India Terrorist

The only captured terrorist in the horrific attacks in Mumbai, India has given the police an account of the massacre. The Daily Mail reports:

The only terrorist captured alive after the Mumbai massacre has given police the first full account of the extraordinary events that led to it - revealing he was ordered to 'kill until the last breath'.

Azam Amir Kasab, 21, from Pakistan, said the attacks were meticulously planned six months ago and were intended to kill 5,000 people.

He revealed that the ten terrorists, who were highly trained in marine assault and crept into the city by boat, had planned to blow up the Taj Mahal Palace hotel after first executing British and American tourists and then taking hostages.

Mercifully, the group, armed with plastic explosives, underestimated the strength of the
105-year-old building's solid foundations.

As it is, their deadly attacks have left close to 200 confirmed dead, with the toll expected to rise significantly once the hotel has been fully searched by security forces.

Yesterday, Kasab chillingly went through details of Wednesday night's killing spree across the city, which ended when he was cornered by police.

The AP has compiled a timeline of the Mumbai terror attacks:

9:21 p.m. Wednesday, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus __ Two young men walk casually through Mumbai's main railway station, a worn Victorian hulk bustling with late commuters heading home, scurrying past small food stands and juice bars and vendors selling newspapers. They enter near the taxi stand, where long lines of battered black and yellow cabs wait for fares. One wears khaki cargo pants and a blue T-shirt. A pair of small knapsacks are slung over a shoulder. He looks like a college kid.

They are, says a photographer who follows them on part of their grim journey, "backpackers with assault rifles."

Story continues below
advertisement

The two -- and other death squads working in pairs -- are to wreak carnage in landmark after landmark across Mumbai over the next three days, creating panic in this normally unflappable city and killing more than 195 people...

...About 9:30 p.m.

Nariman House, Mumbai headquarters of the ultra-Orthodox Chabad Lubavitch movement.

A gunshot startles the family of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holtzberg and others inside the recently renovated five-story Jewish center on a bumpy, unpaved back road off a main street in Mumbai's trendy Colaba neighborhood. The pale yellow building, with its synagogue, kosher dining room and friendly rabbi, was a magnet for Israeli backpackers looking for a place to celebrate holidays while on vacation and an important religious center for Mumbai's small Jewish community.

Someone must be lighting firecrackers, thought Sandra Samuel, a maid at the center.

Then a gunman came up the stairs.

She and another employee duck into a room and hid in terror as explosions and gunshots rattle the building through the night.

"They destroyed everything, the lift, the dining room, everything," she says later.

At about the same time

Leopold Cafe and Bar

The place known as Leo's is one of the city's famous tourist restaurants, a joint crammed with glass-topped tables, old travel posters and lounging backpackers drinking cheap beer.

There are maybe 100 people inside when two gunmen appear in the entrances. One lobs in a grenade. Then they open fire.

"It was total chaos ... People didn't know what was going on. Some hit the floor, some ran out of the side entrance or tried to find a place to hide," says Farzad Jehani, who owns the restaurant with his brother.

The assault lasts, perhaps, two minutes. When it's over, at least four foreigners and three Indians are dead, though the brothers aren't sure because patrons quickly rush the casualties to hospitals in passing cars and taxis.

By then the gunmen have left, jogging through the streets and apparently moving on to one of India's most famous hotels just a few blocks away.

"They weren't aiming at anyone in particular. It was like they wanted to empty their magazines and do as much damage here as possible before heading to the Taj," Jehani says.

What disturbs me is that India people and Pakistanis are basically the same people who probably have many relatives between the two countries. Both countries are struggling to feed their people and they can find nothing to do but fight each other.

Sounds like the Israelis and the Palestinians - Jacob and Esau

Sounds like Republicans and Democrats

Sounds like whites vs blacks

Sounds like you have nothing much to say in a typical American way you can see all the wrong in other countries, but can scarce see the same thing in your own house.

How are they the same people? One is the democracy and another Islamic terrorist failed state. Also, their fundamental religious beliefs are completely opposite of each other.

The reason for the separation was irreconcilable differences. 'Same people' is one thing they are not.

Obama has always understood that Pakistan is the heart of the conflict on terrrorism. I suspect his administration will be relentless in targeting militants in the frontier region. Despite the protests of Pakistan's government, it is clear that the militants pose a threat to Pakistan's very existence and must be defeated.

