When President Bush says so long to Washington on Jan. 20, he'll return to a much different Lone Star State from the one he left eight years ago.

Pickup trucks, Big Oil, and barbecue brisket still reign supreme, but this red state that helped deliver the presidency to Mr. Bush twice and his father once, and that catapulted GOP strategist Karl Rove to the national stage, is suddenly spotted with big pockets of blue.

One has to study where the 1st group in republican party divide, it originated from the dixiecrats whom abandoned the democrats in anger, over the civil rights/segregation issues of 1960's era, the republicans up till then had no real power, but took these hatemongers, racists in with open arms, used their hatred, anger to gain elections, seats! Now demographics, is changing they can see it, since they are the educated, intelligent in the republican party the right hate wing radio icons love to denigrate, and put down, as we saw in their great white hopes the McCain/Palin ticket, which foundered and died in its own delusions of granduer! The beauty is hate radio icons truly see themselves as spokespersons for their "party" and the elite in their party as insignificant, unimportant and trivial! But reality is if the writing on the wall is correct as I see it, moderates will go for the "fairness doctrine legislation" nuetering the right wing radio icons monoply on FM/AM radio, silencing them while blaming the left for the "fairness doctrine passage", but beauty is it will further help to destroy the power of the right wing nut jobs, since they cannot win elections without the moderates, and the moderates never cared about the right wing fringe agenda as long as it helped them win seats, power!

Blah, Blah, Blah. Fortune telling is not one of man's best skills. If TExas is to turn Blue it requires work and organization, not just waiting for potential Democrats to move into the State.

Granted Demographic shifts do change the balance of power form time to time, as we have seen this year in the West, but no goroup can be taken for granted to show up to the polls for "free". The Hispanic vote went for Bush in 2004. Such thinking that certain groups vote in lock step as a block is just nuts. Each election is unique and the Hispanic population is hardly a completely homogeneous group.

Generally, the Democrats are more in favor of amnesty for illegals. And if you respond, please respond with that in mind.

Latinos were the big difference this election. Obama showed that building a coalition of minorities is possible, now minorities will have a voice in the WH for at least 8 years and the republicans have lost because of not being inclusive and promoting racist policies against immigrants and minorities as a whole.

the republicans mocked CHANGE and it bit them in the ass!!!

Ditto. Austin is one of the few blue bastions in Texas. I can thank a professor at UT I had, Tom Philpot, for birthing my change of philosophy towards progressive thinking.

I'm jealous. Austin is the best city in Texas. No where else even comes close.

Democrat Chris Bell will turn Texas Senate District 17 blue on December 16, 2008. Early voting begins December 8. A donation at chrisbell.com would make a great Christmas gift for your favorite Texas Republican.

The demographics are shifting away from the Republicans all over the map, and the Latino community is certainly an increasingly important part of that change. Not just in Texas, but Florida, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado, as well.

what's wrong with rural folks?! even in Africa, rural populations continue to vote for dictators...

Right wing radio is all that is available in rural areas. Hate radio is also prevalent in third world rural areas as well. Observe that the Rwandan genocide was precipitated by a hate radio personality.

From the movie Blazing Saddles: "You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know... m o r o n s."

it's not just the latino vote; but, also "a new cosmopolitan and high-tech Texas is emerging." this middle class group (mostly white liberals) helped Obama carrry Virginia. So, next is texas

You're insulting people by their race on how they will vote.

Focus on your own life and let the chips fall where they may.

Latino voters will continue to be a force in American politics. In fact, I even expect for Obama to name a Latino to The Supreme Court. Everybody knows its coming. And its long, long overdue.

The problem with that idea. For every legal Latino we have in America, we have 5 illegals. You can always bet that in a home of 20 mexicans, there will be illegals. I say round 'em up...and herd 'em back down to Mexico. Or better yet, put a fence around Texas and let them all live there. Maybe break Texas off from the lower 48 and push it out to sea (wait for Bush to get home first).

If the Democrats pass legislation to open the borders and the Mexican population increases in Texas, then the percent of uneducated moochers will increase and they will likely vote for the party that does a better job looting productive Americans and distributing their wealth. Next their state budget will look like California as more moochers and looters take hold and the productive folk move away. With only moochers and government employees left, both will start to look like Michigan.

Then we can change the names of these two states to Texico and Calexico and sell them back to Mexico.

Works for me.

How do you think we got the US? Possession is nine tenths of the law, mocoso. If you want to live in the United States...get with the program, and teach your countrymen to get their paperwork straightened out. While you are at it, send all of your illegal relatives back to where they came from.

Yep...I see them in my neighbors yard every day with materials and trucks that belong to the construction crew they are working for. My neighbor is a preacher that moved here from Costa Rica. How's that for playing someone's guilt?? Mocoso, if you help me build my church and my home, you will be free of your sins !!
