Obama Assassination Plot Figures Plead Not Guilty

JACKSON, Tenn. — Two white supremacists accused of plotting to kill U.S. President-elect Barack Obama and dozens of other black people have pleaded not guilty to more federal charges in Tennessee.

Daniel Cowart of Tennessee and Paul Schlesselman of Arkansas were originally indicted on firearms and conspiracy charges. They have already pleaded not guilty to those counts.

Both men were then charged in a superseding indictment on Nov. 20 with civil rights conspiracy and Cowart with damage to religious property and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.

They went before a federal magistrate in Jackson on Wednesday where their attorneys entered pleas for them.

Cowart and Schlesselman have been held in a West Tennessee jail without bond since their arrests on Oct. 22.

It saddens me and many others to see this kind of thing still exists in our nation. It's even sadder to read some of the ad hominem attacks against them on this post. They are still human beings who especially now need the love and forgiveness of their creator.

Now, from a factual standpoint, any threat should be investigated and charges filed if credible, with punishment to the fullest extent of the law.

That goes for all those rightwing media pundits who used similar language against BHO during the campaign!!!!!

Why weren't they investigated or charged? That kind of speech is not protected.

Blame the republicans! We all know that this came straight from the top of the republican leadership, whoever that may be. One thing to consider is , you need to back up at least one generation. Racism is a learned trait. Merely throwing the book at these two, is reactive not constructive although they deserve what they get.

Properly prosecuted, assigning associated blame to parents will go a long way to eradicating this, parents will think twice of raising their offspring in a racist way.

That's a slippery slope -- we would love to prosecute anyone who brings their children up in a way we don't agree with, but it's very difficult to prove. Many people join hate groups all on their own (most learn from their parents), but we can't start dictating how they should raise their children.
