I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Celibacy

Page Six reports:

SOME roles just don't suit Natalie Portman. At the junket for the film version of his "Doubt," playwright John Patrick Shanley was asked how Amy Adams won the role of an emotionally conflicted nun. "I'm trying to think of what the etiquette is on this," Shanley chuckled, blushing a bit. Urged on by a blogger for gossipsauce.com, he continued, "Well, we asked Natalie Portman, and Natalie was very interested but kept saying she had a problem. And we finally nailed down as to what the problem was. She basically said she didn't understand celibacy."

Here's a trailer for the film, featuring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and, ahem, not Natalie Portman.

If I knew someone who looked like Natalie Portman, I sure as hell wouldn't understand celibacy, either! She makes all the blood drain from my brain.

Come to think of it, I don't know anyone who looks like her, and I STILL don't understand it.

Celibacy is for boring people. Portman is clearly not boring.

Not being celibate doesn't preclude safe sex.

They don't know what that is because it's forbidden by the invisible man.

Safe sex should be called safer sex. It does not necessarily mean that you won't get an STD.

I know STD stats for young people is a growing problem and in some areas and some diseases the increase is staggering. Check it out! We can quibble over semantics but it is no laughing matter when one's personal health is compromised.

I would consider it high praise - not being able to understand the motives of religious zealots.

Long ago my old anthropology prof said monogamy is the next best thing to celibacy.

In Matthew, Jesus hints at this, too.

Paul says it in 1 Corinthians.

Also, the Book of Revelation says that those who didn't lie with women (all men, mind you) get preferential treatment on Christ's return.

But, considering they thought the Rapture wold happen in their lifetime, it may have been easier.

That prof was probably sleeping with students.

Always beware the "it's natural" argument.

Celibacy is very to understand when you realize that most catholic priests are gay.

Celibacy has nothing to do with sexual preference, and everything to do with not having sex. A fairly obvious distinction.

Celibacy is under-rated.
I don't like promiscuous, anonymous sex,
I like close relationships that lead to sex.

I'm totally incapable of a healthy relationship with
a woman. I am selfish, moody and erratic.
My daughter is more generous - she just laughs
when she's asked if her dad is eccentric.

I am much happier living alone,
much more at balance with out
the inevitable shackles of a relationship.

Of course, I am not in my twenties -
then i certainly was not celibate, and
had absolutely no desire to be.
Intimacy was always important though.

Everybody here needs to read a bit about Ghandi....

Ghandi conquered his carnal desires so that he could focus on the welfare of his nation and common man.

I admire Ghandi but saying he "conquered his carnal desires" buys into a mind set (that we get mostly from Christianity and Islam) that somehow sex is inherently degrading or evil. That view usually goes hand in hand with believing that women are inferior. I don't accept it. Sex is beautiful and can be spiritual as well as physically enjoyable. If people want to be celibate that's a reasonable choice but it shouldn't be praised as some great accomplishment.

We assume that conquering his carnal desires means that Ghandi was a vegetarian.

Did he really conquer his desire or sublimate it?
I wonder how much this was due to his guilt for having sex with his new wife?
I thought he was incredibly introspective as well

Portman's views on celibacy are of little import one way or the other; she's a very bright girl and doubtless has many bright opinions...what was really cool about the article was that it introduced the trailer for what looks like an incredibly engaging movie; Streep and Hoffman in the same movie, acting against each other. Wow, that should be really good.

Celibacy is not a natural state. The Catholic religion is the only major religion that does not allow their clergy to marry. Is it any wonder they seem to attract a sexually deviant population?

That's not celibacy.
Your argument is as fatuous
as an argument that the
senate attracts such a population.

The argument isn't fatuous. I'm not saying I agree with it but it is a reasonable one. . There does seem to be a larger percentage of pedophiles in the catholic clergy than in the general population. So its reasonable to wonder if there is some causal relation, if either pedophiles are drawn to the priest hood or that something about the environment of being a priest (e.g. mandatory celibacy) encourages deviant tendencies that otherwise would remain dormant.
