MUMBAI, India — Masked Indian commandos dropped from helicopters Friday onto the roof of a Jewish center in Mumbai where Muslim militants were holed up, possibly with hostages, as sharpshooters kept up a steady stream of fire at the five-story building.

The assault was punctuated by gunshots and explosions from within the building as the forces cleared the building floor-by floor. Elsewhere in the city, commandos scoured two luxury hotels for suspected Muslim attackers still holed up more than a day after a chain of attacks across India's financial center by the militants left at least 119 people dead.

Hundreds of people had been captive in the two hotels, many locking themselves in their rooms or trying to hide as the gunmen roamed the buildings.

One victim was British-Cypriot Andreas Dionysiou Liveras, 73, the owner of a luxury yacht business,

said the Cypriot foreign ministry and his brother, Theophanis Liveras.

Andreas Dionysiou Liveras, who was attending a conference, had spoken to the British Broadcasting Corp. from a locked room inside the Taj Hotel before he was killed.

"As we sat at the table we heard the machine gun fire outside in the corridor. We hid under the table and then they switched all the lights off. ... All we know is the bombs are next door and the hotel is shaking every time a bomb goes off," he said.

At the headquarters of the ultra-orthodox Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch, a commando assault began shortly after dawn following a tense night in which six trucks of soldiers had been brought in to surround the building.

Story continues below

Snipers stationed in buildings opposite the center began the attack, with sustained fire on the building as at least nine commandos lowered themselves by rope onto the roof from a circling Indian air force helicopter.

Hundreds of onlookers, many with binoculars, crowded onto the roofs and in narrow alleys of southern Mumbai, trying to catch a glimpse of the dramatic commando assault.

It was not immediately clear if there were hostages in the building or their fate.

On Thursday morning, two workers and a child escaped from the building, the only people to emerge so far. The child was identified as Moshe Holtzberg, 2, the son of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, the main representative at Chabad house. The child was unharmed, but his clothes were soaked in blood.

The well-coordinated strikes by small bands of gunmen starting Wednesday night left the city shell-shocked, but the sporadic gunfire and explosions at the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels dwindled overnight, indicating the sieges there might be winding down.

Security forces searched room by room at the hotels _ two of the top gathering spots for the Mumbai elite _ but there were no gunbattles or blasts. Commandos had spent much of Thursday bringing out hostages, trapped guests and corpses from the hotels in small groups while firefighters battled flames that erupted. The fires were out by Friday.

The Maharashtra state home ministry said dozens of hostages had been freed from the Oberoi and dozens more were still trapped inside. More than 400 people were brought out of the Taj Mahal on Thursday.

Authorities said they had killed three gunmen at the Taj. However, army commanders said they believed there were still two or three more militants in the Taj and about 15 civilians. "We need to get them out of the rooms they have locked themselves into," said Brig. Bobby Mathews.

State officials said 119 people had died and 288 were injured in the attacks.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blamed "external forces" for the violence _ a phrase sometimes used to refer to Pakistani militants, whom Indian authorities often blame attacks on.

The gunmen were well-prepared, even carrying large bags of almonds to keep up their energy during the fight. Their main targets appeared to be Americans, Britons and Jews, though most of the dead seemed to be Indians and foreign tourists caught in the random gunfire.

The gunmen _ some of whom strode casually through their targets in khakis and T-shirts _ clearly came ready for a siege.

"They have AK-47s and grenades. They have bags full of grenades and have come fully prepared," said Maj. Gen. R.K. Hooda.

Ratan Tata, who runs the company that owns the elegant Taj Mahal, said they had detailed knowledge of the layout of the hotels.

A U.S. investigative team was heading to Mumbai, a State Department official said Thursday evening, speaking on condition of anonymity because the U.S. and Indian governments were still working out final details. The official declined to identify which agency or agencies the team members came from.

India has been shaken repeatedly by terror attacks blamed on Muslim militants in recent years, but most of them were coordinated bombings striking random crowded places: markets, street corners, parks.

These attacks were more sophisticated _ and more brazen.

