New York Times:

The Labor Department is racing to complete a new rule, strenuously opposed by President-elect Barack Obama, that would make it much harder for the government to regulate toxic substances and hazardous chemicals to which workers are exposed on the job.

The rule, which has strong support from business groups, says that in assessing the risk from a particular substance, federal agencies should gather and analyze "industry-by-industry evidence" of employees' exposure to it during their working lives. The proposal would, in many cases, add a step to the lengthy process of developing standards to protect workers' health.

Bush is going to look after his cronies right up to the last minute, he dosnt care about rules its the payback he gets for making the rules, why is Bush allowed to use his office like this without penalty. , he has done nothing useful but now he wants to antagonise the new administration, people couldnt think worse of him than they already do ,hes got nothing to lose.

Ever notice that George Bush and Sarah Palin have never been in the same room at the same time.

Why is everyone so surprised at this latest action by the bush administration?

They're Straussian Neocons by definition. Strauss taught his students, (some of which belong to the administration, most notably Cheney, Chertoff, Bolton, Wolfowitz, Feith, and Perle, to name just a few) to lie, cheat, steal, plunder, pillage, etc.

The neocons needed to create an enemy and they did in Al-Qaeda, which was an invention by the CIA.

There's so much more, just google Leo Strauss.

Anyway, it is no surprise to me that they're doing what they're doing.

The bush administration are a bunch of heartless thugs.

I agree... except that is more Milton F.r.i.e.d.m.a.n than Strauss.

For someone so apparently in love with Jesus Christ, Bush doesn't follow His teachings. Raising those co-payments for health care for the poor? You think Jesus would have voted yes or no on that one.

When the mentally unstable are unaware of their state of mind strange things can happen - Bush apologists will go to their graves believing in the greatness of dear leader (see Sean Hannity).

off-topic...if you think Bush is stupid, look at this:

When Blair was in power, the Labour gov't acquired a reputation for being the kings of doing stunts when bad news about Labour er.upted or was about to e.rupt. Usually the stunt would have something to do with ter.ror. For example, they would do a big raid on the home of some 'ter.ror suspect' (alerting the press to be there when the vans, men and dogs arrived).

In the past two days there have been stories about some of the ter.rorists in Mumbai being of British citizenship. This would, if true, embarrass Brown no end. (Especially given the fact that Labour has just about turned over the running of its domestic policy to the Mu.slim Council Of Britain, who, cleverly, convinced them that if they'd just 'be more accomodating to mus.. would reduce the risk of ter.ror att.acks AND reduce the number of homegrown ter.rorists in Britain.

Lo and behold, they have done another raid! But not on a 'suspected' mu.slim ter.rorist but on the home of a Tory MP! The story is true but almost unbelievable and it looks as if Brown overreached in trying to find a stunt that would not get the Mus.lim Council of Britain riled up again. As stunts go, this is the one that Labour will never live down:

As tensions mounted earlier today in the minds of some bloggers around the world authorities were alarmed to find that the sale of tinfoil had increased by astronomical figures. Asked if it could have anything to do with the holiday seasons, an unnamed source said that "this would normally be the case, but due to economic factors the sale of holiday food has decreased."

As reported earlier this week, intense viοlence broke out when one hemisphere of the wοo wοo's "collective braίn" started shellίng the other hemisphere as an over-populace of fear shelled an abandoned village of reason. Even though no ground was gained the wοo wοos claimed victory.

Raise, Spiritquest, Matteodean and other "victors" of the small community are the suspects of the latest tinfoil buyout.

Investigations are under way to determine if this is not simply a ploy by Reynolds Aluminum in order to create false demand and if the members of "The Toaster is Reading My Mind Organization" are in fact being subsidized by the corporation.

When asked to comment on this story Raise mumbled, "Build a burger... build a burger" and was last seen applying at White Castle after renting a copy of "Field of Dreams"

The thing of it is, Bush does NOT have the Constitutional authority to do ANY of this.

ONLY the Congress can make laws.. the President is allowed to VETO & to PARDON.... PERIOD.

These clowns have tried to convince everyone of a "Unitary Executive" based on "Inherent Powers" NOT enumerated in the Constitution & they've LITERALLY gotten away with m.u.r.d.e.r for the past 8 years doing it.

The reason that Roberts & Alito were put on the court was because of their involvement in the Federalist Society, which advocates this INCREDIBLY Unconstitutional theory... & it was the reason Harriet Meirs was nominated... & the reason that Mukasey was made Attorney General.

Thank GOD that we have a Constitutional scholar as President-Elect to turn this CRAP around.

Bush can sign anything he wants now.... it will be MOOT come January 20th.

Actually, if you go deeper into the article, Bush CAN do what they mention, and the SCOTUS has made it harder to overturn than other methods of changing regulations.

Exec Orders & signing statements can be overturned with the stroke of a pen... the others will need an act of Congress... which, although a more lengthy process, is very likely to happen next year.

WHY do you think he'll go back on his word?

These aren't laws, they are regulations. Every president does the same thing at the end of their terms.

This is the first we are really hearing about it because, thanks to the Internet, the information is getting out to the average citizen faster and to more of them.

Yes... but the regulations have to be approved by the appropriate Congressional Committees & the makeup of the bureaucracies that are comprised by those Committees.

As soon as the next session of Congress convenes... this will be all gone.

It is very hard for me to believe that a man criminally responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people would suddenly take an interest in worker safety; something's just not human about that picture.

Well, the trick will be keeping them out of power long enough to rebuild.

Construction takes longer than demolition, and it's harder.
