New York Times:

ALBANY - Eight months after a federal investigation into a prostitution ring brought about the downfall of Gov. Eliot Spitzer, the question still persists in some circles: Was the federal government out to get Mr. Spitzer?

No evidence has surfaced to support such an assertion, and investigators have said that politics played no role in their pursuit of Mr. Spitzer. But that has not put to rest suspicions, expressed on left wing blogs, that Mr. Spitzer, a zealous pursuer of Wall Street wrongdoing who some thought could one day be president, had been singled out.

You can thank the FISA bill with RETROACTIVE IMMUNITY. It's all a lie, folks. They took J. Edgar Hoover's playbook and ran with it. Why do you think Nancy won't put impeachment back on the table? Why do you think the Democrats are so spineless? You have your answer. And as kellygrrrl has done said, he was getting too close to the truth on the finance system. And AT&T is laughing about it all. Why not? They have retroactive immunity! You know, the thing most people didn't think was all that important.

I welcome this probe. Spitzer was singled out by the Bush justice department, probably on orders from Rove. They got him just like they got Bill Clinton. This man had a weakness and the bushies made hime pay for it.

I would LOVE to see them unleash Spitzer as a special prosecutor to build the impeachment case against bush/cheney. He might be a little too horny, but he's a helluva prosecutor and smart as hell relative to prosecution. If that happened, I'll bet Paulson would leave the country.

Spitzer was doing what he had prosecuted others for, so I have little sympathy. I must ask, however, why would George Bush want unfettered access to tap phone conversations if he wasn't listening to Democrats? I'll bet he was and this could have played a role in Spitzer's demise.

Amazing: Bush/Cheney destroy the Constitution, the economy, torture, and wiretap citizens and get off without a bruise, and Spitzer is eviscerated for a simple indiscretion as old as time, and one accepted world wide except here in MORAL America, the country that hung Blacks, and allows its bankers to loot the treasury with impunity.

What an insane country America is.

We need Spitzer as AG, but of course it will never happen. We are so moral and ethical.

Screw Spitzer. He prosecuted hookers yet he hired them? The ultimate hypocrite. Hope he is ruined for life.

With all the nation and the world are facing, Congressmen want to spend time on the slacious details of Sptizer's downfall. Forget it. Focus on something important. Why among on the crimes the Bush administration has committed, would Congress speculate on this one?

If you recall, Spitzer's probe is what started all of this...

Of course it was a political witch hunt. No doubt in my mind. Still, he would have never had a problem if he wasn't such an almighty narcissist. Unfortunately, our loss as New Yorkers. He would have been a great leader, no doubt.

Ya think? Why do you thing the Bushies wanted to do all the domestic wiretapping?

To keep track of the Democrats, the Netroots, and particularly Democratic governors, as they took two out.

I am amazed that many in this thread do not see the link between The Bush administration's wiretapping of the private conversations of American soldiers serving in Iraq and the their use of the same technique against Eliot Spitzer. Now that a real leader has been silenced, America is moving into an unknown future without solid leadership. Obama has shown his lack of confidence to venture and make bold appointments. He seem to depend the advice of primarily old hacks. Alas.

If the government was out to get Mr.Spitzer, he sure was more than happy to cooperate with the plan, no?

Perhaps our Congress should spend its time investigating issues more current and directly related to the subprime blowup, i.e., have they thought of taking a look at the apparently disgraceful failure of the bond ratings agencies such as S & Ps and Moody's?

You know there are 425 members of the House of Representatives and 100 senators.

There is plenty of work for everyone.

Spitzers' hoohaa is what got him into trouble. If the left-wing bloggers want to forgive, that's fine. But he is still unfit for office. If he can break one promise-his wedding vows-then he can break all the others. Including his oath of office.

Unlike Bush/Cheney Spitzer did NOT break his Oath of Office.

To protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States.
Just so many meaningless words to Bush/Cheney.

And the rest of the Right Wing.

OK, do a complete rehab of Eliot Spitzer. Turn him loose on the Wall St thieves again. BTW-how about finding a way to use the talents of John Edwards & Gary Hart too?
I guess BHO can't pardon the former Gov of Alabama who got framed with the help of Rove since it wasn't a federal case. If I'm wrong & the former Gov got framed on a fed charge-pardon him. The man would be motivated, as the human resource people say, to gather damning evidence on Wall St's thieves.

After reading up on this guy, why wasn't he smart enough to pay cash and arrange his liaisons out of town? For crying out loud, he had to know that making powerful enemies means you have to watch your @ss all of the time.
