Page Six reports:

SOME roles just don't suit Natalie Portman. At the junket for the film version of his "Doubt," playwright John Patrick Shanley was asked how Amy Adams won the role of an emotionally conflicted nun. "I'm trying to think of what the etiquette is on this," Shanley chuckled, blushing a bit. Urged on by a blogger for gossipsauce.com, he continued, "Well, we asked Natalie Portman, and Natalie was very interested but kept saying she had a problem. And we finally nailed down as to what the problem was. She basically said she didn't understand celibacy."

Here's a trailer for the film, featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and, ahem, not Natalie Portman.

I don't understand kids like her who don't understand celibacy. And in this sexually perverse world we're living in where the pressure put on women through ads, music lyrics, television, film and new media to be sexually attractive and sexually active is overwhelming, how could she?

I believe Sarah Palin's daughter proved that celibacy produces children.

Oh please, 'Ozzie & Harriett' world was a fantasy imposed by corporate censors. I have yet to find a previous time that was any less sexual than the present day. Restraint of human nature is like squeezing a tube of toothpaste, if one area of behavior gets pressed down another behavior bulges up somewhere else as compensation. What did De Sade say? That despite all their public decorum and manners the secret wish of the French ruling class was to be buggered by their servants.

It seems many were. Another thing that's always been true.

There's some serious stuff here. To begin with, where did the tradition of celibacy of priesthood/nunnery come from? I'm a non-Catholic, so I can only speculate that it is linked with some image of the (possible) celibacy of Jesus, or some more primitive institutionalization of channeling the sexual energies for devotion.....Since most older middle-eastern religions celebrated fecundity with ceremonial prostitute/priestesses and much phallic representation, perhaps it is merely a matter of tribal differentiation and protection of fertility, as in an impulse to sequester corralled DNA. In modern Mormon fundamentalist culture, celibacy is enforced on young competing males by expulsion. In wolf packs, hormonal imperatives apparently limit reproduction to an alpha female and male, conserving pack energy to nurture the anointed pups. Generally, celibacy is valued for females, the opposite for males.
Truth is, nobody gets it, lust and chaos are transcendant as the selfish gene demands variegation, and Natalie is probably a very bright woman.

1. I don't understand the connection between this film and celibacy, unless you infer that not being celibate means you have a 'thing' for animals.

2. I infer that you, InfinityMiami, may have a "thing" for animals and thus were attracted to this clip.

3. I would suggest if #2 is true that you may be best served by seeking psychiatric help.

If not psychiatric help, well, maybe a visit to your local zoo.

Amy Adams is a good fit for the role--I can't imagine Natalie Portman in it, and I like Natalie Portman.

Natalie rocks. screw all of you.

Nice attitude. Not "all of us" are speaking against Natalie Portman. She is a lovely young woman who has done well in some of the roles she has undertaken, most notably in my opinion in "Closer."

As of now, 353 comments on this?? Those who stand up for Portman ? Those who attack the gossip ? Have you nothing else to do ?

This section of HuffPo is like toilet paper. Use it, flush it. An opinion about it? Like examining crap.

Hey, look at the section title. It's called 'Entertainment'. Isn't that what entertainment 'News' is? This kind of junk IS entertainment news. If you want to read serious stuff...move the mouse cursor over to Business, Politics or "Home" and click....its not hard to do.

This kind of recycled gossip is beneath the purpose of this site. Portman's an artist who doubtlessly judges the resonance of a script based on a broader sense than this gossip slur implies. More on that here [http://dailyrevolution.net/?p=3168] .

What is wrong with not understanding celibacy??? About 99 9/10 % of men don't either. Is there something wrong with that???

The repressive Puritanical mentality of denying one's natural impulses and desires as if they were "bad", "evil", "ungodly" or something to be tamed is one of the greatest societal mental clusterf*cks of all time.

Humans have been reproducing and enjoying healthy, diverse sex for the last 150,000 years before religion came along in the last few thousand years and began deeming that our natural programming is somehow "wrong" and that which comes natural is a design flaw. Even though all of our drives and biological imperatives are essential for our survival and the continuation of our species.

Celibacy as a concept - abstaining from an enjoyable activity that releases stress, promotes health, offsets many kinds of cancer and is programmed into the core of your genetic makeup in order to satisfy some sense of guilt over some taboo artificially implanted in your mind - is irrational, illogical and personally destructive.

Chalk another one up to organized, doctrinal religion...

Puritanism may be an unhealthy mob mentality, but deciding to be celibate, or control one's sexual urges, is a personal and private matter no different from other forms of yoga.

But for public policy, I encourage healthy sexual expression and agree with you wholeheartedly.

Natalie Portman is a bright woman. Surely if she looks up the word, she can understand what it means.
