Plaxico Burress

Fox Sports News' Jay Glazer reports:

The New York Giants wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the right thigh on Friday night, FOXSports.com has learned, not long after being ruled out of Sunday's game against the Redskins with a hamstring injury

He spent the night in the hospital and the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The team is still trying to gather further information on the incident. Several media reports Saturday indicated the shooting took place in a nightclub.

"Our primary concern is for Plaxico's health and well-being, and given the circumstances, we are relieved to say he was released from a New York City hospital," the team said in a statement.

ESPN has more details on the shooting.

New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has told the team that he accidentally shot himself Friday night, a league official told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.

Emergency medical responders were called to the Latin Quarter nightclub on Manhattan's East Side, where the accident happened, and police were on the scene Friday night, a league official said.

Burress was taken by ambulance to the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, where he stayed overnight. He was released from the hospital Saturday afternoon.

A league official told Paolantonio the bullet went through the skin and muscle tissue of Burress' right thigh, and did not hit any major arteries, and there were no broken bones.

I think about a couple of things, 1st, the NRA point of view, 2nd, the urban culture that it's macho to carry heat, sources if big trouble in our cities (the closest to me, Albany, NY, has bad gun fight issues, mostly kids).

On the one hand, the NRA view that you should not be restricted from owning a firearm, on the other, that a firearm is too dangerous to possess if you have no training in how to use it (in Plax's case, even being sensible enough to keep the safety on).

I was reminded of a part of Shadows Of Motown, about the musicians behind the great Motown hits; in '68,with the Detroit riots, these guys sought to protect their white guitar players, and to the white players surprise, they all produced weapons to get their colleagues safely out of danger.

So, I'm not anti-gun, but we would all be safer if you get training and certification to carry one. Is that such a bad thing?

Mr. Burress probably doesn't know how to carry a gun, espescially if it goes off because it slipped down his pant leg. Secondly, it takes more than having a gun to be protected. There have been people who have been found dead with their guns at their side. Last, it is situations like this that should remind us that money is merely a tool, and has no real worth, if the possessor of it has no worthy purpose!

they must drop out of the Bloods or Crips...! No more gang bangin homey!

He is actually lucky the his concealed weapon injured only him. It could have killed someone standing close to him in the club.

Why did he feel the need to carry a gun in the first place? If he felt threatened, why not hire a body guard for the night? With $35 Million he could afford it.

And then we have the legal questions:
Does Burress have a carry permit for NYC?
Does he have one for New Jersey?
Did he legally transport a handgun over state lines?
Isn't discharging a firearm in a public place a crime?

And then how does this all fit in with the NFL personal conduct policy?

Mr Burress may wind up suffering significant legal, financial, and career consequences.

Plax will have more time to enjoy the thug life now. I'm loathe to wish for another's misfortune, but I really hope this punk never dons another NFL uniform. The Steelers saw this coming when they let this amazing talent walk because of his attitude. Too bad the Rooneys can't run the whole league.

I agree. These guys are paid FAR too much, do stupid things, and get away with it. This idiot has no one to blame but himself; now there's nowhere to turn except to be held responsible for his own misfortune. May he stay off the playing field, and be forced to live a normal life.
Get rid of the gun, fool.

Judge:: "Mr. Burress, how did you come to illegally possess a handgun in the Latin Quarter nightclub?"

Plaxico may face criminal charges as to his possession of a conceled handgun which is illegal by NY City law without a NYC permit (he has a Florida permit, not valid in NY City). I hope he does face charges, as much as it may hurt him or the Giants, as no matter how much money you make or celeberty you have, you too can face jail for a major crime. It would also make an example to other professional athletes and celeberties to not break the laws on handguns.

isn't that what David Crosby did time for?

Having a concealed weapon in a bar?

In Texas of all places, if I remember right?

Even Texas has laws against guns in bars.

Technically, he would need to remove himself from the gene pool, and the ability to pass said genes down, to qualify for the Darwin. His aim was a bit wide to accomplish that. Maybe next time.

well if we're being technical... i believe this would qualify for an Honorable Mention....

but given the standard some of the other honorable mentions have set... maybe not...
