MUMBAI, India — Indian commandos killed the last remaining gunmen holed up at a luxury Mumbai hotel Saturday, ending a 60-hour rampage through India's financial capital by suspected Islamic militants that left more than 150 people dead and rocked the nation.

Orange flames and black smoke engulfed the landmark 400-room Taj Mahal hotel after dawn Saturday as Indian forces ended the siege in a hail of gunfire, just hours after elite commandos stormed a Jewish center and found six hostages dead.

More than 150 people were killed and several hundred wounded in the violence that started when more than a dozen assailants attacked 10 sites across Mumbai Wednesday night. Fifteen foreigners were among the dead.

"The Taj operation is over. The last two terrorists holed up there have been killed," Mumbai Police Chief Hasan Ghafoor told The Associated Press. J.K. Dutt, director general of India's elite National Security Guard commando unit, told reporters outside the hotel that his forces would continue to search and clear the hotel.

With the end of one of the most brazen terror attacks in India's history, attention turned from the military operation to questions of who was behind the attack and the heavy toll on human life.

The bodies of New York Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and his wife, Rivkah, were found at the Jewish center. Their son, Moshe, who turned 2 on Saturday, was scooped up by an employee Thursday as she fled the building.

Authorities scrambled to identify those responsible for the unprecedented attack, with Indian officials pointing across the border at rival Pakistan, and Pakistani leaders promising to cooperate in the investigation. A team of FBI agents was ordered to fly to India to help investigate.

On Friday, commandos killed the last two gunmen inside the luxury Oberoi hotel, where 24 bodies had been found, authorities said. Dozens of people _ including a man clutching a baby and about 20 airline crew members _ were evacuated from the Oberoi earlier Friday.

As fighting stretched into a fourth day Saturday, the Taj Mahal hotel was wracked by hours of intermittent gunfire and explosions, even though authorities said earlier they cleared it of gunmen.

Indian forces launched grenades and traded gunfire with what authorities believed was one or two militants holed up in the ballroom. What appeared to be a black-clad figure toppled from a first-floor window, but further details were unavailable.

By Friday evening, at least nine gunmen had been killed and one arrested, said R. Patil, a top official in Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is the capital.

In the most dramatic of the counterstrikes Friday morning, masked Indian commandos rappelled from a helicopter to the rooftop of the Chabad Lubavitch Jewish center as snipers laid down cover fire.

For nearly 12 hours, explosions and gunfire erupted from the five-story building as the commandos fought their way downward, while thousands of people gathered behind barricades in the streets to watch.

The assault blew huge holes in the center, and, at one point, Indian forces fired a rocket at the building.

Soon after, elated commandos ran outside with their rifles raised over their heads in a sign of triumph.

But inside the Chabad House was a scene of tragedy.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel's Channel 1 TV that the bodies of three women and three men were found at the center. Some of the victims had been bound, Barak said.

Local media reports, quoting top military officials, said two gunmen were found dead in the building.

The attackers were well-prepared, apparently scouting some targets ahead of time and carrying large bags of almonds to keep up their energy during a long siege. One backpack found contained 400 rounds of ammunition.

The gunmen moved skillfully through the blood-slickened corridors of the Taj Mahal and Oberoi hotels, switching off lights to confuse the commandos.

Authorities were working to find out who was behind the attacks, claimed by a previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen.

President-elect Barack Obama said he was closely monitoring the situation. "These terrorists who targeted innocent civilians will not defeat India's great democracy, nor shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them," he said in a statement.

India's foreign minister said the blame appeared to point to Pakistan. "According to preliminary information, some elements in Pakistan are responsible for Mumbai terror attacks," Pranab Mukherjee told reporters.

Jaiprakash Jaiswal, India's home minister, said a captured gunmen had been identified as a Pakistani.

Patil, the Maharashtra state official, said: "It is very clear that the terrorists are from Pakistan. We have enough evidence that they are from Pakistan."

