MUMBAI, India — It took just 10 young men armed with rifles and grenades to terrorize this city of 18 million and turn its postcard-perfect icons into battlefields until security forces ended one of the deadliest attacks in India's history.

A previously unknown Muslim group called Deccan Mujahideen _ a name suggesting origins inside India _ has claimed responsibility for the attacks that killed more than 190 people. But Indian officials said the sole surviving gunman, now in custody, was from Pakistan and voiced suspicions of their neighbor.

Pakistan denied it was involved and demanded evidence.

The massacre has raised fears among U.S. officials about a possible surge in violence between Pakistan and India _ the nuclear-armed rivals have fought three wars against each other, two over the disputed region of Kashmir.

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called a rare meeting of leaders from the country's main political parties to discuss the situation Sunday.

Orange flames and dark smoke engulfed the luxury Taj Mahal hotel after dawn Saturday as Indian forces killed the last three militants in blaze of grenades and gunfire. Hours after the firefight, parts of the landmark hotel were in shambles, its corner facade charred black and a red carpet leading to double doors littered with broken glass.

After the final siege, adoring crowds surrounded six buses carrying weary, unshaven commandos dressed in black fatigues, shaking their hands and giving them flowers. One of the commandos said he had been awake for nearly 60 hours since the assault began Wednesday. Another sat sipping a bottle of water and holding a pink rose.

"What happened is disgusting," said Suresh Thakkar, 59, who reopened his clothing store behind the hotel Saturday for the first time since the attacks. "It will be harder to recover, but we will recover. Bombay people have a lot of spirit and courage."

The bloody rampage carried out by suspected Muslim militants at 10 sites across Mumbai, the nation's financial capital formerly known as Bombay, killed at least 195 people and wounded 295. Among the dead were 18 foreigners, including six Americans. Nine attackers were killed.

"Suddenly no one feels safe or secure," said Joe Sequeira, the manager of a popular restaurant near the Oberoi hotel, another site targeted in the attacks. "It will take time. People are scared but they will realize it's no use being scared and sitting at home."

While authorities scoured the massive 565-room Taj Mahal for any remaining captives and defused booby traps, Indians began mourning and cremating their dead. At least 20 killed in the fighting were members of security forces.

Each new detail about the attackers raised more questions. Who trained the militants, who were so well prepared they carried bags of almonds to keep their energy up? What role, if any, did archrival Pakistan play in the attack? And how did so few assailants, who looked like college students, wreak so much damage?

As officials pointed the finger at neighboring Pakistan, some Indians looked inward and expressed anger at their own government.

"People are worried, but the key difference is anger," said Rajesh Jain, chief executive officer at a brokerage firm, Pranav Securities. "People are worked up about the ineffectiveness of the administration. Does the government have the will, the ability to tackle the dangers we face?"

The gunmen were as brazen as they were well trained, using sophisticated weapons as well as GPS technology and mobile and satellite phones to communicate, officials said. The group made repeated contact with an unidentified foreign country.

The investigation suggested the attackers planned to massacre 5,000 people, said R.R. Patil, deputy to the chief of Maharashtra state, without giving further details.

"Whenever they were under a little bit of pressure they would hurl a grenade. They freely used grenades," said J.K. Dutt, director general of India's elite commando unit.

Suspicions in Indian media quickly settled on the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, long seen as a creation of the Pakistani intelligence service to help wage its clandestine war against India in disputed Kashmir.

A U.S. counterterrorism official said some "signatures of the attack" were consistent with Lashkar and Jaish-e-Mohammed, another group that has operated in Kashmir. Both are reported to be linked to al-Qaida.

President George W. Bush pledged full U.S. support for the investigation, saying the killers "will not have the final word." FBI agents were sent to India to help with the probe.

"As the people of the world's largest democracy recover from these attacks, they can count on the people of world's oldest democracy to stand by their side," Bush added in a brief address from the White House.

The Indian navy said it was investigating whether a trawler found drifting off the coast of Mumbai, with a bound corpse on board, was used in the attack.

In addition to six Americans, the dead also included Germans, Canadians, Israelis and nationals from Britain, Italy, Japan, China, Thailand, Australia and Singapore.

It was the country's deadliest attack since 1993 serial bombings in Mumbai killed 257 people. But officials said the toll from the three days of carnage was likely to rise as more bodies were brought out of the hotels.

Dr. Deepak Chopra began to make a suggestion on Larry King Live last night regarding how we should finally begin an objective effort to trace the funding of some of these terrorist groups. He mentioned, in particular, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Unfortunately, as is so often the case on LKL, he was cut off to go to commercial. It would have been interesting to have let him elaborate more fully. Not that Dr. Chopra has all the answers, but his idea is sound. We will never get to the bottom of how these groups obtain their funding until such time as the government of the US and other Western nations stop protecting their sacred cow nations. Of course there are other deep seated reasons for the existence of terrorist groups that must be addressed, but we can't keep wringing our hands over how this is all happening while at the same time burying our heads in the sand about their funding because we dont want to embarrass some so-called friends. Larry King said he would allow Dr. Chopra to elaborate more fully sometime in the future. I hope he does.

