In this undated photo provided by Chabad.org, Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, left, and his wife Rivkah Holtzberg, the directors of Chabad-Lubavitch of Mumbai, India, are shown. The Holtzberg's were at one of the sites attacked by suspected militants in Mumbai, Nov. 26, 2008. NEW YORK — A New York couple who recognized the threat of terrorism in India but believed their mission of spreading Jewish pride was greater than the potential danger were slain in a series of attacks across Mumbai that have killed at least five Americans.

Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg, 29, and his wife, Rivkah, 28, died in the attack on the ultra-Orthodox Chabad-Lubavitch movement's center in Mumbai, Rabbi Zalman Shmotkin said in New York.

The group said three other victims in the building apparently had been visiting there. Shmotkin said the dead included Bentzion Chroman, an Israeli with dual U.S. citizenship; Rabbi Leibish Teitlebaum, an American from Brooklyn; and an Israeli woman whose name was not released. The Israeli Foreign Ministry said the body of a fourth victim, an unidentified woman, was also found inside the five-story building.

Some of the victims had been bound.

The Holtzbergs' toddler son, Moshe, was rescued by an employee and taken to his grandparents.

More than 150 people had been killed since gunmen attacked 10 sites across India's financial capital, Mumbai, also known as Bombay, starting Wednesday night, officials said.

Also killed were a man and his teenage daughter from a Virginia community that promotes a form of meditation, a colleague said Friday. Alan Scherr, 58, and daughter Naomi, 13, died in a cafe Wednesday night, said Bobbie Garvey, a spokeswoman for the Synchronicity Foundation.

The U.S. State Department confirmed their deaths.

Story continues below

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the deaths of the three victims from New York were "tragic losses" for the city. He said Teitelbaum, a Brooklyn native who moved to Jerusalem several years ago, was a kosher food supervisor.

"Our hearts go out to these families and to the many New Yorkers of all different religions and ethnicities who have been affected by the attacks," he said.

Members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement gathered at the group's headquarters Friday to pray for the families of the dead.

"Gabi and Rivky Holtzberg made the ultimate sacrifice," said Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman of the educational arm of Chabad-Lubavitch.

"As emissaries to Mumbai, Gabi and Rivky gave up the comforts of the West in order to spread Jewish pride in a corner of the world that was a frequent stop for throngs of Israeli tourists," he said.

Shmotkin said at least three of the five victims at the center held U.S. citizenship: Teitlebaum was an American from Brooklyn, while the Israeli-born rabbi, who moved to the U.S. as a child, and Chroman both had dual Israeli-U.S. citizenship. Officials here were not sure whether Rivkah Holtzberg, also born in Israel, had obtained dual citizenship.

Twelve hours after gunmen stormed the center Wednesday, Sandra Samuel, a cook at the center, heard little Moshe's cries outside the room in which she had barricaded herself. She opened the door, grabbed the toddler and ran outside with another center worker. The little boy's pants were soaked with blood, and Samuel said she saw four people lying on the floor as she fled.

Kotlarsky said Holtzberg's last known call was to the Israeli consulate. He said that "the situation is not good" before the phone went dead, according to Kotlarsky.

The Holtzbergs arrived in Mumbai in 2003 to run a synagogue, provide religious instruction and help people dealing with drug addiction and poverty, Kotlarsky said.

Hillary Lewin, a New Yorker met the Holtzbergs last summer at the center in India, said both the rabbi and his wife were aware of possible terrorism, but believed their mission was greater than the potential danger.

Their attitude was "If I don't do it, who's going to do it?", Lewin said.

Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky said Moshe will turn 2 on Saturday. "Today, he became an orphan," he said. A second son, who has been ailing, was with relatives in Israel when the attack happened. A third child died earlier this year of a genetic disease, the group said.

The Scherrs were among 25 foundation participants in a spiritual program in Mumbai. Four others on the mission were injured in the cafe attack in the luxury Oberoi hotel, Garvey said, including two women from Tennessee.

