I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Celibacy

Page Six reports:

SOME roles just don't suit Natalie Portman. At the junket for the film version of his "Doubt," playwright John Patrick Shanley was asked how Amy Adams won the role of an emotionally conflicted nun. "I'm trying to think of what the etiquette is on this," Shanley chuckled, blushing a bit. Urged on by a blogger for gossipsauce.com, he continued, "Well, we asked Natalie Portman, and Natalie was very interested but kept saying she had a problem. And we finally nailed down as to what the problem was. She basically said she didn't understand celibacy."

Here's a trailer for the film, featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and, ahem, not Natalie Portman.

Celibacy is as stupid as never eating chocolate (obviously, people with allergies are excepted from this analogy). Sure, you can choose to go without chocolate, but why would you? To show the world how special you are? Sex is fun and a valuable way to share a connection with someone. It's good exercise, promotes a strong immune system and (if done right) reduces stress.

Plus, fornication pisses off religious dummies, which is always something that's good to do!

It promotes a strong immune system? If you get AIDS your immune system will be trashed, and if you get Herpes (1 in 5 adults has the Herpes virus) you will be on meds for the rest of your life trying to suppress the virus.

I hope you are being careful.

that doesn't devalue the argument that sex as well as kissing are good for your immune system. your argument is sorely lacking because by far not all of the 1 in 5 ( im just gonna believe you on that number but id like to see the studies) is contagious.

Celibacy is a challenge to understand, but it’s not insurmountable. I’ve been a Catholic nun for about 10 years now and it’s something to deal with, but it’s definitely possible! Do check out my response for Natalie on my blog ANunsLife.org!

Who ever claimed that nuns (or monks for that matter) were ever entirely celibate anyway? There's a location in Goodramgate, York, England, where (and I hope I've got this story right) a covered bridge over the roadway, which used to connect two monastic buildings, was eventually demolished in attempts to stop the two groups from visiting each other during the night.

Dear Ms Portman,

Thank you for your honesty, in admitting that you do not quite understand honesty. Chastity is a celestial virtue, and no one not committed to it should claim to understand it. I think you did well to say you do not understand something very difficult, mysterious, and alien to worldly values.

But, you might do well to replay your copy [i trust you have one] of V for Vendetta, your best work, and consider the noble chastity of the hero and heroine.

Chastity and Celibacy are two different things.
For one, Chastity implies that the sex that one is not having is "unlawful" (adultery) No Vows neded:
1: the quality or state of being chaste: as a: abstention from unlawful sexual intercourse b: abstention from all sexual intercourse c: purity in conduct and intention d: restraint and simplicity in design or expression

For one can be married and be chaste.

Celibacy, on the other hand (no pun intended) is the vow to refrain from sex AND marriage:
1: the state of not being married2 a: abstention from sexual intercourse b: abstention by vow from marriage

What in the world is a celestial virtue? Does that have something to do with the space god that demands said virtue?

There is way too little context to make any judgments here. Celibacy as practiced by nuns and celibacy as not practiced by young lay Americans are two very different things. Albeit, she may not understand one or both and still be a thoughtful, reasonable woman.

She doesn't understand it because the media says it isn't natural. We should all be out having sex by the time we are 10 or at least as soon as we hit puberty. Nothing is sacred anymore. By the time most kids reach 30 they have lived an entire lifetime almost.

whoe does. It is likely saying your against food. Celibacy is a great way to control the population of serfs andpeasants though. If you happen to be the church er I mean the ruling aristocracy.

People don't give up sex because they are against it. They do so because they understand how important it is. It's like if you give up eating mud for lent. The idea is that you give up something that is important to you.