Now is the perfect opportunity for Obama to put his hawkish and decidedly centrist cabinet selections and promises behind him, and thoughtfully engage the Muslim global community. Negotiations must begin.

I truly believe that everytime an attack such as this occurs there is an opportunity to unite the world to fight it.....w was not the man to do this but President Obama is......I see this as an opportunity which must not be lost....step up while the whole world is understanding that this can not be tolerated!

Easier than said than done, though I agree. If 9*1*1 didn't unite the world against ter.ror, and all the big atro.cities since then, including some in India bigger than this one, it's doubtful that this one will.

The real problem with places like Europe not doing their part to go after these kinds of people, is that they fear that if they do, they will get one like this on home soil. Of course, if they did a big one on home soil, they'd expect all the cooperation from America that they themselves have denied America. That's just the way they are.

How can you speak for all the people in the world? Any person of a rational mind is against terrer, and acts of vio.lence..... You don't need things like the September incident or what just happened in India to have a group of people to agree that terrer is a bad thing....

You can fight terror with police forces but not an army. You took one hit on 9/11 and as retalation set a whole region on fire. How stupid. Europeans will help when measures are appropriate but not follow blindly. Obama can count on our co-operation but we will not participate in adventures. He can go into Afghanistan big time, good luck. We don't buy this war on terror oxymoron. We have had enough terror in Europe in various countries in the last 50 years. You live with it, but you don't invade other countries. Maybe the USA need to learn the hard way.

9/11 did unite the world against terrorists. But Bush twisted that support into naked theft of Iraqi oil fields, which lost US world wide support and inflamed the Jihaddists.

Our global policies have alienated reasonable Muslims so much. I hope that it changes. You are right we need "regular" Muslims on board fighting this.

There was, is and always will be terrorism in this world. War on terror is an oxymoron. You took ONE hit on 9/11 and have set a whole region on fire. Let Obama take care of the economy and let America mind their own business. You have piled up so much hate against America in the last few years, it will take a while to clear.

Why would you rule them out? I guess the memory is a little cloudy and the only difference between this and 9 11 is the number of people.

The U.S. will go to war with Pakistan now. The oil and gas pipelines originating in the Caspian Basin and running through Afghanistan, thanks to our invasion and occupation in 2001, must now continue on to the sea ports. Iran is also another likely sight for future invasions.

If you want to know why this kind of stuff happens, never ask governments. They always give you some song and dance about "spreading democracy and freedom while fighting terrorism." Simply read the manifestos written by those who actually fund these missions. Read the manifesto of the PNAC, for example.

I don't think so. If anything, India-West relations will be strengthened. Whatever that means. We don't have the resources to in.vade Pakistan.

Well, Obama did seem to suggest during a debate that we should go after radical Islamists in Pakistan even if we don't have permission.

As I have said before, the organized attacks were too big for some as yet unknown group,
but often, speculation leads to contempt and I think that we should wait before we jump the
gun, or continue to blame Pakistan as a country, it is never the fault of the whole country.

"it is never the fault of the whole country"

Of course not. We live in Europe with different terror groups for ages. Police forces can be used to fight terror but NEVER an army. In November right after 9/11 the USA bombed Afghanistan like a rabid dog and caused an estimated death toll of 4.000 to 6.000 among the Afghan civilians. This is long forgotten in the west, but I think these actions fuel the terror and recruite young men in the region against the west. The Iraq war has sparked such a hate against Americans which will take generations to heal.

Instead of a few nutjobs, there are 50-60 terrorists involved. Instead of a few bombs going off, this mass group of terrorists launch a coordinated raid on 10 tourist spots, targetting Americans, British, and Israelis. While some explosions were heard and we can assume those were bombs, these terrorists were also armed with automatic guns and grenades, acting less like the “terrorist cell” concept we all know and more like a well trained militia. We’ve never seen Islamist groups stage an attack like this before.

Andhra Pradesh state along the Bay of Bengal coast has endured a number of attacks linked to a group known as Naxalites. Named for the town of Naxalbari where their movement began in 1967, Naxalites are revolutionary communists. Though not all are militant, Human Rights Watch estimates some 10,000 are members of armed militias, which continue to wage a low-intensity insurgency that claims hundreds of Indian lives every year.
Militants act as soldiers, using guns and grenades, and taking hostages. This has not been the M.O. of recent Islamist terrorists. But, like I said before, the targeting of Americans and Israelis is a fingerprint of Islamic terror… So what to think of the perpetrators of these Mumbai attacks?

And I’m certainly not buying the notion that the “Deccan Mujahadein”, a unknown group until now, played a major role. The Mumbai terrorist attacks were carried out by an established, experienced group.
