rivers and lakes. You see, if we installed sanitary sewer, converted to natural gas for heating and cooking, and started treating and reducing the use of toxic chemicals, we'd all be living in friggin huts and there would be no business. Yes, there can not be any progress made on environmental issues, we have proven this over thousands of years.

I wish I got to talk to Mr Redford. I bumped into him once (literally) when I worked in NYC. I looked up at his face (I'm not very tall), saw who it is, got wide-eyed and smiled and just said "Iiii'mmm sssorrry." I didn't know what else to say.

I imagine that an injunction sought from a good federal judge will stop this long enough to get Obama and company in place. We shall see.

Rachel,

You scored big time! Love Redford! A lovely, thoughtful, whole person. Love that he's called out Bush on his last attempt to rape our environment.

Thanks, great interview.

The various environmental websites have been sending out petitions to sign for months. Redford sends a letter around too, asking for support financially on these atrocities. How to stop bush in his latest hobby of ruination is beyond me. You know he doesn't listen to anybody, cares less about what the citizens want and has no respect or love for our natural precious lands. He is a sociopath and he is proud of that he reaps. I admire Redford for his dedication and Bobby Kennedy Jr too. And WAY TO GO RACHEL.

I diddo most of the comments made here today! I too saw Mr Redford last night and he is almost right on! Dig just a little deeper and you should find that this is mostly about "Uranium" mining!! Google "Yellowcake" and follow the stories and links, your eye's may open to a much bigger picture as to the frauds that have been perpitrated(sp) on the American people over the last 8 years!! And we who are old enough would think Mr Nixon was a crook! He was just a puppy sitting on the porch , not running with the "BIG Dogs" like Cheney and Bush! The American people should call for an early withdrawl of their administration and let Mr. Obama hopefully get this country back on track! I pray that he stays the course that he preached in his campaign!! Get Bush and Cheney out of the "House" Now!!!

Robert Redford has been enviromentally conscious for a large number of years and has done much good work. He is also a driving contradiction as we all are who are living out of cities. For those without horses it is a long way to walk.

Well, are we surprised? I think not. Robert is so kind in his selection of words to describe George's cheating ways. All I can do is shake my head and THINK GEORGE W. BUSH IS A LOW LIFE. I MEAN REALLY DO THEY COME ANY LOWER?

The Bush Administration has imposed its greedy, power mongering, war mongering will into changing nearly every value that the majority of Americans hold dear. Most of the time that WILL has soiled the name of the United States all over the world, and made Americans fear being patriotic. Our flag is a symbol of America. The right-wing has taken the flag and used it as a weapon against us. We cannot lead the free world or even be a part of the free world until the original meaning of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights are reinstated. The future of our country and the world is predicated upon saving the planet from destruction. Robert Redford is a hero. We need more leaders like him in the environmental field. Without the planet, man will meet his demise and if we continue to support leaders like Bush/Cheney and the other world leaders who rule as they do, the demise will serve us right.

Ditto Marg.
However, none of this would have been possible without the abject submission and dereliction of duty of Congress, a.k.a. the Broken Branch.

They richly deserve their abysmally low approval rate.

I have been over from Germany to visit these parks like Zion, Arches, Canyonlands etc. IMO they should be protected like world heritage sites for their sheer beauty. People living in the area can make money from tourism for ages. Destroying this land is like pulling the rug under your feet while standing on it.
