SUSSEX, Va. — Former NFL quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty Tuesday to a state dogfighting charge, a move that could make him eligible to leave prison early and potentially speed up a return to pro football.

Vick, 28, arrived wearing wrist and ankle shackles with his gray suit, but the restraints were removed by the time he entered his plea. The one-time Atlanta Falcons star also pleaded not guilty to a count of cruelty to animals, but that charge was dropped under his plea deal.

He received a three-year suspended sentence _ far less than the maximum of 10 years he could have faced.

"I want to apologize to the court, my family, and to all the kids who looked up to me as a role model," Vick told the judge.

Vick's mother Brenda Boddie, brother Marcus Vick and fiancee Kijafa Frink walked in together and sat together in the front row of the gallery with other family and friends. Vick's mother declined to comment to reporters but Marcus Vick acknowledged the family was glad the ordeal was nearly over.

Vick was stoic throughout the approximately 20-minute hearing. Afterward, he turned to his young daughter and winked.

After the hearing, Surry County Commonwealth Attorney Gerald Poindexter approached Vick's mother and hugged her, saying, "At least some of this is over."

Vick already is serving a 23-month sentence in Leavenworth, Kan. on federal charges of bankrolling a dogfighting operation at a home he owned in eastern Virginia's rural Surry County, southeast of Richmond. He also admitted to participating in the killing of several underperforming dogs.

Poindexter defended allowing Vick to avoid additional prison time.

"I feel that what I did today is approved by more than a majority of Surry County, and that's the constituency that I'm concerned about," he said.

Vick is scheduled for release on July 20, 2009, and will serve three years of probation. His latest plea is important because it resolves the remaining charges against him, which is required under federal law if he is to move into a halfway house.

Vick's agent Joel Segal attended the hearing and afterwards wouldn't talk specifically about a possible return to the NFL, saying only, "Mike takes full responsibility for his actions and is ready to more forward and will let his actions speak for him."

Once the highest paid player in the NFL, Vick appeared about as trim Tuesday as when he entered prison a year ago. His lawyer, Billy Martin, said Vick's legal team hasn't been involved in any preliminary steps to revive the suspended player's career, focusing instead on reuniting him with his family.

"Michael as a human being is clearly somebody that we want to salvage," Martin said. "Michael as a football player is somebody that down the road may get a chance to look again."

The trick may be finding a team ready to take a risk on the former quarterback.

Atlanta still has Vick under contract. But Falcons owner Arthur Blank made clear late last month the three-time Pro Bowl selection won't wear that team's uniform again.

"I hope they're prepared to face the dog lovers of America," Kansas City Chiefs president and general manager Carl Peterson said earlier of a team that acquires Vick. "There are going to be a lot of problems. People love their pets, and particularly dogs. There will be protests, people expressing their thoughts _ even though he's served his time."

Vick's problems have compounded since his federal conviction in 2007. He's landed in bankruptcy court after losing nearly all of his record-breaking $130 million from a 10-year deal he signed with Atlanta in December 2004.

Nine protesters from the animal rights group PETA stood quietly outside the courthouse before the hearing, holding signs with photographs of bloodied fighting dogs and others that read "Dogfighters repent."

Asked how activists would respond if the NFL takes Vick back, Dan Shannon, assistant director of PETA, said Vick must speak out against dogfighting as someone who "participated in dogfighting and saw it ruin everything he built for himself and take away all his fame, all his fortune, all of his respect."

"If he chooses to do that, that's the only way I think he could ever be seen as any kind of a positive public figure," Shannon said.

You have to make that point in short sentences. HuffPost won't allow a full explanation of people foaming at the mouth and calling for Vick's, Bonds', Tyson's and a lot of other black athletes' heads.

Some people jump on ideological bandwagons so they can heap verbal abuse on others while pretending they're enlightened. That certainly seems to be what's going on in some of the posts written here.

I live in San Francisco where people work harder to save dogs than the homeless that they step over while walking those dogs. There's this mythical thinking that if you love love love animals, then you are still a good person, even if you don't give a $hit about your neighbor (literally, the infamous Dog Biting Case was here, where people protested putting down the dogs that killed their female neighbor).