They began at about 9:20 p.m. with the shooters spraying gunfire across the Chhatrapati Shivaji railroad station, one of the world's busiest terminals. For the next two hours, there was an attack roughly every 15 minutes _ the Jewish center, a tourist restaurant, one hotel, then another, and two attacks on hospitals. There were 10 targets in all.

Indian media showed pictures of rubber dinghies found by the city's shoreline, apparently used by the gunmen to reach the area. Both of the luxury hotels targeted overlook the Arabian Sea, which surrounds the peninsula of Mumbai.

Analysts around the world were debating whether the gunmen could have been tied to _ or inspired by _ al-Qaida.

"It's clear that it is al-Qaida style," but probably not carried out by the group's militants, said Rohan Gunaratna, of the International Center for Political Violence and Terrorism Research in Singapore and author of "Inside Al-Qaida."

Indian media reports said a previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility in e-mails to several media outlets. The Deccan is a region in southern India that was traditionally ruled by Muslim kings.

Survivors of the hotel attacks said the gunmen had specifically targeted Britons and Americans.

One of the gunmen "stopped once and asked, 'Where are you from? Any British or American? Show your ID," Alex Chamberlain, a British citizen dining at the Oberoi, told reporters.

Among the dead were Australians and a Japanese, said the state home ministry. An Italian, a Briton and a German were also killed, according to their foreign ministries.

At least three top Indian police officers _ including the chief of the anti-terror squad _ were among those killed.

The United States, Pakistan and other countries condemned the attacks.

The motive for the onslaught was not immediately clear, but Mumbai has frequently been targeted in terrorist attacks blamed on Islamic extremists, including a series of bombings in July 2006 that killed 187 people.

Mumbai is one of the most populated cities in the world with some 18 million crammed into shantytowns, high rises and crumbling mansions.

Relations between Hindus, who make up more than 80 percent of India's 1 billion population, and Muslims, who make up about 14 percent, have sporadically erupted into bouts of sectarian violence since British-ruled India was split into independent India and Pakistan in 1947.

Yes, and check the articles about Israeli Mossad involvement again. Clearly there were several hotels attacked and now the U.S. Media is only focusing on the Nariman House.

They Cheney/Bush administration is going out with another huge failure in the GWOT. A large coordinatated a t t a c k of this kind requires lots of preparation and logistics. The White House apparently didn't pick up on it. The last refuge of the 29 percenters is to say that Bush has been a great president because there have been no t3rr0r!st a t t a c k s in the U.S. since 911. Well, here' s your a t t a c k on Americans.

When did Gates become president?

After Obama is inaugurated, Gates will work for him, and will do as Obama instructs or he will be unemployed.

Why do you continue to believe that Obama won't be in charge?

Did the campaign teach you nothing?

The buck stops .. where?

The Cheney/Bush administration has been full of big talk about protecting freedom and fighting terrsts and how they're so big on defense and how they have to s p y on everybody. Lotsa big talk but no effective action except buying off our enemies in Iraq.

That little man with the red nose used to strut around (I haven't seen him strut much lately because he's been out of sight during the financial crisis) but he hasn't delivered.

how is this an American failure, if it happened in India and involved Pakistani (and other) nationals?

Wouldn't it be a failure of the Indian and Pakistani intelligence agencies?

I think blaming Pakistan is a mistake again these are the actions of a few. You dont blame an entire country. I highly doubt that the leaders of Pakistan tell these people to go and attack India. I hope they let calm prevail and think things through and work WITH Pakistan to bring this group to justice if they are others still in Pakistan rather than blaming the entire country. Terrorism doesnt need government sanction to proceed.

I agree, when Indian tv is stating that this is a group from within the country, that may have involvment from Israeli Mossad. Why are they just talking about the Nariman House when clearly there were several other hotels that were attacked. Here we go again with Israelis sticking their noses in another conflict.

"Days?" You mean the 36-48 hours since the siege began?

Millions of us are angry about what has happened to the Iraqi people under President Cheney and The Oval Office Floor Vase. Fifty-three percent of the American electorate has just kicked their party out of the White House.

When our friends and family are in harm's way in a war that never should have happened, believe me, nobody has stopped thinking about Iraq.

