ALBANY - Eight months after a federal investigation into a prostitution ring brought about the downfall of Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the question still persists in some circles: Was the federal government out to get Mr. Spitzer?

No evidence has surfaced to support such an assertion, and investigators have said that politics played no role in their pursuit of Mr. Spitzer. But that has not put to rest suspicions, expressed on left wing blogs, that Mr. Spitzer, a zealous pursuer of Wall Street wrongdoing who some thought could one day be president, had been singled out.

Hell yeah. No matter that Spitzer was/is, he is a major crime fighter. He put away many, many powerful cime figures. In those circles, everyone knows everyone's secrets. Somebody knew what Elliott was up too, they were probably us to the same thing. Spitzer, spoke of his abilities to hold everyone accountable for their crimes. It's just that now that his own words have come back to haunt him things will need to be investigated. Better watch out Elliott, don't want to open that can of worms called

Au contraire -- that's exactly what they had in mind! But it's interesting, no? In the 19th century, when that apothegm was coined, when men and women stayed in hotels or, at the time, mostly "inns", if the place was crowded they not untypically had a to share a bed with a stranger of the same sex. Those were more innocent times, true, but still, the practice (which gave rise to the term "bedfellow") does not make me want to be living then....
