India Terrorist

The only captured terrorist in the horrific attacks in Mumbai, India has given the police an account of the massacre. The Daily Mail reports:

The only terrorist captured alive after the Mumbai massacre has given police the first full account of the extraordinary events that led to it - revealing he was ordered to 'kill until the last breath'.

Azam Amir Kasab, 21, from Pakistan, said the attacks were meticulously planned six months ago and were intended to kill 5,000 people.

He revealed that the ten terrorists, who were highly trained in marine assault and crept into the city by boat, had planned to blow up the Taj Mahal Palace hotel after first executing British and American tourists and then taking hostages.

Mercifully, the group, armed with plastic explosives, underestimated the strength of the
105-year-old building's solid foundations.

As it is, their deadly attacks have left close to 200 confirmed dead, with the toll expected to rise significantly once the hotel has been fully searched by security forces.

Yesterday, Kasab chillingly went through details of Wednesday night's killing spree across the city, which ended when he was cornered by police.

The AP has compiled a timeline of the Mumbai terror attacks:

9:21 p.m. Wednesday, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus __ Two young men walk casually through Mumbai's main railway station, a worn Victorian hulk bustling with late commuters heading home, scurrying past small food stands and juice bars and vendors selling newspapers. They enter near the taxi stand, where long lines of battered black and yellow cabs wait for fares. One wears khaki cargo pants and a blue T-shirt. A pair of small knapsacks are slung over a shoulder. He looks like a college kid.

They are, says a photographer who follows them on part of their grim journey, "backpackers with assault rifles."

Story continues below
advertisement

The two -- and other death squads working in pairs -- are to wreak carnage in landmark after landmark across Mumbai over the next three days, creating panic in this normally unflappable city and killing more than 195 people...

...About 9:30 p.m.

Nariman House, Mumbai headquarters of the ultra-Orthodox Chabad Lubavitch movement.

A gunshot startles the family of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and others inside the recently renovated five-story Jewish center on a bumpy, unpaved back road off a main street in Mumbai's trendy Colaba neighborhood. The pale yellow building, with its synagogue, kosher dining room and friendly rabbi, was a magnet for Israeli backpackers looking for a place to celebrate holidays while on vacation and an important religious center for Mumbai's small Jewish community.

Someone must be lighting firecrackers, thought Sandra Samuel, a maid at the center.

Then a gunman came up the stairs.

She and another employee duck into a room and hid in terror as explosions and gunshots rattle the building through the night.

"They destroyed everything, the lift, the dining room, everything," she says later.

At about the same time

Leopold Cafe and Bar

The place known as Leo's is one of the city's famous tourist restaurants, a joint crammed with glass-topped tables, old travel posters and lounging backpackers drinking cheap beer.

There are maybe 100 people inside when two gunmen appear in the entrances. One lobs in a grenade. Then they open fire.

"It was total chaos ... People didn't know what was going on. Some hit the floor, some ran out of the side entrance or tried to find a place to hide," says Farzad Jehani, who owns the restaurant with his brother.

The assault lasts, perhaps, two minutes. When it's over, at least four foreigners and three Indians are dead, though the brothers aren't sure because patrons quickly rush the casualties to hospitals in passing cars and taxis.

By then the gunmen have left, jogging through the streets and apparently moving on to one of India's most famous hotels just a few blocks away.

"They weren't aiming at anyone in particular. It was like they wanted to empty their magazines and do as much damage here as possible before heading to the Taj," Jehani says.

this might be overly simplistic, but i'm going to throw it up anyway.

my theory is, if a couple of countries have been having disputes about a region (and with each other, even before they were countries) for far longer than America has even been in existence, is it fair to say that the situation might be a bit more complicated (the Kashmiri one) than it seems?

I would suggest that an over 500 -year-old ongoing issue might be a bit more layered, and warrant a bit more study, than dismissing it in favor of some sort of ven.detta against the US...

but that's just my own theory...

Yeah, that's why they targeted Americans and Brits. Time to change your theory

like i said, could be overly simplistic...

but how come those (Ameri.cans and Br.its) weren't the bulk of the casu.alties?

