MUMBAI, India — Indian commandos killed the last remaining gunmen holed up at a luxury Mumbai hotel Saturday, ending a 60-hour rampage through India's financial capital by suspected Islamic militants that left more than 150 people dead and rocked the nation.

Orange flames and black smoke engulfed the landmark 400-room Taj Mahal hotel after dawn Saturday as Indian forces ended the siege in a hail of gunfire, just hours after elite commandos stormed a Jewish center and found six hostages dead.

More than 150 people were killed and several hundred wounded in the violence that started when more than a dozen assailants attacked 10 sites across Mumbai Wednesday night. Fifteen foreigners were among the dead.

"The Taj operation is over. The last two terrorists holed up there have been killed," Mumbai Police Chief Hasan Ghafoor told The Associated Press. J.K. Dutt, director general of India's elite National Security Guard commando unit, told reporters outside the hotel that his forces would continue to search and clear the hotel.

With the end of one of the most brazen terror attacks in India's history, attention turned from the military operation to questions of who was behind the attack and the heavy toll on human life.

The bodies of New York Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and his wife, Rivkah, were found at the Jewish center. Their son, Moshe, who turned 2 on Saturday, was scooped up by an employee Thursday as she fled the building.

Authorities scrambled to identify those responsible for the unprecedented attack, with Indian officials pointing across the border at rival Pakistan, and Pakistani leaders promising to cooperate in the investigation. A team of FBI agents was ordered to fly to India to help investigate.

On Friday, commandos killed the last two gunmen inside the luxury Oberoi hotel, where 24 bodies had been found, authorities said. Dozens of people _ including a man clutching a baby and about 20 airline crew members _ were evacuated from the Oberoi earlier Friday.

As fighting stretched into a fourth day Saturday, the Taj Mahal hotel was wracked by hours of intermittent gunfire and explosions, even though authorities said earlier they cleared it of gunmen.

Indian forces launched grenades and traded gunfire with what authorities believed was one or two militants holed up in the ballroom. What appeared to be a black-clad figure toppled from a first-floor window, but further details were unavailable.

By Friday evening, at least nine gunmen had been killed and one arrested, said R. Patil, a top official in Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is the capital.

In the most dramatic of the counterstrikes Friday morning, masked Indian commandos rappelled from a helicopter to the rooftop of the Chabad Lubavitch Jewish center as snipers laid down cover fire.

For nearly 12 hours, explosions and gunfire erupted from the five-story building as the commandos fought their way downward, while thousands of people gathered behind barricades in the streets to watch.

The assault blew huge holes in the center, and, at one point, Indian forces fired a rocket at the building.

Soon after, elated commandos ran outside with their rifles raised over their heads in a sign of triumph.

But inside the Chabad House was a scene of tragedy.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel's Channel 1 TV that the bodies of three women and three men were found at the center. Some of the victims had been bound, Barak said.

Local media reports, quoting top military officials, said two gunmen were found dead in the building.

The attackers were well-prepared, apparently scouting some targets ahead of time and carrying large bags of almonds to keep up their energy during a long siege. One backpack found contained 400 rounds of ammunition.

The gunmen moved skillfully through the blood-slickened corridors of the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels, switching off lights to confuse the commandos.

Authorities were working to find out who was behind the attacks, claimed by a previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen.

President-elect Barack Obama said he was closely monitoring the situation. "These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India's great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them," he said in a statement.

India's foreign minister said the blame appeared to point to Pakistan. "According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks," Pranab Mukherjee told reporters.

Jaiprakash Jaiswal, India's home minister, said a captured gunmen had been identified as a Pakistani.

Patil, the Maharashtra state official, said: "It is very clear that the terrorists are from Pakistan. We have enough evidence that they are from Pakistan."

Earlier Friday, Pakistani Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar denied involvement by his country. "I will say in very categoric terms that Pakistan is not involved in these gory incidents."

Sorta off topic: Is the hotel named after the Indian actress, Merle Oberon? I'm sure Jetta will know this bit of trivia and I expect to be lambasted for this post. However, I can take it and dish it out, too.

Pakistan is the main culprit in this terrorism ...Look at 911 & all plotters were captured in pakistan ..Taliban & Al Quida hide in Pakistan whose retired intelligence agency support taliban ...Unless the world come down hard on Pakistan & put sanctions on this country ..nothing will change ... Bush got suckered by them & provided $ to get their help ...The Pakistan Govt are very good at playing all sides & cry that they are doing something ...but nothing chnages .. Almost all terror related acts have some connection to Pakistan ..
Unless the world act together to warn this country ...This terror will go on ...

• State media Press Trust of India, citing Union Cabinet Minister Kapil Sibal, reported the gunmen had worked for months to prepare, even setting up "control rooms" in the two luxury hotels that were targeted.

I am 22 years old and live in mumbai.
I have never ever felt like this in my life before.
I am sad....really,really sad.
How can I see all this and not get reminded of it when I am having fun or being happy there?
These attacks have hit me really hard and I am just speechless.
Ive been watching movies and trying to get my attention diverted but these attacks have just shaken me to the core.
They said NYC was different, the feel, the vibe was different following the days in 9/11 and of course I felt sad but never IMAGINED WHAT THE COMMON NEW YORKER OR AMERICAN was going through
This Attack was different...It wasn't some bombs going off....These guys walked in and shot anyone and everyone they saw.A sad story was how 2 women were having dinner and these bastards came in and shot them point blank.
I do not know Islam or what it preaches but any goddamn religion where killing innocent, unknown civilians is acceptable is not good and must be eradicated.
I remember being on a flight about 3 years back and there was this moslem gentlemen sitting next to me.I asked him out of curiosity as to why are their evening prayers read out loud through speakers and he said they believed that whosoever heard them would be blessed by Allah and be converted.