These are the same people who clutch their purses tighter when they see teenagers from public schools, without thinking that they could volunteer to read with those same children so they don't seem so "scary."

These are the people who shove their fathers and mothers into a lonely rest home without thinking that a pet and a bustling household can actually provide a benefit senior citizens and terminally ill.

I think these people have never experienced any real oppression, persecutuion or loss. Animals become their way to enter into conversation about suffering. But because they've never suffered, they don't keep it in perspective. They think theirs is the one and only cause.

Vick was wrong. No doubt. I love animals and donate to shelters. I smile at dogs when I see them on the street. I don't even eat meat. He deserves to be punished, but I can't call for bloody vengence against this man. It seems completely counter intuitive for someone who loves animals because they are peaceful creatures.

i believe that people that rally to protect animals do so because that is an area where they can exercise total control---controlled protection, environment, sheltered love....the animal won't leave you and risk exposure to dangerous outside elements. you don't necessarily get the same outcome with people---they can abandon you, return to their lives whether it be dru gs, gan gs, etc. we tend to blame/pass judgment against people because we feel that they should take personal responsibility.....you don't have the same expectations of a dog.

as a volunteer/contributor to many young "at-risk" women, my mom, my friends and i have tried to educate and provide tools for success.....unfortunately, we can't always be with them and despite our efforts, many of them succumb to their surroundings and fall into the trap of teen pregnancy, dropping out, etc.

i will never give up in my quest to help people and animals (i'm a vegetarian and animal rights supporter) but i must confess that i am often frustrated. even oprah who donates money to american children for education was criticized her school in Africa. she said that education was more highly valued there. and what was her solution? to keep the girls sheltered away from outside factors that could deter their progress.

my point is, an animal won't disappoint you the way people can, unless you're rich enough to control all outside environmental factors.

Hunters (including some judges and prosecutors) vacate on expensive hunting trips basically to shoot animals for their enjoyment and for the prized racks.

No one seems to be so concerned about the pain and suffering of these animals. And don't give me this talk about humane kills. Most of these so-called hunters are novices at best with limited experience. They often miss their mark thereby tearing up, crippling and severely maiming their target. These animals often escape far enough to where the hunters are unable, unwilling or just too lazy to pursue and end up dying an awful death in the brush.

Don't get me wrong, what Vick did was reprehensible but we as a society should be able to find a solution which punishes him without the possibility of destroying his livelihood and career.
There are child molesters and killers that's received less time and punishment.

Excellent point! That is the point many of us were trying to make, but in the process have been labeled among other things "animal haters, killers, etc."

I am against hunting unless you have to eat or starve. To me it is legalized murder and to call it a sport where the hunter has all the advantages and the animal none is a very sick joke. However what bothers me about the people supporting Vick is that they seem to impy that it is not so bad what he did. or to assume that I would walk over the bodies of the homeless. or that I am a rascist. Why can't you care about all injustice, Many of the vick supporteres claim they care about people first. Care about anything that suffers -is that not what religion teaches. To condone what he is done is to destroy apart of the human spirit.

Murder - The unlawful killing of one human by another, especially with premeditated malice. Its for humans people. What he did is called cruelty to animals. Let him do his time and move on.

You are a morally and spiritually bankrupt person. Just like Vick. You have so much in common with Palin et al that it's (almost) comical.

Fortunately, though unfortunate for you, the glamorised era of thuggery and violence is coming to an end.

What will you use as an excuse for sadistic depravity?

You are far from a highly evolved human being. The activities you condone and defend are barbaric, primative and uncivilised.

Perhaps you should move to Alaska to be with people such as yourself. They're not real big on intellect up there -- you'll fit in beautifully.

Will Bush give a pardon to his friend Libby?

"I feel that what I did today is approved by more than a majority of Surry County, and that's the constituency that I'm concerned about," he said.

What Vick did was stunningly cruel and reprehensible. Comparing it, or contrasting it, or even seeking in some way to excuse it does nothing to change that simple fact.

He murdered vulnerable living things for profit. He hanged or drowned them. Maybe you don't object to that, but most sane people do.

America is full of people who want former inmates to be punished forever. I've never understood that mentality because the inability to earn a living is one of the main reasons for recidivism.
