Obama's First Foreign Policy Test

President-elect Barack Obama campaigned on deploying additional U.S. troops to Afghanistan -- and, potentially, taking military action in Pakistan -- as part of a renewed focus on a neglected war against Al Qaeda and its Taliban allies. When he takes the oath of office Jan. 20, he'll inherit a far different regional picture in South Asia than his campaign could have anticipated.

Over the past several weeks, developments in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India pose new challenges for the U.S. mission in Afghanistan. The Karzai government in Kabul has dramatically moved to bring the war to a conclusion -- announcing the pursuit of far-reaching negotiations with the Taliban-led insurgency and calling, for the first time, for a U.S. timetable for withdrawal.

Obama should go on vacation, the man is in desperate need of it, especially after running a long hard fought campaign. Umm, this title is wrong...as many have already written, Bush is still the President. I don't know how much more Obama can do besides what he has done...sent out statements. Bush makes the decisions, not Obama

There is a reason it is called an economic "panic."
It isn't just the United States' citizenry that has lost confidence in Bush's ability to understand problems and respond appropriately.
What Obama has been doing has helped to calm nerves, and helped to stop the panic.
There is a huge and tremendous amount of real work to be done to fix our nation, but just knowing that Obama is getting ready to replace the child now in the White House with an adult team is already reassuring and calming the entire world economic market.

agree with you about taking a "chill pill" not so sure about the "smoke the weed" part ( though maybe I should consider it). It seems like Obama is expected to take on too much before his time. Bush is just too loudly quiet on the western front. There is still some time to redeem himself but he seems to be waiting it out, no wonder Obama feels pressured to take stands while having to remind the people there is only one president at a time. Reminds me of a slacker I worked with where I had to pick up his work as well. Seriously president Bush, I may not be a fan but I still feel for your situation even if you created it yourself....make a graceful exit, there is still time!

During the primaries Obama said he would concentrate on Pakistan and Afghanistan. Folks called him crazy. During the campaign he maintained his stance on those regions and it has turned out to be very sincere. The radical Muslim terrorists are afraid of what he's capable of doing to dent their world domination.

If radical Muslims had their way, Israel would be in the sea with Jews having no home and all females would be second class citizens obeying their husband's rules while they continued to blow up the world.

He is only candidate I've heard say that in order to address the situation in Pakistan you need to address the relationship with India and Kashmir. It looks like the terrorist attacks was about the issue of you guessed it Kashmir.

That is why it so important for Obama to be in that White House he has the uncanny ability to see these problems before they erupt.

While the thought of Bush doing anything scares me, he is STILL the POTUS! Unless this situation continues until Jan. 20th it is NOT Obama's first foreign policy test. And I would say that this is India's foreign policy test right now. They aren't even sure about all the details yet. Shouldn't we see what their leaders want to do first? I didn't realize the US POTUS made policies for the entire world.