And BTW there were also Cana.dians, Austra.lians, Fre.nch, Germ.an, Isra.eli.s, an Itali.an, a japanese, a jorda.nian, a singa.porean, and a span.iard. Does that change YOUR the.ory?

And what the.ory would you suggest? that this was an att,ac.k on American interests?

Why not start with the most logical (IMO) explanation and go from there? At least there's historical precedent.

Perhaps the terrorists are multi-tasking. Clearly the roots of this conflict is very old. Where the U.S. and the Brits come in is we are strongly allied with India and it's burgeoning economy.

There were only 5-6 Americans killed, out of 200 or so. Does that sound like an attack on Americans?

"Azam Amir Kasab, 21, from Pak.istan, said the att.ac.ks were meticulously planned six months ago and were intended to ki.ll 5,000 people." (from the article)

Are there 5,000 Americans and Brits in Mum.bai? Serious question, because i have no idea.

Pakistan and Afghanistan have been dueling over the Northwest Territories for a long time too. (Which happens to be the area that is home to the most radical intigators of this world crisis.)

America is just the most recent player to wade in....Russia spent years dealing with this area's militants. It dragged Russia down, and we were happily helping the process back then.

The fact that Britons and Americans were deliberately targeted for the first time throws a bit of uncertainty into the usual analysis of Indian terrorism though.

If you didn't vote for the Neo-Cons and the Attack first ask questions later crowd, then you are not quite responsible. If you are against military bases on other's lands, or if you know the oil on their sand is not yours, than you are not to blame either. If you are against corporate greed at the expense of others, you are not to be blamed.

Would you mind confessing your complicity? It seems a little self-centered to think you, personally, had anything to do with the event.

But people always thank God when they just escape a disaster,, and they were not hurt inside a massacre: they forget they neighbor was.. And where was God for him?

The question is were they got the training. This will come out after the interrogations, I hope. Then look for vigorous response. I doubt anything happens in that area with P-stani Intelligence Services knowledge.
If they weren't directly involved, let see if they share Intel with Indians.

You don't know that all this destruction was created by 10 men. All we "know" is what the politicians and cops are saying, and it's easy to tell when they're lying. If their lips are moving they are probably lying. If they say one thing, you'll usually be closer to the truth if you believe something else.

that's not hard to believe. the question is who trained them. 19 men committed 9/11.

armed men in a busy public space, with no remorse, can kill countless people. sad but true. Columbine, McDonald's in San Ysidro, post offices, workplaces around the country, the examples are endless.

armed men with a plan, recon, and training can do incredible damage. ter ror ism is an asymmetric battle; armed men and/or women, sometimes sui cide bombers, attacking an unarmed populace.

I blame the Bush Administration his so called war on terrorism has left EVERYONE UNSAFE. He is INCOMPETENT and the only way he knows how to fight terrorism is to trample on Civil liberties, CORRUPTION as in paying Pakistan money for NOTHING and TORTURE. His administration is a DISGRACE there is NOT one thing that you can point to that Bush accomplish in his 8 years except Mayem and WORSENING of everything good.

January 20th hurry up and get here. I dont even want Bush to say a thing until when he says GOODBYE. He was suppose to give a Press Conference about what happened in India and it looks like someone may have talked him OUT OF IT. Good he should NOT be allowed to speak until he says GOODBYE

India has suffered "terrorist" attacks prior to this - including the assassination of Indira Ghandi by a religious group in her country for pay back for what they saw as her terrorism on them. Her son, Rajiv Ghandi was blown up during a re-election bid as well. This recent attack was a little different in that the intended targets were British and American - not Indian.

All Obama has wanted to do is pull out of the region, and it's not possible, it never was feasible. Afghanastan is facing a real Taliban/Al Quaida threat and so is Pakistan, which has nukes. I believe he doesn't have a clue what to do, and will be totally reliant on his advisors and Hillary.

Since when did he say that? He's always made it his emphasis during his campaign that he would refocus the efforts in Afghanistan, which Bush dropped the ball on quite spectacularly! If anything I think he's probably got a better clue then most other politicians. Look at how he brought up the Kashmir conflict as one of the many issues concerning the region and now we see the results of it brought about here!
