Anderson

On this Sunday's 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper has an interview with Olympic hero Michael Phelps.

During the interview, Cooper challenged Phelps to a race, with a few conditions to try and even out the playing field.

Phelps had to swim underwater, with no breathing, and could only use his legs. Cooper also got to dive in while Phelps could only push off the wall.

Plus, Phelps has not really been training since the games and is, for him, sort of out of shape.

So who won?

Somebody help me out please! Just wtf was Greta's plastic surgery supposed to fix? This "thing" is just as ugly as she was before her surgery! Greta is one nasty looking gal!

It's a side effect from when they surgically removed her integrity - a requirement for working for FOX Noise.

Weren’t the words “In a Swimsuit” somewhat redundant in the title of this post? I can understand how including that information would come in handy if Anderson Cooper was wearing a swimsuit while competing in something other than a pool, but does anybody believe that Anderson Cooper is such a media stud that he would wear overalls and a cape while racing against the most successful swimmer of all time?

I feel terrible for thinking so, but when I think Anderson Cooper, I think "gay"...nothing wrong with being gay, but I think gay...and then I think "Can we pul-leeeeese stop talking about Michael Phelps!"

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:21 AM on 12/01/2008

It didn't take the Phelps interview for us to know Anderson is gay. That has been known for a long time.

You all sound like a bunch of republicans......"ooooh two guys swimming in a pool, they must be gay, thank goodness we voted for prop 8." Who Cares?!!!!

No I wasn't aware that Cooper was gay. And I really could care less. Same for Phelps.

And what is with all of this homophobia going on here?

and even if your Dad is a total loser you can make your own successful life. (thanks to a supportive Mother)

So all these anti-gay marriage indiots who claim kids NEED to have a mother and a father. tell that to Phelps.

I even tell single parents that too. Children need both sexes whether you want to believe that or not. You can pull successful stories out of the inner city too but that doesn't mean the majority will achieve the same way.

Actually, they don't use the word "need". Just as we don't *need* 100% fairness in life to do well, we don't *need* a mother and father, but in both cases, they are best to have.

The best advice I ever heard on this subject was to come out in relationship. That way, it's more natural, less awkward, and less political. I continue to believe that coming out - when, how, to what extent, etc. - is a highly personal decision and should be treated as such.

Having said that, it's always fun to see celebrities come out, for example Lance Bass. It's a very cool thing to do. BTW, Michael Phelps looks great as usual!

The reason it's a "personal matter" to "come out" is because the individual is terrified that they will be rejected and lose social standing. The dynamic of out right discrimination in the work place and with friends or family was created by society with the reluctant agreement of the oppressed individual. Thats why it's so important to be truthful. The more people hide who they are the less acceptable their orientation is to themselves and everyone around them. These secrets will make you and everyone around you sick.

Anderson has never come out at least that he has never said it to the public, though his family and friends must know.

The t.v. audience wouldn't be covertly snickering at you if you'd come out Anderson. Come out to your family and the public. You owe it to your community and to the history of the Gay struggle in America. You've talked about your Mother and brother - all very personal, but the most important contribution to your biography should be your own personal honesty about your sexual orientation. After the disgraceful anti-Gay marriage props. that passed your obligation to the LGBT community at large is even more pressing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:31 PM on 11/30/2008

it is his own choice to come out or not. suggesting that he should because of moral obligation to the public is ridiculous. If it shouldn't matter sooo much that he's gay why does he have to come out and say it. If he doesn't want to publicly proclaim that hes gay he doesn't have to. he's entitled to a private life even as someone in the media. just because you don't go around flailing your arms and telling everyone you're gay and doing interviews about coming out etc doesn't mean your lying or hiding your "real" orientation.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:19 AM on 12/01/2008

Members of the LGBT community, of all people, should be the last to pressure people into coming out. I find it immensely hypocritical.

Coming out is an extremely personal issue. I would know from experience. And one should only come out until he/she feels comfortable doing so, until he/she feels comfortable with who he/she is. Not sooner. And certainly not because of pressure from the gay community.

The assumption that Anderson Coopers owes it the the gay community to come out is absolutely ridiculous. The assumption that no viewers would object to his sexuality is also ridiculous. If he chooses to stay closeted for the rest of his life, then that is his choice. It's an unfortunate one, for I believe that if he was open with it, he'd lead a happier life (but who's to say he's not). But regardless of my personal feelings on the issue of coming out, it is everyone's own decision to do so.

It really strikes me how people feel it's a matter of choice if one "comes out". How do you or millions of others imagine people are suppose to live a happy life if being Gay isn't considered acceptable even by the people who are Gay.

People will never make it comfortable for you to come out - that's the nature of the oppression. It's a leap of faith that being "out" will do you and everyone ultimately more good than not. I'm sorry if you have had to suffer the slings and arrows the rest of us have had to or maybe worse... seriously. But when a person stays closeted and lives a public life the information comes out. We don't live in an alternate universe. The help Anderson will do by coming out will be a bi-product of his honesty. The first help he does will be for himself.

This whole story just gives me the creeps. I don't know about Cooper anymore. I used to enjoy him but I think he took the "keeping them honest" bit too far. He has been proven wrong on more than one occassion and he is starting to come off as arrogant.

I couldn't disagree more. Of all the reporters on broadcast TV and/or cable, Anderson Cooper is among the best. He may have made mistakes on some occasions (who doesn't?), but he obviously makes an effort to be unbiased and just report the news. I don't see the arrogance that you see. I see a man confident in his skills and justifiably proud of his abilities, not arrogance at all.

nope. that wasn't my first thought at all. My first thought was, " can't this media clip load any faster !? Anderson Cooper in a swimsuit........rawr! " And I wasn't disappointed. Yes, I know he's batting for the other team, but I can still look.

I didn't think that at all. I think it's pretty ridiculous how many people view so many instances in social situations through a simplistic "Gay" / "Not Gay" lens.

QUESTION: If you had the opportunity, say, with a pool nearby (or even simply accessible at some point in the future), would you possibly challenge Phelps to a swim? I mean, you know you're going to lose, but would it not be AWESOME to swim against him regardless?

OR would you be the type who would restrain yourself from doing something cool like that for fear of what other people will think? And if you do it one situation, I would bet you do it in many. Anyone who does needs to get over it and just live.

Who's to say Anderson wasn't a swimmer in college or at some point in the past which would make the challenge even more understandable. I am single, in my 30's and straight, and I would challenge him in a heartbeat given the opportunity...JUST FOR FUN and for bragging rights. And THAT is the what I first thought when I saw the video. OMG imagine that!

"Gay" vs. "not gay" may be the thing that receives the most attention in the social sphere today, but there is SO much more involved in human social interaction than that. Sorry for the rant, it's just a pet peeve of mine. ;)

Nope, my first thought was I like Phelps' and admire his stamina, and wanted to see if Anderson was in decent shape and could keep up.

'Gay-not Gay' is so 90s ,and the hallmark of the sexually insecure whether they are gay or str8..

Get with it.
