Nassau County Police examine the front of the Wal-Mart in Valley Stream, N.Y., Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, after a temporary Wal-Mart worker died after a throng of eager shoppers broke down the doors and trampled him moments after the Long Island store opened early Friday for day-after-Thanksgiving bargain hunting, police said. NEW YORK — Police are reviewing surveillance videos of a post-Thanksgiving shopper stampede that trampled a suburban Wal-Mart worker to death, but they acknowledge it may be difficult to bring criminal charges.

Nassau County police and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said no new information was available Saturday on the employee's brutal death, which rattled shoppers even as they flocked to the Valley Stream store a day later.

"It felt a little freakish," customer Ellie Berhun, 48, told the Daily News. "Some man lost his life because a VCR was on sale? Please. It's just too sad for words."

Police said the temporary worker, Jdimytai Damour, was mowed down as about 2,000 bargain-hunters surged into the store at Friday's 5 a.m. opening, leaving a metal portion of the door frame crumpled like an accordion.

Other workers were knocked to the ground as they tried to rescue Damour, and customers simply stepped over him and kept shopping even as the store announced it was closing because of the death, police and witnesses said.

At least four other people, including a woman eight months pregnant, were taken to hospitals for observation or treatment for minor injuries. The store, about 20 miles east of Manhattan, closed for several hours but reopened Friday afternoon.

The day after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday because it has traditionally marked the point when a throng of shoppers pushes stores into profitability for the year.

Bentonville, Ark.-based Wal-Mart said it added staffers and outside security workers and put up barricades to try to prepare for the crush. But police spokesman Detective Lt. Michael Fleming said Friday that security was inadequate for a scene he called "utter chaos."

Criminal charges are possible, but identifying anyone in the store's videos may prove difficult, Fleming said.

Damour, 34, came from a temporary agency and was doing maintenance work at the store, Wal-Mart said.

A woman reported being trampled by overeager customers at a Wal-Mart opening Friday in Farmingdale, about 15 miles east of Valley Stream, Suffolk County police said. She suffered minor injuries but finished shopping before filling the report, police said.

Items on sale at the Valley Stream Wal-Mart included a Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV for $798, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28, a Samsung 10.2 megapixel digital camera for $69 and DVDs such as "The Incredible Hulk" for $9.

Yo! Like dese are New Yawkers. So here's my prediction for next year: 173,536 Lawng Islanders and their attorneys will be camped in front of the same store praying to be trampled so they can sue.

Can't say New Yawkers don't learn their lessons! Remember the New York alphabet: Freakin' A, Freakin' B, Freakin' C . . .

These stupid tramplings happen EVERY year. I blame the stores for staging these promotions and not having an entry plan in place to deal with the crowds that most assuredly will show up. It's amazing that they have not learned form previous years. I feel horribly for this person, and for the employees in general.

Who needed to buy items so badly that they didn't notice that they were walking on someone? I've never shopped at Walmart because I feel that they come into small towns and do away with hometown businesses. They have biggoted and sexist hiring practices and I don't want my money supporting these types of business practices.

Another good reason to shop online!

New Rule: The store manager has to unlock the door! That way you can be sure there will be enough security.

Exactly right sailor. Employees inside the store must have sensed the unruly mob outside and feared for their safety. So what do we do?......................Let the "temp" unlock the door, he's expendable.

Dispicable.

I'm glad that I don't live in an area where Walmart is the only retailer in town. They are one of the greediest employers in the world and consistently mistreat employees. Some Walmarts have locked overnight employees inside stores and warehouses. They will probably do everything in their power to deny compensation to the victim's family. The Waltons are despicable.

and

The shoppers who caused the stampede are beneath contempt. This had little to do with black friday and everything to do with people who don't think that societal rules and norms apply to them. Not everyone in the crowd is guilty or culpable. Just the inhuman cretins among them. I still can't believe that people had their children out there, w.t.f.were they thinking?

They were thinking that in previous years, and at OTHER Wal-Mart stores tramplings have never happened.

Your extremism is boring. I'm sorry you're not getting the outraged reaction that you so obviously crave from your repeated posts that are full of venom and devoid of logic and reason.

To be fair, the momentum of the crowd may have prevented some people from stopping short of the employee, giving him time to get out of the way. That said, I see Walmart as being hugely culpable in this tragedy. Effective crowd control, including cattle pens ( a la Disneyland) and outdoor security, could have prevented the trampling.

I agree with the statment about people bringing their children with them. What is wrong with people? How can someone put a bargain before the safety of their children? I can't stand crowds and loathe taking my children into a crowded situation...and I have really good young kids. There are too many ways for a kid to become separated from the parents, injured or abducted in the chaos. To bring children to Black Friday at Walmart is beyond irresponsible.

