On this Sunday's 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper has an interview with Olympic hero Michael Phelps.

During the interview, Cooper challenged Phelps to a race, with a few conditions to try and even out the playing field.

Phelps had to swim underwater, with no breathing, and could only use his legs. Cooper also got to dive in while Phelps could only push off the wall.

Plus, Phelps has not really been training since the games and is, for him, sort of out of shape.

So who won?

Every time I see Michael Phelps the first thing that comes to my mind is, "Man, is this guy ugly!" Maybe it's because I'm guy who can't appreciate a another guy in a somewhat bulging speedo. No one can deny Phelps is one hell of a swimmer and athlete, but if he didn't have those gold medals hanging around his neck I doubt most women would give him the time of day -- bulging speedo or no.

I'm gay and, honestly, wasn't looking at his "bulging speedo." Ugly? Are you nuts? He's interesting looking and I'm sure he's always had a line of women (and men!) following him. He seems to have his feet on the ground and is just a normal guy. Not sure why anyone wouldn't go for him, olympian or not.

Anderson Cooper is useless. That was one of the most uninformative, uninteresting segments I have ever seen on 60 Minutes.

I wonder if part of the reason Anderson lost is because he's like almost a foot shorter than Phelps.

Nothing sexier than a naturally muscular human body. Oh I think I'm gonna watch Michael swimming again on my DVR.

Because she's out and he's not. He's hiding and that indicates weakness and people love to pounce on that. There in lies the problem for all closeted people afraid to take that leap into public acclaim and disapproval. They are demonstrating their lack of courage and acceptance of themselves while allowing the dominate culture to tell them who they should be and how they should act. So the culture not only dictates the identity chose for the individual but slams them when the truth seeps out. It's a loose/loose for everybody.

There is no problem with his being gay. Yes, it is his business who he sleeps with and not ours. Agreed.

The problem is he hides it. He goes to lenghts to cover it up, to make sure that he is rarely photographed with Julio or whoever he is with.

He may be ashamed of being gay and/or he may feel it will hurt his career. I don't know.

He runs around in N.Y. going to Gay clubs and establishments with men and has been identified as having male lovers. The man is worth millions yet is afraid to speak out for himself his significant other or identify the cause of his concern for Gay issues (which he does reports on frequently). This should give everyone a good idea how much pressure, bigotry and oppression the straight community can level.

donvey lindsey did they really have to do that

What gay man (or straight woman) could say they wouldn't love to get into a pool with Michael Phelps in a skimpy bathing suit - especially if the locker room has communal showers? For straight guys, replace Phelps with Angelina Jolie or Beyonce - if you had it within your power, you would too.
12:19 PM on 12/02/2008
What?!?! What does this segment have to do with being gay? What an amazing opportunity to race the greatest swimmer in the world? Who wouldn't jump at that chance?
10:25 AM on 12/01/2008
Anderson Cooper is the poster child of "mediocrity" with a few exceptions.

Cooper propelled himself with some decent Katrina coverage where he called out and somewhat humiliated some politicians.
He parlayed that into what is now a self-serving "aw shucks" faux humility which bores through almost every segment he feels the need to turn the camera around to involve himself in.

Anderson Cooper has taken a promising career in journalism and turned it into being one step up from a being a game show host.

Bow chicka bow bow!

Just kidding.

Seriously, why can't more journalists interview people in the swimming pool? Imagine Maria Bartiromo interviewing Sumner Redstone in a swimming pool. Or CNN's Jeffery Toobin interviewing Ruth Bader Ginsberg in a swimming pool?
