Sen. Menendez Named Head Of DSCC
Sen. Bob Menendez was named the next chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Tuesday morning, taking the reigns from his wildly successful tri-state colleague Chuck Schumer.
Menendez's appointment was anticipated. He had served as vice chairman of the DSCC for the past two years, and he brings with him obvious assets to the post: one of the highest-ranking Hispanics in Congress, he is no stranger to the challenges of a tough race. Menendez was appointed to the Senate in January 2006 to complete Gov. Jon Corzine's term and clawed his way to a full term ten months later.
The key for the New Jersey Democrat will be to build upon the successful blueprint Schumer put in place four years ago. Democrats gained six senate seats in 2006 and another seven in 2008 (with the potential for two more). They did this largely by fielding candidates that could compete in traditionally conservative environments; raising large amounts of money; and adopting a political ethos that called for an assertive response to each and every attack.
In a statement released by the DSCC, Menendez hinted that his tenure would be modeled on that of his predecessor.
I am humbled by this opportunity, and I fully recognize the responsibility that comes with it. In 2006 and again this year, under the masterful stewardship of Senator Schumer, we have made major gains toward bringing change to our country. We face historic challenges and must continue to move in that new direction. I intend to make sure that we build upon the majority in Senate that allows us to affect the change we need. I want to thank Majority Leader Reid for his terrific leadership and for entrusting me with this position.
