NEW YORK — The holiday shopping season begins Friday with a blitz of early morning specials. For some merchants, though, it's practically over already.

Piles of jewelry, clothing and electric drills are bypassing store shelves and heading straight to liquidators by the caseload as stores try to save as much cash as they can.

Major department stores and mall-based chains have cut prices up to 70 percent to move out mounds of excess inventory stuck in the pipeline since the financial crisis hit in September and people snapped their wallets shut.

Big moves of merchandise happen every year _ but usually after Christmas. This year stores are desperate to shed inventory even before Thanksgiving.

"The holiday season is over. The reason? It just never got started," said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst at NPD Group, a market research firm. "How cheap things are doesn't bode well for holiday success."

The deep price cuts even on luxury brands _ think 40 percent off on $5,000 Chanel suits and 70 percent off on designer shoes at Saks Fifth Avenue and 40 percent off $695 Ralph Lauren leopard-printed pumps at Bloomingdale's _ are only good news for the dwindling pool of consumers who are comfortable enough financially to take advantage of the deals.

Experts say discounts are only going to get even better as stores resort to more extreme measures to clear out unsold items. The value of coats and sweaters drops dramatically as the winter months wear on.

Still, there is some incentive for choosy consumers to buy early: increasingly lean inventories mean that certain colors, sizes and styles may sell out early. For those who are open minded, it's a bargain hunter's dream.

Story continues below

It wasn't supposed to be this bad. Stores, which typically place orders about four to seven months in advance, had cautiously planned their holiday inventories about 15 percent below last year's levels.

But because of the free fall in consumer spending, stores are now stuck with about 15 percent to 20 percent excess holiday inventory, estimated Burt P. Flickinger, managing director of Strategic Resource Group.

Richard D. Hastings, a consumer strategist with Global Hunter Securities, says the latest culprit _ fear of deflation _ is also causing stores to dump inventory. Clothing and other merchandise is worth less now than it was even three months ago.

"Prices are slipping too fast, and so by the time you sell the product, stores are not covering their operating expenses," he said.

But stores are only making matters worse. The more they discount and send to liquidators, the lower the prices become. Consequently, stores generate less in sales.

Still, in the current economy, they have no choice. Carrying inventory is a big expense, and stores need to preserve cash at a time of tightening credit.

At warehouses operated by Liquidity Services Inc., a leading online auction company for surplus goods, there are rows and rows of pallets of offloaded merchandise ranging from jewelry to consumer electronics.

At the company's Liquidation.com, which auctions surplus goods offered by stores and manufacturers to dollar stores and small businesses that sell on eBay, the number of auctions scheduled for the Thanksgiving weekend has soared to 2,100 _ eight times more than last Thanksgiving, said chief executive Bill Angrick.

In other words, what normally happens after Christmas is taking place this weekend, he said.

"This is about survival. This is not about muddling through the holiday season," Angrick said.

Inventory has doubled from a year ago at Overstock.com, which offers brand-name merchandise at discount prices, said CEO Patrick Byrne. Stores are unloading top-notch brands such as Gucci and Prada in recent weeks at a rate he's never seen in the company's nine-year history. And more is arriving by the truckload.

"It's like an avalanche," Byrne said.

The financial crisis, the meltdown in the stock market and cascading job losses have sent shoppers into full retreat. Even before the holiday season, stores were reporting the biggest drops in sales in decades.

Eileen Klockow, 41, doesn't expect to start her holiday shopping until mid-December, when the post-Thanksgiving rush ends and she can shop in leisure. An accountant from the Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa, Klockow said she's not procrastinating, just biding her time for sweeter deals.

"I'm waiting because I think sales will be better later in the month," she said.

How bad will the season ultimately be for stores? Mark Vitner, senior economist at Wachovia Corp., expects total retail sales to fall 0.5 percent for November and December. That would be the first decline in holiday sales since 1982.

In the last few Christmas seasons, analysts have worried about holiday sales making only weak gains. This year sales are expected to contract from a year ago, making this a do or die season for the weakest stores.

Profits are eroding quickly, and there have already been a string of bankruptcy liquidations from Mervyns LLC to Linens 'N Things. Circuit City Stores Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection this month, and analysts expect more to come.

Even for Overstock.com, there's a limit to all those Pradas it can buy.

Byrne noted that his buyers are becoming "gun-shy" as they calculate how much a pair of Prada shoes, for example, will be worth after Christmas if the discounts at stores get even deeper.

"If goods are not sold by Christmas, the value keeps going down," he said.

First time in our History the term "Black Friday" actually makes sense.

I think the "history" of using the term Black Friday as the day after Thanksgiving for retailers to "go into the black" is another one of those "traditions" that go back, oh, say, 8 or 10 years or so. Those who are ignorant of the past are condemned to....shop.

Hey! I want to "be somebody"!

I want to appear like I've acquired economic power that's resulted in an elevated socio-economic status and disproportional influence over the lives of those less successful then me!

The only way to acquire "economic power" is to spend less than you earn.
Earn 3 cents? save one cent.
Earning 3 cents and spending 4 is the road to economic slavery.
Don't blame capitalism, consumerism, advertising or anything outside yourself. You control what and how much you spend.
No one forces you to buy a house you can't afford, or live a lifestyle based on credit.
Keeping up with the Jones's is for weakling losers.
So is wanting a government bailout.
We are about 6% of the world's population consuming about 25% of the world's resources, yet in an economic downturn, we think the world is coming to an end.
What a bunch of wimps we are.