Also, I agree wholeheartedly with your first paragraph. I think of Walmart when see the cover of my kids' Hardy Boys book, The Mystery of the Chinese Junk. I haven't read the book, but I can guess where the Chinese Junk ends up.

I agree about the momentum of the crowd. Stampedes are never caused by the people at the front of the crowd, and it is impossible for the people in the front to stop the crush once it's started.

This is a real tragedy. Our society has lost sight of the meaning of Christmas.

I saw the lines at a local walmart yesterday and left.

I returned today and purchased the Bissell vaccuum for $28, the $29 HP Printer, the Incrdible Hulk for $9 and other things. These and many other deals were still availible, and hardy worth killing people over.

Next year, sleep in Friday . Get up Saturday at 7:30, have breakfast, and shop leisurely at 9:00. The deals will be there, and the lines will be short. Most importantly, you will be safer.

Nice. Merry Freakin' Chrismas, WalMart shoppers. I'd like to think they were tormented by the thought that they killed someone, but I'm pretty sure they were just sad they missed their Blue Dot specials.

Monsters.

Safety? Pamplona stages their “running of the bulls” with more organization than most big-box retailers. Sadly, this event seems to be the product of a scavenger economy, where economic hardship has lowered people their base instincts… all to save a few coins in their pockets.

Just another day in the Life of Greed Mart...

I've seen the increase of Ads... Greed Mart is not advertising to stay in business... IMO, they're advertising to put K-Mart, Target, Penney's, Sears etc, Out of Business... They're opening more Checkout Lanes, for stoking their Greed, not because they have ever cared about the Customer... Greed Mart will meet, or beat anyone's advertised prices... Whatever it takes to put their Competition Out of Business...

Last I saw the Walton Family was worth 90+ Billion $$$$$... Greed (a FEAR of NOT having enough) is insatiable... It's not even about the Money anymore... They couldn't spend what they have... IT's about caving in to Fear...

I've never set foot in a Wal (Greed) Mart and never will... Even disabled, I will NOT disable my Love for the USA, for saving a few dollars... Greed Mart is the Ugly in Ugly Americans...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:06 PM on 11/29/2008

No. It's a place where ordinary Americans can find basic things that they can afford. Tearing down doors and trampling people is about greed, but Wal Mart is an asset to the communities it serves.

That's what they'd like you to think anyway. The only reason they're needed is because they force people to need them (i.e. putting the smaller businesses out on the street) and thus making so there is no other game in town. WalMart is not an asset. I define and asset as something that is POSITIVE. They are not positive. They have a documented history of denying benefits etc (see other posts for the details).

Don't tell me they're an asset.

Unfortunately too many Americans only have Walmarts in their area. Yesterday I read a post by someone who stated that they would have to drive 75 miles from their home to shop at another retailer.

Walmart engages in reprehensible practices, and since they pay such low wages many of their employees receive government assistance from WIC, food stamp, and Section 8 programs.

The Waltons are billionaires, and we taxpayers have to subsidize their employees incomes. Corporatism at its worst.

I read a book by a lady who went around the country and did different jobs (one was at WalMart) and it was very eye-opening. I can't remember what the book's name is though. Darnit!

How totally senseless, tragic and preventable. Everyone from WalMart to the savage shoppers are responsible. This man died so that some thoughtless people could enjoy some trinkets that will last maybe a year or so. They actually trampled a man to death to shop at WalMart. WalMart does this every year, so why were they not prepared? They are the biggest company making the most money and treating their employees like dirt and will profit greatly on Black Friday. Shame on them, shame on all who were there, and especially shame on those that, without regard for other's, trampled people to save a buck. Hope you truly have a wonderful holiday season....if your conscience doesn't get you, karma will.

My thoughts and prayers to that poor man and his family. Their holiday season will never be the same.

I just can';t believe this. Don't these idiots realize there's even larger price cuts later on? Who the hell cares? I stay home on Black Friday, not wanting to be pushed and shoved. And as for people waiting in line for 12 hours or more? Insanity.

Right there with you, Liz. Figuratively speaking, of course, because we both stay home on Black Friday. ;-)

I hate shopping in stores this time of year. I buy online and avoid the crowds.

The day after Thanksgiving used to be called "Black Friday" because it was the day most likely to push retailers into profitability,

From now on, "Black Friday" will be remembered as the day one is most likely to get killed while shopping.

That's just what I was thinking. I had to look it up, because I never understood the name and now I do...in 2 different ways. Seriously...I'd rather get nothing...or maybe a paper airplane than to get anything from that particular Wal-Mart. I can see some spoiled kid crying because he got Guitar Hero instead of Rock Band...and his old man saying."Do you know how many Wal-Mart employees I had to run over to get you this!"