Earlier Friday, Pakistani Defense Minister Ahmed Mukhtar denied involvement by his country. "I will say in very categoric terms that Pakistan is not involved in these gory incidents."

The UN Security Council on 20 January 1948 passed ResoIution 39, establishing a special commission to investigate the conflict. Subsequent to the commission's recommendation, the Security Council ordered in its Resolution 47, passed on 21 April 1948, that the invading Pakistani army retreat from Jammu & Kashmir and that the accession of Kashmir to either India or Pakistan be determined in accordance with a plebiscite to be supervised by the UN.

This is getting so much attention because of the nature of it. Striking at the financial heart of a city, striking targets frequented by westerners and a Jewish center, these are the hallmarks of terror with which we, Americans and Europeans, are sadly familiar. (Americans having become only recently familiar)

When I lived in Europe, growing up in the 80's, I became painfully aware at how safe we were in America in comparison to other parts of the world. I had classmates from the Middle East who used to have to attend school showing up in bullet proof cars. When threats emerged against my family and others of us (who had parents in the EU and NATO) we had to search for a car bomb plant daily and our school was sandbagged and surrounded by military personnel frequently. Down the street, the Iranian embassy was always a frightening place for me - they burned American flags routinely and I also met a man whose family escaped the hostage crisis by the skin of their teeth.

When 9-11 occurred it brought back the same fears I experienced growing up in a volatile situation. I suspect these attacks, with their same familiarity, resonate with a lot of people in the US and in Europe in much the same way.

This attack is quite different from the usual suicide bombings so it gets more attention and I've seen reports about far more than just 3 Americans and 1 Jew.

According to Encyclopaedia Britannica, "Although there was a clear Muslim majority in Kashmir before the 1947 partition and its economic, cultural, and geographic contiguity with the Muslim-majority area of the Punjab (in Pakistan) could be convincingly demonstrated, the political developments during and after the partition resulted in a division of the region. Pakistan was left with territory that, although basically Muslim in character, was thinly populated, relatively inaccessible, and economically underdeveloped. The largest Muslim group, situated in the Vale of Kashmir and estimated to number more than half the population of the entire region, lay in Indian-administered territory, with its former outlets via the Jhelum valley route blocked."

This is precisely why India, after shaking off the shackles of British Imperialism, created an entire country for the Muslims--Pakistan. And even that is not enough. I understand that your average, run of the mill, Muslin is probably just as peaceful as your average Born Again Christian. And I know that Christian history--in fact any religious sect's history--is one of blood, terror, and cruelty; it seems to be a phase that they ALL go through. And for each of them, it is usually the fault of extremist religious fanatics more interested in power than in The Word.

But the Muslims have been going through this since Muhammad and don't show any inclination to change. If their most revered religious leaders were to come out against this in a unified fashion, make a public policy statement of an international nature, reassuring their people that violence is wrong and will not be tolerated, it might help to quell even the internecine violence that is a day to day reality for Shia and Sunni in places like Iraq. Because it seems that when they aren't busy killing the "Infidel" they still delight in killing one another, and that's got to be hard on your average believer...

I think there is a transformation happening on our little blue planet.

This type of mindless violence is dinosaur behavior of a previous age.

Our world is ready for something new.

Glad to see there are many of us who can see past the smoke and mirrors.

In the last 7 years, almost every single international terr.orist attack was launched or was put together in the Afghanistan/Pakistan border region.

There have been ZERO interanational attacks launched from Iraq.

According to NDTV, these details emerged after interrogation of couple of captured terrorists:
This was an operation that came out of Pakistan - 40 total terrorists: 29 Pakistani and 11 Bangladeshi
20 of them had entered Mumbai a week ago. (So probably means there are still 20 sleepers??)
They were trained by LET in Pakistan
The remaining 20 left by boat from Karachi, hijacked a fishing trawler and used smaller boats to reach shore. And carried out these attacks.
Evidence was corroborated by cell phone records from a mobile found on a dead terrorist.