"I would call them bright stars," Garvey said of the Scherrs. "Extraordinary, bright, very positive _ examples to the world."

Scherr was a former college professor who lived at the Synchronicity sanctuary about 15 miles southwest of Charlottesville. His wife, Kia, and her two sons did not travel with them to India.

According to the foundation's Web site, the community is led by Master Charles, a former leading disciple of Swami Paramahansa Muktananda. He is described as "one of the most popular spiritual teachers from India to build a following the West in the 1970s." He taught a form of yoga.

Garvey identified the Synchronicity injured as Helen Connolly of Toronto, who was grazed by a bullet; Rudrani Devi and Linda Ragsdale, both of Nashville, who both underwent surgery for bullet wounds; and Michael Rudder of Montreal, who remains in intensive care after being shot three times. Other members of the mission narrowly escaped the attack.

Terrorists seek to devide. They seek to divide Jews from Catholics Christians from Muslims, Indians from Pakastini's and Eastern a from the West. Don't let them do it.

Terrorists are bad people that all people must shun. Pakastinis must not tolerate this assault on civilization . . . the Pakistani people abhor it . . . their government must act to reflect this national sentiment. India knows that the Pakastini people hate this . . . . India must respect the Pakastini people and not hold them responsible. A people cannot always be responsible for the policies of their government . . . speaking of, GW Bush, time for you to step up to the plate, speak to Obama, craft an American response, let Obama speak for America, we denounce these antics, don't engage in them and will actually fight a war on terrorism . . you being the first birds to raise your ugly heads . . . we will join with Pakistan and India and focus on you.

Perhaps the first thing that should happen is Condi Rice and Hillary Clinton should go to Mumbai and meet with the leaders of both Pakistan and India. This would be a huge move that demonstrates to the world that America is one country and despite our political divides, we are a power of one . . . think big, do it for America.

not a bad idea. except that this brand of terrorists (which do not deserve 'neogitations', just elimination) derides women as less than men.

india is a country under seige as we are under terror. they deserve our moral and political support.

Several years ago when I visited Latin America, I found true believing religious Americans cavorting around those countries trying their damnness to convert those religiously superstitutious people.
It is the same today, even more so, as Americans have turned from the practical challenges and problem solving of living to the mystical and profound meanings and ends of all mankind.
A half century ago, Munbai would have been possessed of American business types selling and constructing earth moving machines and factory equipment for improving the human condition.
Now the interests of our travelling Americans is in the spirit and preparation for a better world hereafter.
As our citizens lose the competence of the science and technology that moves mountains they are possessed by the spirit that moves mountains.

Good that they have faith to move mountains, but do they have sufficient faith to move the mountain of an intransigent Israel to make a comprehensive peace by getting out of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and letting the establishment of a bona fide Palestine with full sovereignty, each living in security and peace, with economic interdependence forthcoming. Is their faith sufficient to move that Israel which we all know so well in its every preemptive move borne in vicious cyclical , iron-fisted bombardment of Palestinians. Can that mountain of Israeli expansionism be moved? We have to have the faith to move that mountain in order to have faith in ourselves as a country adhering to basic principles of justice for all. Each one of us Americans has to have the courage to stand up for what is right, and to demand that our politicians get off the dole of AIPAC and its affiliates.

The Palestinians had the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem as a capital and it was not good enough. Why? and what was their course of action? A war of annihilation. Which they lost.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:45 PM on 11/28/2008

As there never was a "bonafide" Palestine, giving those areas back is not possible. Palestine is a modern construct. Israel is an ancient construct. It is the Arab world, and Islam, that stands in the way of progress

They gave up a lot of territory they won before in the wars with the Arab states. Its possible if all parties are willing to come to the table and work things out. The Rocket attacks, suicide bombings etc are things that need to be rejected though by Palestinians, I feel there is a lot of blame to go around on both sides at this point.