The militants planned this attack in India to get Pakistan and India fighting; troops deployed away from the Afghan border to the border with India are no longer available to target Al Qaeda.

There is no defeating them. They must be killed or somehow made to understand that what they are trying to achieve is wrong headed. Killing them may be easier.

Do you honestly believe his tale about being associated with Kashmiri militants? I don't. Why? What has the US and Briton to do with Kashmir? The problem in Kashmir is between India and Pakistan; it doesn't involve the US or Britain. And then there's the attack on the Jewish settlement. Israel and Jews have even less to do with Kashmir than US and Great Britain. We don't know what happened or why but swallowing this man's story is simplistic. Had these men raided Mumbai and targeted Indians I could easily believe the Kashmir militant story but what this captive says doesn't make any sense. Hopeful the facts about this incident will become clear.

From Wikipedia:

The two countries have fought several declared wars over the territory. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947 established the rough boundaries of today, with Pakistan holding roughly one-third of Kashmir, and India one-half, with a dividing line of control established by the United Nations. The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 resulted in a stalemate and a UN-negotiated ceasefire.
Many human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and the Human Rights Watch (HRW) have condemned human rights abuses in Kashmir such as "extra-judicial executions", "disappearances", and torture;[15] the "Armed Forces Special Powers Act", which "provides impunity for human rights abuses and fuels cycles of violence. The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) grants the military wide powers of arrest, the right to shoot to kill, and to occupy or destroy property in counterinsurgency operations. Indian officials claim that troops need such powers because the army is only deployed when national security is at serious risk from armed combatants. Such circumstances, they say, call for extraordinary measures." Human rights organizations have also asked Indian government to repeal[16] the Public Safety Act, since "a detainee may be held in administrative detention for a maximum of two years without a court order."[17]
India alleges that Pakistan has been engaged in a proxy war by supporting mujahadeen who have crossed the LOC to fight the Indian security forces. Pakistan denies the charge and maintains it morally supports Kashmiris.

As long as they don't attack us, It's not our problem. Honestly, the deeper we get involved with what happens overseas the more money it costs. It's like a big distraction. We have to protect OUR borders. Let them control and police their own states.

That is exactly the kind of myopia that made 9/11 happen. The US refused to join in the anti-terror efforts of India and other nations for twenty years, because they were never gonna attack us here.

Not our problem? Britain and France thought the same thing when Hitler was overunning Czheckoslovakia and Austria. Terriorism is everubody's problem. You think these terrorists are going to be satisfied to limit murder to one country and leave everyone else alone? Besides, it's not countries these terrorists are concerned and fearful of for that matter. They fear the exchange of ideas and open talk and respecting other people's differences. They fear democracy and can only survive when they're allowed to tell others how to live and get away with it.

That is the attitude that makes people terrorists in the first place. The U.S. has killed hundreds of thousands of civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan and it has only increased the number of terrorists. Here is an idea, stay out of the region.

Once again, an attack was planned for a number of months either by a group (Al Quaeda) residing in Pakistan or someone who happens to be from Pakistan. (And also once again) the Pakistan government denies responsibility or their (enabling) role in the attacks. Am I the only one who sees a pattern here?

You know. That kind of stuff is what is going to destroy the human race.

I have no love for the terrorists. At times, I think that revenge would be nice. Then I remember. If we do that, it will never end. You cannot create martyrs. We cannot be like them.

International law, the Geneva convention, civilized trials and human decency, along with targeted killing of those in dangerous terrorist cells.

That's what you do.

If you had listened to Deepak on CNN then you would know that these extremists view all attacks against America's allies as a direct attack against GWB and his unilateral terrorism on a Muslim nation....

I am in the miitary and consider myself an extreme patriot but.... those of you who think that the United States has some sanction from GOD to deliver her brand of democracy on the rest of the world are delusional at best and insane at the worst......

Mumbai is the heart of capitalism in India just as NYC is our heart of capitalism... this was the 2008 version of our own 911.... it was just not as dramatic because it seems to me that if all they could muster was 10 guys with guns and an edict to "kill till your last breath" then they have really become discombobulated.....

Unity and clear headed resistance against this type of terrorism will be the best approach.... a commitment to rooting out poverty in the world and establishiing education in these poor countries... conversing with the militants who are not so far gone as to not see what will serve their best interests will be a big step.....

Until we realize that we have had a hand in our own demise we will never progress.... Kind of like a 12 step program for the USA and the horrid foreign policy we have adhered to for the past 30 years.....