It's insane in my very middle-class L.A. neighborhood. I'm seeing glass on the street all the time. I'm not sure if I want to be in a big city when it gets really bad, I'm sure the crime rate is going to surge. How can it not if people can't afford to live?

Most of the stuff on these shelves is useless crap made in China that no one really NEEDS anyway. And because of the chronic ADD in this country, most of it will ultimately end up in a landfill adding to environmental decay. I guess the "green" revolution hasn't quite hit its stride yet.

Buying crap on sale, by way of glorious credit, is in fact putting oneself in further hock. It feeds the beast. Having that latest shiny battery powered piece of Chinese S**T just distracts us from the reality that we don't have any money. Then the bill comes.

We must recognize our financial limitations. Mr. Paulson wants more credit available to the American consumer so we will buy more "things" that we cannot afford nor need so his Bank buddies can continue to receive their annual bonuses - save the system to maintain the status quo.

Until we as Americans realize that we can no longer live beyond our means, we will never get out this rotten economy. Congress threw us off the gold standard in 1913, and since then we have been entrenched in this global system of Debt and Credit with nothing tangible to base our economy on - nothing. That is why the system is and always will be volatile.

Until we are ready to make some real sacrifices to change our economic system we will continue to go round and round until we all fall down. It is a blatant example of global insanity.

What the "intelligensia" doesn't seem to get is that there's no more means to live beyond. They think they can milk the cow forever without feeding it. You don't need bigger 700 billion/trillion dollar milking machines. They just need to feed the cow. It's not that there isn't credit. I still get plunty of credit card and loan offers in the mail. It's just that there's hardly anybody left who is worthy of it that wants it.

After working in retail for almost 20 years, I stay as far away as possible from any retail establishment the day after Thanksgiving. It's been almost 10 years since I've been out of retail and I am so glad I made that choice.

Someone gave me a pack of Trader Joe's multi-purpose sponges and it was one of my favorite gifts ever. It's really about resetting the whole "Christmas is Consumer-time!" mentality and CHANGING what you do to celebrate.

A homemade product or gift basket put together with handy items we need everyday means a lot more to the recipient than some GPS device from Circuit City, who is unfortunately liquidating. I loved this season's "disclaimer" in their ad: "items are extremely limited in quantity". Nice touch retailers!

I always love getting a simple bar of homemade soap or something like that. IT's thoughtful and useful. I'm like you, I get all happy when someone gives me a home item that I always need, like candles or dish towels.

LOL re: Circuit City.... the one near me had the worst staff in the world, except for 1 happy, helpful guy. The rest were bitter and evasive (there'd be tons of them milling about the store and I'd be the only customer and no one would help. Ridiculous!)

I dropped out of the x-mas "consumer" movement years ago. How stupid... people blowing $$ on decorations that they throw out (how nice for the environment), kill trees in unbelievably high numbers, get anxiety-ridden spending and shopping... what a waste.

I enjoy the holidays with friends and family w/some good food, wine, and singing. Who needs the rest of that cr@p??

Maybe this crash will be the herald of a new age where people aren't mired in over-the-top consumerism.

We usually draw names during Thanksgiving. We buy one gift. So everyone gets one nice gift on Xmas. Instead of everyone having to give a gift to everyone else. The only exception is for kids under 18. They are encouraged to have short wish lists and we coordinate so there are no duplicates. But this year the adults will be giving contributons to nonprofit organizations of choice in the name of the gift recipient.

I get the feeling we're not going to have another Christmas like we used to, for a long time. But while some of the CEOs and other Wall Street cowboys may have a tinge of guilt, they've got plenty of money to spend on gifts. They're probably hoarding it away though.

The good news is? I am happy about my decisions, I don't feel bad about it at all. I look at it this way, If we weren't paying off the BigCorp/Business debt For Them, maybe I would feel badly, but How on earth do they expect us to Pay Their Bills (bailout), Our Debt To them based upon our own credit purchases AND spend money on Christmas??? I'm 26. After graduation, mom and dad, gave me 1 month vacation to Europe. Upon my return, they literally threw me and my dog out. Shocked and teary eyed, I cursed them. Like my 3 older brother, they did the same thing, but being the only girl of 6 children, I'd be an exemption. WRONG. They did pay 1 year life insurance, auto insurance and 2 months rent. I was out in the cold. I hated them.

I was offered a job by the same company where I interned. Determined to survive - I learned to save, budget and use credit to my advantage. I bought my first house - a ROW. After home improvement, literally on peanut and jelly, and 2 years later, it sold it for $190,000.

I move to my dream home on my 23rd birthday - dilapidated huge stone house on an acre lot. I was becoming psuedo expert in home improvement. Back to peanut butter/jelly. Dad and my brothers helped me with painting, roof, floor repairs and landscaping. Mom made my curtains. I had them for dinner - spaghetti with meatballs on mixed-matched-dinged plates, pasta on a planter. We had a good laugh. I had prepared Pepto Bismol, just in case.

I decided to grow vegetable garden and screamed at the first sight of earth worms. My Dad was laughing hard. Now, I'm ok with them.

It took me a while to realized why Mom/Dad threw me out. I am glad.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Last December, I decided to decorate the trellis in front, but I wanted only to use old, some outdated (like a Snoopy ornament), and even broken ornaments that I already had. I couldn't spend a cent on the project. It proved to be so much fun and creative that I plan to repeat it this year. I've been saving glass mayo and dressing jars and plan to put old candles in them to light this year along with some of last year's decorations that survived (free Christmas cards impaled on P.F. Chang's free chop sticks and hung on the trellis "bled" when it rained, oops!).
This project doesn't help the economy, but it, and baking, have become part of my enjoyment of the season.