An Indian doctor who was inside one of Mumbai hotels attacked by Islamist militants described today how a member of staff shielded his family and other guests from gunfire in an attempt to protect them.

Prashant Mangeshikar's account of the siege at the Taj Mahal follows repeated praise for the way workers at the hotel and at the Oberoi hotel stayed calm and tried to hide or evacuate guests when gunmen stormed in on Wednesday night.

Mangeshikar, 52, told Reuters that he had been in the foyer with his wife and daughter when the attackers arrived and started firing. Hotel workers ushered guests into an upstairs service area to escape, but they then came across another gunman.

"He looked young and did not speak to us. He just fired. We were in sort of a single file," said the Mumbai gynaecologist. "The man in front of my wife shielded us. He was a maintenance staff. He took the bullets."

Mangeshikar added that the guests managed to take shelter inside a room, dragging the injured staff member, identified only as Mr Rajan, in with them. For the next 12 hours they attempted to stop the bleeding from his stomach wound. Rajan was eventually evacuated, but it is not known whether he survived.

"I'm going out today to the hospital to find out what happened to him," Mangeshikar said. "I owe it to that brave man."

Its in their nature.

Taj particularly has long history of courtesy and hospitality.

The hotel was built by Jamshed Tata after Brits (who ruled India) turned him away from entering a club (that exists a street behind what is now Taj). because he was non-white.

He went around building the best possible hotel with highest possible standards with courtesy to one and all.

Taj hotel head (vice chair of Taj Group) - refused to leave even given an opportunity to do so. He along with wife and young kids were all killed. Just confirmed.

Well I'm afraid you will be in for a disapointment as Obama has said numerous times he is NOT going to negotiate with terrorist and you dont. The way to fight them is to engage other countries as ally to Fight them not isolate yourself like Bush did thats how he intends to break from Bush's policies. You also try to root out things like poverty and discrimination against Islam and the Islamic people and you dont blame the entire group for the actions of a few thats how you fight them.

The basic thrust fo the Islam doctrine is undeniable: convert, subjugate, or kill unbelievers; kill apostates (muslims who converted to other faiths) and conquer the world. Imperialism is one of the chief sins that the Muslims attribute to the West and more especially, the Islamic case against the West.

It makes the terrorist feel like they did something big. They are NOT helping CNN is joke. I can't believe they are the most watched. You dont give these kinds of people that kind of attention. But its so true as you said the genocide in darfur they dont give this kind of attention.

They should have gone back to regular news and when anything break they cut rather than playing this thing over and over.

Maybe the difference is that 150+ died at the same time in India compared to it being more prolonged over time in Darfur, Iraqnam, and other places? Remember the famous line from "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley that went "The bubble-headed bleach blonde comes on at five. She tells ya about the plane crash with a gleam in her eyes. Its interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry."

Beg to differ; it's already being spoken of in such terms as "India's 9 1 1".

there are more people than you might think who not only care but keep up with developments in that area of the world.

the tragedy of darfur is one that makes my blood boil, because it is one that could have been ameliorated except for the fact that it was deemed politically expedient by the neo-cons of this country to let it happen. and it all had to do with oil and money, just like iraq.

the entire continent of africa can trace a significant part of its grinding poverty directly to the unholy marriage of its opportunistic corrupt leaders and the acolytes of m i l t o n f r i e d m a n. those countries are some of the richest on earth in terms of natural resources, and they shook off the empires that conquered them only to be hamstrung by the machinations of world financial institutions from way back.

now, we simply don't have the cavalry available to send in anymore to help anybody.

But the point, and it's a justified one, is that MSM doesn't cover those other areas...we have documentaries, Democracy Now and the alternate media on those stories.

I guess I'll be a cynic and point out that the tabloid media loves pictures of dramatic stuff happening...This story - as newsworthy as it is and useful as some background might be if they care to give us some - has ex.plosions, gun.fire, etc as well as a local angle - the Australian media is full of stories of Australians caught up in it. This is in contrast to Zimbabwe or Darfur, which while undeniably tragic and horrific and I agree that it deserves greater attention. Mugabe has banned major media outlets like the BBC from even reporting from Zimbabwe and it doesn't have the immediacy of this story - Zimbabwe was falling apart at least as far back as 2001. You could compare it with the coverage of the 2004 Asian tsunami which again had dramatic pictures and rich white people caught up in it and the Pakistani earthquake a year or two later which got almost no coverage in comparison despite being just as devastating.