I just came across your post. I live in NYC and was here during the attacks in 2001. Friends and relatives of friends and relatives perished that day. The entire city was traumatized. Everyone was walking around in a daze of grief and shock. There were posters of the missing everywhere. I was getting emails from strangers forwarded by friends: had I seen so and so's brother? Our hearts were so broken. But one beautiful thing that came out of this was an outpouring of love. And there were many many people in NYC who did not want the US government to violently retaliate against anyone. We did not want civilian casualties in Afghanistan because we now knew how it felt. We did not want to perpetuate the cycle of hate. We knew that whoever did this, did this and we did not want vilify an entire religion because of the actions of a few mon sters. I pray for you and your city. You will get through this. But we must not hold an entire religion responsible for the actions of a few. Think of Gandhi -- we have a statue of him here in a big square in our city. New York loves Mumbai.

No - Bush has not waged an effective and coordinated international police response to terrorism over the last 7 years. He never even succeeded in getting an international definition of terrorism recognized.

He instead opted for a military/nation-building response, which is entirely different, and as most experts now conclude a completely counter-effective response not to mention one that has helped bankrupt this nation.

We are at war on two fronts Iraq and Afghanistan. The government has its hands tied. So why not use the enemy of my enemy strategy to take care of Pakistan? Pakistan is a tinderbox.

There is still a wild card on the horizon: Iran. That is a very hard nut to crack, but I’m sure they’ll come up with a plan for them.

This is why I don't easily trade away the one asset I have in this contentious relationship: the love of the Iranian people.

I don't ask that population to choose between a sense of national pride and a sense of national fear and vulnerability. The nuke issue is the wrong one to fight over. I want to access the Iranian people, not turn them against the outside world that allows others around them to have nuclear power and/or weapons but denies the concept to them.

So I want to be extra discrete here: threatening Israel is a great way to bring about annihilation. Attacking them with nukes, either directly or through proxies, will bring about national annihilation--guaranteed.

Are you crazy? Pakistan has nuclear weapons. The government has rebuked these attacks. The head of Pakistan's intelligence has been invited to help in the investigation, which is unprecedented.

Please stop blaming the Pakistan government when we just don't know. Do you want to start a war?

Even though the mainstream media and some posters on this site have started accusing the known and not so known terrorist groups (and one country for that matter) for the horrible incident, I would like to mention the following regarding the timing of this incident:

1. The incident has occurred at the time of transition of Government from a discredited Bush to a cherished Obama. It seems as if the powers that be are ensuring that Pres-Elect Obama and his administration get caught in the same War on Terror trap that was laid down under Carl Rove’s Fear Factor, instead of showing some creativity in tackling the problem of terrorism. Do I need to remind HuffPo readers of the WMD’s that Bush and Blaire’s Administrations claimed that Iraq had and the US and British mainstream media projected without ever confirming or questioning the CIA claims.

2. The timing of the incident is also surprising because it has come soon after Pres-elect Obama’s statements that in order to fight the war on terror more effectively in the West of Pakistan, the USA needs to resolve the issue of Kashmir. Reportedly, that had irked India a great deal.

When the neo-cons saw they would no longer be in power, they started passing the torch to some of their Democratic counterparts.

It's not far out to suspect that neo-cons have infected all branches of government. Bush is leaving behind a little army of faithful neo-cons in lower government posts.

How can PE Obama be sure that he can rely on the intelligence he is being fed, if neo-con elements are all over the CI-A?

Will he end up having the same troubled relationship that JFK has with the C-IA? Look up CIA operations Northwoods and Mongoose.

It’s been written that JFK rejected operation Northwoods , and after the Bay of P-igs fired the Director and Deputy Director of the C-IA.

You also have to consider the fact that this government has used the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” strategy several times, ie “Charlie Wilson’s War”, arming OBL and the mujahadeen, and in the Iraq-Iran war providing intelligence, military and technical assistance to SH. It’s very ironic, that both OBL and SH ended up becoming the bogeymen for the war on ter-ror.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, "AIthough there was a clear Muslim majority in Kashmir before the 1947 partition and its economic, cultural, and geographic contiguity with the Muslim-majority area of the Punjab (in Pakistan) could be convincingly demonstrated, the political developments during and after the partition resulted in a division of the region. Pakistan was left with territory that, although basically Muslim in character, was thinly populated, relatively inaccessible, and economically underdeveloped. The largest Muslim group, situated in the Vale of Kashmir and estimated to number more than half the population of the entire region, lay in Indian-administered territory, with its former outlets via the Jhelum valley route blocked."

At the time of Partition, the subcontinent was broken into two parts: British India, directly administered by the UK, and the princely states, vassals of the Queen.
Provinces in British India could join either of the two new dominions, India or Pakistan, by referendum. For the princely states, however, the choice of joining India or Pakistan, or retaining independence, was entirely based upon the will of their rulers.
Kashmir was a princely state, ruled by the Dogras. The last king, Hari Singh, when faced with an irregular militia sent by Pakistan to conquer the fledgling kingdom, asked India for assistance, and in return signed an accession treaty with India.
By all international legal standards, Kashmir is a part of India. This includes Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, as well as the areas ceded by Pakistan to China. Yes, the Dragon has a stake in this battle as well (and I'm not referring to Rand al'Thor).
Having said that, most Indians are well and truly tired of the entire argument. We do not want a state whose people do not understand what it means to be an Indian, to be able to taste freedom and the right to economic happiness, while the rest of the subcontinent is mired in medieval traditions.
It's far better to get rid of that millstone hanging around our necks - time to embrace the future and not get bogged down by the tribalism of a culture whose savagery well and truly belongs to the Stone Age.
