Daily Mail:

Winona Ryder has been accused of losing £81,000 of diamonds loaned to her for a fashion awards ceremony.

The actress, who was convicted of shoplifting in 2001, was given a diamond encrusted bracelet and ring to wear to a Marie Claire magazine party.

Miss Ryder reported the items missing after she allegedly handed them to staff at her Madrid hotel for safekeeping.

But according to the French magazine Voici, hotel management insist they have no surveillance footage showing her handing over the jewels. Executives at Bulgari, which owns the diamonds, apparently called in the police.

She is a millionare actress convicted of STEALING. What more do we need to know before one comes to the conclusion that she has problems?

She's been convicted of theft in California. I thinks drugs were in play then too.

whether she took it or not...surely she's guilty of not taking the time and effort to get the jewels back to the owner, whether having an assistant or the hotel do it.

What celebrity values any of this stuff ? their egoes are the only thing they take care of

wow..she must really have a problem if she would be so stupid as to steal the jewels, given her past history. maybe it's a celebrity thing where they think they can get away with anything...

Something is missing from her life. Maybe its Johnny Depp. She should get help before she ends up in jail. IF she's guilty.

How disappointing that, almost uniformly, people want to find her guilty of repeating the mistake she made many years ago. It is reprehensible that the reporting on this sets the reader up to come to this very conclusion.

Meanwhile,TMZ reports:

"We know what happened. The morning after the event, around 6:00 AM, Winona checked out of the hotel. No one from Marie Claire was around to collect the stuff, so she left everything in her hotel room.
Our sources confirm the bracelet and ring did indeed turn up missing -- the dress and other stuff weren't taken. We're told Winona never said she had taken the jewels to the front desk, (as reported in a "French magazine" ) and whoever planted the story may be covering up for someone who had access to the room after she left."

It's worth noting that nothing about this event in reported in the Spanish press, and they enjoy celebrity gossip as much as anyone. Perhaps those closest to the investigation have no reason to suspect Ms Ryder. In any case, Bulgari got tons of photos and publicity for their $125,000 "investment". Marie Claire too.

It is sad that she had more than one incident in the past and that makes her seem guilty, even if she's not.

Its called a "Reputation".

I like her. Too bad her career seems to have tanked several years ago. Now, the little we hear about her, is always something negative.

Poor Winona. She is a good actress too, and I liked her. If she did steal the jewels, I hope she goes to get some help.

Well, the thing about having been convicted of shoplifting in the past unfortunately makes it impossible to call such reporting defamation. Of course the mysterious loss is going to be investigated and reported.

How charitable of you to allow that the way the jewels went missing is a mystery. And tell us, exactly, how a past conviction means the individual can be fairly and justly accused, tried and convicted by this anonymous "jury" without proof of guilt, and and not call it slander? Our system of justice presumes innocence, thank goodness. As far as a conspiracy, I merely stated what is true. Bulgari has gotten pictures, with close ups of their "missing jewels" distributed as far and wide as the internet can reach. Isn't that what they wanted when they paid (of course) Ms Ryder to wear the jewels? Marie Claire magazine stands to benefit as well from the publicity, don't they? And why should any of this alienate Hollywood stars? Your assertion is absurd.

Oh yeah, it's all on a conspiracy on the part of Bulgari and Marie Claire to alienate Hollywood stars and make them fear ever having any connection to those companies again.

She handed a $160 thousand dollar bracelet over to a third party without getting a name or receipt.
Sure, I believe that. Your cell awaits madam. (Blames the staff. What a b.i.tch.)

About a million years ago I worked in an very upscale retail boutique. The worst thieves were the rich older ladies who lunch for sport. We regularly had to call their husbands, doctors, and lawyers to come and pick them up. Since the store would have lost business if we prosecuted these doyennes of society we never prosecuted. We did however issue trespass mandates, but they violated those too. Bottom line, women that can afford to shop get "high" from stealing. After they are busted a couple of times they aren't even ashamed.

I worked at an antiques place and yes, the wealthiest women were the cheapest, and not to be trusted as they asked to have their driver or other "people" take home stuff and they'd pay us "later". No deal.

No, it's not a laughing matter, but I had to laugh just the same.

Imagining these grannies pick pocket a gazzilion bucks bracelet with their nice hats, and being held up by the store waiting for their husband or lawyers waiting to be bailed out is hysterical.

Second childhood, I guess.

Had to give a chuckle when I read your post. I worked, many years ago, in one of those 'dazzling' new malls in my hometown. It was a two story department store with one of the first escalators. I was working in retail on the second tier where the locally famous builder and owner of the mall's wife would come regularly and clean housewares out of its spatulas and cooking utensils. On the first floor which consisted of clothing and women's hats, a local doctor's wife would come in dressed to match whichever hat she fancied that day. She boldly left the store with the price tag dangling from her bonnet. Both husbands asked that they be billed for said items. No wives were arrested.

Again Wionna damn girl. I hope she realizes that she will get caught once again. But the jeweler knew her history, it's as almost they wanted to be robbed by her.