"It's clear that it is al-Qaida style," but probably not carried out by the group's militants." Look folks, are we going to buy into this Al-Qaida propaganda this time too? This is not the first time an attack like this took place in India and what did they do? Point the finger at Pakistan. What they should do is check their own backyard.

More updates :-

Looks like this mess is more to do with power struggle in Pakistan than terror in India.

1. Power struggle in Pakistan between ISI and civilian President.

2. Pakistan president makes credible overtunes to India.

3. Pakistan foreign affairs minister happens to be present in India.

4. Now Pakistan has agreed to send ISI chief to India. Unheard of event.

Starting to sound like "rogue" elements of ISI (only reason ISI chief will head to India).

Hopefully both countries will come out this mess with more sanity than ever.

New news reports came out (though not widely televised) that the Clinton camp started the rumor of Hillary as SOS. Not once (as of yesterday) has Obama's group said they were considering Hillary for SOS. So, we're left with misleading information that makes most of us think that Hillary's getting the job.

Pray and hope Hillary does not get to SoS.

Between her and Bill \Madeline arrogance and eagerness in regard to Sub continent - they will create a mess.

Its one (of the few) good thing with Bush second term. They got the policy in subcontitent right.

God help us all.

Bush and team got foreign policy right!?! Preemptive war in Iraq part of that????

Their foreign policy for the Sub continent of aiding Pakistan's ISI with many billions of dollars over the last 10 years was a good thing?? I think India would beg to differ right now!!!

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. Ambassador on Thursday to protest Wednesday’s missile strike, which also came in for strong condemnation by the National Assembly.

The missiles fired by a suspected U.S. drone hit a house in Bannu, a district in the North-West Frontier Province, killing six people.

Though the U.S. missile strikes in the border regions have become almost routine, this one has sent fresh shockwaves as this was the first in “settled” area of Pakistan (as opposed to the tribal belt) with a proper administrative machinery.

It has raised fears that the U.S. military is getting bolder and advancing deeper into Pakistani territory, and that at this rate may start raining missiles even on cities, on grounds of “actionable” intelligence about suspected targets.

Pakistanis have seriously begun to wonder how far the U.S. will go, and the National Assembly saw a chorus of protests by the opposition and a walkout by a parliamentarian representing the tribal areas.

Chaudhary Nisar Ahmed of the Pakistan Muslim League (N), demanded the government seek help from the U.N. to end the missile strikes. Prime Minister Gilani denied a recent report that his government and the U.S. had reached an understanding to enable the missile strikes. “Being chief executive of this country, I want to assure you that there is no understanding [with the U.S.],” he said speaking in the National Assembly.

The spin on this incident troubles me. An Al-Queda like attack = An Al-Queda attack. Are you afraid yet? No, let's add more. It's Thanksgiving and empathy is high. Though reports say Indians and random tourists have been the ones killed, Brits/Americans were asked for passports (one source says). This appears in every report. Are they after us specifically? Are you scared yet? Not yet, ...

Reports say this could be about Kashmir and that attacks like this (100's killed) happen often in India . Yet, the emphasis is on how these are different than normal and how tourist and a Jewish facility were attacked. Are you convinced yet it's the Al-Queda sleeper cells specifically targeting us and our allies? How can we convince you?

I know, we'll mention Pakistan repeatedely and emphasize our important talking points so you link it together to mean, "Al-Queda targeted us in these attacks. Pakistan supports this." If any Americans die in this incident, we'll tie these and other stories together for you so you support a Pakistan war. If you find out that it was all about Kashmir, then we'll tie India/Kashmir into the den of antiAmerican countries. Wait, we haven't mentioned Iran in this story. Let's find a way.

P.S. If you're thinking, what's the motive for war if there's no real threat, watch the BBC's 2004 documentary, "The Power of Nightmares" on youtube or google. It will free you from the shackles of unfounded fear.