They have tried repeatedly to make peace and failed. Blame goes both ways: to Arafat and Barak. Right now the Palestinians are split. Fatah controls the West bank and hamas the Gaza Strip which Israel left unilaterally (so much for your expansionism argument). For you to discuss this within the context of this post indicates you have no sympathy for this New York family who were killed. It is sad commentary. As a liberal and a HuffPo regular, it saddens me to see those, like yourself Kirby whose political views are so rigid and uninformed that you have lost the capacity to feel for human loss.

I am Jewish and I feel terrible for the plight of the Palestinians and have continuously argued that, absent a peace treaty between Israel and the Palestinians terrorism would continue. But that will not be the only solution to this problem. Hatred is a big problem too.

Yours is a barely understandable comment, but I want to try. The same people who used to push physical progress onto the rest of the world have been, largely, successful. The Indians can now do that for themselves. But religious proselytizing is mandated by most of the major religions of the world. It has nothing to do with losing competence in science and technology! That is still going on, despite our pitiful institutions of learning and the chokehold on them by liberals, the NEA, and Democrats who would rather our children live on the streets than admit they were always wrong.

What on other are you blabbing about!!?? Of course faith and religion is antithetical to learning. Faith in its essence is a complete surrender to rational though, and the complete embrace of concepts that are far from reality. Your second comment about liberals and institutions of learnings is just plain ridiculous. If anything, the last couple decades as evangelicals increase their strong hold inside the conservative base they have also manage to convince conservatives that intellectualism is against their moral values. Evangelicals make it quite clear that the bible is the only source of true education and that everything else is a distraction manned by "the evil one". Perhaps you should take your hollow comments somewhere else.

Just to clarify, this rabbi and his family were not proselytizing. Judaism doesn't seek converts, it actually discourages them (and for good reason, since Jews are so often sought out for to be killed). The Chabad House was there to support the small Jewish community in Mumbai and would often host Jewish travelers, tourists or business people, who happend to be passing through.

That said, the level and extent of antisemitic hatred at the Huffington Post is astonishing and quite frightening. It's amazing what you can do from your basement these days.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:04 AM on 11/29/2008

The Chabad Jews weren't there to convert Hindus. They proselytize only to less-observant Jews, not to other religions.

I despise the notion that fundamentalists might serve in the American political system but the idea that, because of that view, they deserve to die, is barbaric. A person whose views are ignorant should not run our country but their right to live, so long as they are peaceful, has just as much right to continue living as you or I. Must be sad to be filled with so much hate that you wish those who believe differently than you have less of a right to live. Not very evolved in my book.

No matter what the reasons are, nothing can justify this killings of civilian populations. I am sure though that people will wake up one day and realize that religion is not the cause of this mess. Islam is used like a tool to justify their twisted ideology.

Some people seem uncomfortable with the attention paid this particular couple.
But let's assume that it is because (1) the group they represented simply gave out information right away (it's harder and longer to get info on more private citizens), and (2) that story about the rescued two-year-old covered in blood probably prompted questions about the parents.

It's tragic that all and any died in this vicious political violence: the parents of this toddler, the two children of that Indian mother, the father and daughter, all of them, Indian, Western, whatever. They will all be mourned and missed.

Please present the evidence in support of this accusation.

Here is an alternate viewpoint, no evidence either, just a viewpoint:

There is Narendra Modi’s factor of the state of Gujrat. Let us remember that the extremist Hindus under the extremist leadership of former Chief Minister Modi had massacred Muslims, many burnt alive, in that state after hearing the news that a train of Hindu pilgrims was torched by Muslims at Godhra. In September 2004, a panel appointed by the central government and headed by former Supreme Court judge UC Banerjee to probe the Godhra train fire concluded that the fire was accidental. This incident could be a continuation of that gory saga

All lives, whether Christian or Jews, are precious and it is very sad that Huffington Post has reported the death of two Jews on the top of the page, while the death of an American father and his daughter, who are Christians, has been posted way down on the page.
