Tom Cruise's "Valkyrie" Receives Terrible Early Reviews

Looks like the Razzies are confident in their prophesy that "Valkyrie" will land in their next derby, which commences on Jan. 21 when noms are unveiled. Last year the Razzie ceremony ended with big photos on stage of films they expect to see next year. Tom Cruise in that eyepatch got the biggest play -- and the most howls, guffaws and applause from the audience.

Now check out the far left column of their website and follow the link to Courtney Hazlett's "'Scoop" column at MSNBC.com. She gives her tattle report on a screening of "Valkyrie," which notes, "A scene where Cruise's character, Claus Von Stauffenberg, is forced to give the infamous 'Heil Hitler' salute. 'It's an unsettling scene but you almost start to laugh,' a source says. 'His character is resisting it but you never forget it's Tom Cruise saying 'Heil Hitler.' It's funny and shocking at the same time . . . .

Wow, I must say I'm taken aback about all the ill sentiment towards Cruise. Frankly I've never been a big fan, especially of his mission impossible films. But I must say, I'm ambivalent about him at most (minus the whole Oprah couch thing and the today show gaffe about Brooke Shields).

Nevertheless, he's been in some good movies e.g. Eyes Wide Shut, The Last Samurai, A Few Good Men, and Collateral (to name a few). Alternatively, he's been in sh**y ones as well like War of the Worlds, Mission Impossible series, and I wasn't a fan of Jerry Maquire much to the chagrin of many others.

But I must say when I saw the trailer to this new film, I thought it looked like it was going to be Great. Thus, I'm still going to watch it in spite of the so called bad reviews and the vitriol on this post.

Yo Dub Never pay to much credence to reviews. If a movie addresses something you are interested in you will probably enjoy it. Im not going to the movie to see Tom Cruise, its just a subject I find very interesting. Give the man credit for giving a historical event some needed attention.

Not to mention Cruise is practically a Stauffenburg look alike.

Previews hardly make Cruise seem authentic. Others in cast either have German accents or they're
Bristish, which, in Hollywood, always passes for German. Cruise, on the other hand, sounds neither.

Hopefully no one will spoil the ending as to whether Hitler was assassinated or not.

Spoil the ending indeed! Given the woeful scores on the recent polling, I bet too many ppl would find it a spoiler. I saw the trailer a few times and it sure seemed to me they were trying to suggest the ending was mysterious. Yikes.

Unfortunately TC's crazy has totally overshadowed everything else. Now I can't concentrate on characters he may play b/c it's Tom Cruise the crazy Scientology Freak in the movie.

Once someone's stardom gets too big, it totally overshadows whatever project they do. Instead of trying to draw viewers in with the star power, howz about giving an unknown a chance. Chances are the viewers will actually be allowed to concentrate on the STORY which is supposed to be the point, right?

Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe and Michael Douglas -- three people Cruise could take a number from. Each has managed to take many roles and lose themselves in those roles.

Oh, wait, Tom's not that good an actor... hmm... well, he could always kidnap and brainwash a younger actress and... oh, wait...

Kidman is a joke. She's just as horrible as Cruise. She's way over-rated.

C'mon, I thought she had a few good roles, "The Hours" (which she won an Academy Award for), "The Others", "Moulin Rouge", "To Die For". There are five films with her in them to avoid, any of the three she did with Cruise ("Days of Thunder", "Far And Away", and especially "Eyes Wide Shut" which was a travesty being that it was Kubrick's last directed film), "Birth", and "Bewitched". "Stepford Wives", however, is questionable.

A role about as believable as Colonel Klink and Sergeant Schultz.

I am suprised at how many people here don't like Cruise for his views and his antics a few years ago. Don't get me wroing, I thought he was annoying with the whole Katie Holmes Love Talk, and going at Matt Lauer about Post-Pardon Depression was as arrogant as you can get.

But if I let celebrities views, politics, and antics annoy, I wouldn't see ANY movies anymore. Most actors annoy the hell out of me with their liberal views, but I will never not see a person's movie because of that.

Even though Cruise went a bit loopy in the past few years when he was jumping on Oprahs couch, I still enjoy most of his movies. With the exception of those Mission Impossible movies, he always makes movies with an interesting story. Cruise doesn't do many 'dummy' movies that cater to the teen audience, and the trailer for this looks pretty good. It is an interesting historical event, but I just don't see this finding a wide audience because of the subject. I rarely go to the movies anymore, because stupid movies like James Bond does 70 million opening weekend, and I wonder haven't we seen this all before? But I will go out to see this Tom Cruise movie.

We should not underestimate the importance that the Von Stauffenberg Conspiracy played in German history. In recent years the culture is trying in a honest way to deal with their past. My friend from Munich told me how proud he was to wave the flag in a park during the World Cup without the whole world getting nervous. But the unfortunate truth was that their was so little support for Von Stauffenberg's rebellion when it occured. The failure of the coup resulted in another year of war and countless millions more deaths. Lets keep this in perspective.

I don't follow your statement that the assassination plot's failure prolonged the war and caused more deaths. The war was already in full swing when the plot was conceived and the attack carried out. Your assertion implies that Hitler was preparing to surrender to the Allies prior to the attempt on his life, which is clearly not the case. Von Stauffenberg and his cohorts deserve credit for at least trying to kill Hitler, and I think it is reasonable to infer that, if successful, they would have tried to negotiate a surrender to the Allies.

Love all the Americans and English guys talking in their regular voices and accents while pretending to be German. So credible. Not.

Nonsense. Why would an American talking with a German accent be credible? Stauffenberg did not have a funny accent. Either the actor talks German and is subtitled, or he talks in his native tongue.

Or do you need a big sign: Achtung, audience, this is a foreigner, beware?
